Yuzuru Hanyu: 2018-2019

This is rough translation of Oda's commentary in Yuzuru's FS at Rostelecom Cup.

"I think he did his best. Although he could land quads in 6 minutes warm up, it is difficult to put all elements together while we feel anxious during the program. Because even if we are able to execute each element, our moves are going to be different (than usual). He must have been feeling like "am I doing right?", but he worked very well. The course into the jumps or the timing for breathing, he had to change everything so I think he was feeling insecure, but he succeeded in what he could do now."

"As for the program, it was better in terms of expression and music interpretation compare to the performance in the competition of Finland. (slow motion starts) This is 4S at the start, this is really beautiful. This is truly perfect and will be getting from +3 to +5. Next 4T, this is also wonderful. PERFECT. I have no doubt these two amazing jumps are the big advantages in TES for this performance. He was also energetic in the step sequence like this, he captured the music well while he was skating. This is 3 jump sequence in the latter half, 4T was fully rotated but Euler was a little bit underrotated. Therefore, he will get the deduction on Euler, actually this was not almost Euler because he couldn't jump (Euler) but turned around at where he was. I still think how well he managed to do 3 jump sequence there, it would make huge difference in scores if he had not tried it. This is 3A which is one of his best jumps. Again, he is doing this in different access to the jump than usual, I think it was difficult for him to make the curve (into the jump), especially in the second half of the program. (looking at Ina Bauer and Hydro Blading) These expression were awesome. He did spins at high speed at the end, that reminded us of Plushenko and it was very good spin."

Oda chuckled when he mentioned UR on Euler  Also I rewatched 6 minutes warm up and Shuzo said he sprained his leg (ankle?) when he was competing, he tore three ligaments and underwent surgery. No wonder he cares for Yuzuru every time he is in bad health.

Well... NHK was bad. I remember Orser talking about it in the Olympic feature — that when he first saw Yuzu again, Yuzu was on crutches and in a cast, and Orser told him (paraphrased), “If you want to set world records, lulzno, but if you want to win the Olympics, that’s doable.” (Brian Orser: please adopt all of us. You are the world’s boring-but-invaluable uncle.)

As far as Nationals go, Yuzu doesn’t need to compete (he’s going to Worlds). And I can’t see a situation in which the GPF is a bad idea but Japanese nationals are a-okay — they’re too close on the calendar, plus conditioning loss from time spent off-ice, etc. As much as it hurts, it’s probably best to shelve both (assuming that’s the medical advice) and focus on 4CC and Worlds instead.

I’m just absolutely gutted for Yuzu. I was watching a livestream of practice and saw the fall in real time — I was up late myself and sobbing/screaming in pain because autoimmune — and I kept trying to tell myself he took his time getting up because he was sulking. You know. Because that makes sense. But it’s just... yes, some of this is a natural consequence of training quads for 8+ years, and this is a brutal sport. And yet seeing Yuzu so happy and comfortable with himself this season, it feels like yet another round of some twisted “good news/bad news” joke. Good news: you’re going to be born with a body that’s aerodynamically perfect for figure skating! Bad news: have this asthma.

Hearing him speak English so proficiently was such a dead giveaway in terms of how much more confident and at peace he was this season. (This is also why you speak a foreign language more freely after a few drinks. Not even joking.) I was just so happy for him.

I understand what he means about each unhappiness being the start of a new bit of luck... but it’s also a terrible way to live. (Darkly: I would know. I’ve been using that line as a “joke” since the moment of birth.) At this point, I know better than to hope for good news, but maybe, just maybe, Yuzu can catch a break and the news will be “the least worst of only bad options.” That’s ... luck.

I am so sorry that happened to you, hoping for better things for you and for Yuzu.....

Continuing to cheer for Yuzu today!
I got the urge to paint him again late last night so here it is:

This costume is so amazing for inking and black and white styles.
Took about 3 hours to complete.

This is so beautiful @interspectator

More donations for Miyagi thanks to the effort of Yuzu fans. That is great news and will give hope to all who are still recovering.

Thanks also for the translation @yude

As long as the injury is not that severe I am relieved. Yuzu just keep recovering well.

Hey guys, I think this hasn't been posted;

The Russian Football Executive Director told his players that Talent & Character made Yuzuru Hanyu a legendary athlete, and hopes that they can learn from him the spirit of overcoming challenges

When a figure skater is being used as a role model for a foreign football team, you know he has done something amazing

Reminds me of when Japanese news compared the Olympic's men's TV ratings with the World cup ratings lol only in Japan would figure skating TV ratings be compared to soccer

Thank you, but you should include more information in that tweet as "decide if he'll come back" can lead people to the wrong assumptions. It makes it sound as if he'll retire depending on this diagnosis or something.

Sorry about that everyone, I just assumed the press would come up with a more detailed article or someone would provide more detailed information. I should have been more careful

It's ok, thanks for sharing! We all try to add to the information on the thread. Your contribution is also important. :ghug:

They really do admire him in Russia....

That interview with Johnny got me teary-eyed, then that gif with the color->black and white->color got me teary-eyed again.

Also, I had no idea spinners were so small! I never got one because for some reason, I thought they were much bigger and would be annoying to find a place for. :hslap: Now, where's my wallet...?

Time to show yuzu some more appreciation after GP France SP. Can't imagine where he'd be if he's relatively healthier:sad46:.

I haven't been near the French one (still mourning for our boy....) do I want to know?

Jason Brown was very good, Kevin Aymoz and Romain were solid, and you’re better off skipping everyone else.

Well it proves yuzu really is the only one on the current field who manages to consistly combine artistry and techs during competitions, and he's on another level.
