2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

But tyranny and hard regimen led to injuries, that led to months of ice, that led to inability to do a layback spins....
Poor Yuzuru and Tursynbayeva and baby Cha :( now I'm worried about Evgenia even more....
besides, considering mental condition that Gabby ended up with... I hope Evgenia won't end up with the same problems.

Some people want Medvedeva back to her old team so she can be overscored again? I thought we all were standing for fair scores.
A wildly funny statement considering that Zhenya's PCS marks are ones of the highest amongst her rivals which doesn't reflect a shocking drop in the PCS quality that happend since the Olympics. Fair scores? Orser is the last guy on Earth to go to in a search for them:laugh:

I don't see how they are on the same level.
Bradie beat Evgenia twice this season. But I do feel for Evgenia. A former champion who took steps to get even better actually has gotten "worse" though it really seems to be because of body changes and perhaps bad or inferior technique that no longer can be masked because of puberty - curves, weight. Unfortunately this has mentally tomrented her and made her lose confidence as well. She can no longer muscle her way through the jumps. It is sad because she isn't consistent enough, her programs are not great vehicles and she still is getting use to Canada. I am not so sure she ever will get back on track. I know Mao tried to re do or fix her tech issues and she never really did get solid and in the end started fading a bit like into sixth or so. I hope the same fate does not lie with Evgenia.

Just an observation about Med: She seems to be using a "purer" toe pick on the toe jumps, but she still seems to be picking really far inside (if that makes any sense) instead of more in a straight line? I'm wondering if that's throwing off her center of balance and causing some of the mistakes on the jumps (specifically the flip).

I hope next year Zhenya seeks the assistance of Shae Lynn Bourne for her programs. (I would wish the same for Alina, but this is probably not going to happen).

Tom Dickson would also be a great choreogrpaher. His programs for Satoko this season are so beautiful.

Yuzuru is two time OGM, so I don’t know why he’s exactly “poor“. He’s just more prone to injuries than others.

Lil’Bet didn‘t improve greatly under Orser, that‘s definitely true. She’s with Eteri now, though and while her Challenger events were really, really good, she unfortunately hasn’t continued on a similar path in the GP series. But it’s been too short of a time to really judge. I think we should wait a bit longer before we judge.

Baby Junliet Cha ( ) is in the GPF so I have no idea what you‘re talking about. Would you care to elaborate?

Jason, while still obviously not “there“ yet, just had the highest scoring SP without a quad. In the FS, there were still lots of problems but he won a silver medal, which is definitely a good sign.

Mental health problems are difficult, we don‘t know what happened to Gabby. But she clearly improved under Orser, he made her World Medalist and later National Champion which helped her get on the team off the Olympic Event in the first place, resulting in an OGM. Would she have got so far under her old coaches? I seriously doubt it.

Evgenia so far has clearly deteriorated. Her improvements are crystal clear in practice but what use is there if she can‘t show them in competition and they come at the expense of other things (spins and step levels for example) I do hope that her team has a plan and it pays off in the end. And that she finds back to her old mental strength. So, yes, the results have been disappointing so far, I continue to believe in her and Brian. You are perfectly allowed to not do it after what we‘ve seen this season so far. But please not act as if her teammates were poor or anything if some of them have reached more than they probably would ever have without Team TCC.

Gabby ended up with mental health problems, yes. We can play that game with Eteri, too. Look what happened to Yulia. Does that mean it‘s her fault? Probably not. We won’t ever know. Do Gabby’s problems mean it’s Brian’s fault? Probably not either. Personally, I think it‘s just not as black and white as it seems. Neither Brian nor Eteri are perfect coaches and neither are terrible either. And they certainly aren‘t at fault for what happens to every single of their students. Some things just can‘t be controlled.

Gabi just broke up with her boyfriend during the summer and took it really hard because she really was happy with him, adding to the already existing issues she struggled with concerning her body image, it was just too much for her. Not all her issues are skatung related

What are you trying to imply here? That Gabby’s mental condition is caused by Orser? If you don’t fully understand the issue, think twice before you make such deragatory statements, especially regarding as sensitive of a topic as mental health:disapp:

Could be, some of her jumps in practice and in competition seemed off axis right?

I think microwaves and the spoiler filled internet have turned the whole world into an incredibly impatient place. Remember when you actually had to wait to find out who shot J.R.?

sorry. but no. ;)
Just try to keep up a little bit. You kind of lost track of the conversation..
There's such a thing as sarcasm as a response to some nonsense comments) ;)

Hm. I actually read most of the posts, as well as the one you were referring to. I must have missed the sarcasm then even though I admittedly still can‘t see it. That‘s okay, though. We might have different perceptions of sarcasm then. ;)

There is a lot to unpack. I decided to step away for a day from the Zhenya topic to give a bit of thought on it.

Part of me thinks the biggest disadvantage Zhenya has put herself in is distancing herself from the local Russian competitions. We just can’t offer the level of competitions and events here in North America. I’ve long said that these events are a huge advantage that our skaters just don’t have. It would have been nice to see her in some Cup of Russia events. In that regard I think it would have been a huge benefit to have chosen a local coach like Plushenko or Mishin or even Turenko. Angelina Turenko has great programs year after year and would have Really helped Zhenya spread her wings. Coaching style and preferences aside I think the proximity and advantage of so many smaller events in Europe could have helped her to regain or maintain her competitive strength. Then again who would have expected her to regress to the point where it was actually so necessary. Her biggest strength had always been her performance execution.

There really have been some decisions made that are up for debate. Regardless of anything we say though the results do and will speak for themselves so there is no point in taking these discussions too seriously. Sometimes I think some folks here are just feuding regardless of the topic which is making it seem even more dramatic than it actually is. As a fan of the sport I’ve always respected and supported Zhenya. She’s great for it and she brought in a bunch of great fans too. It says a lot about her!

Serious question...has Brian ever completely changed a skater so much? Part of me wishes his team had embraced a bit more of what made her a two time World Champion instead of throwing seemingly everything that made her so great out the window. I’ve said it before but I miss her light and fast complex footwork and am less than impressed by the leg kicks and shoulder shimmies. It’s not just her though but that is in general for all skaters ;) I just hope there is enough time to see this thing thru. I have no doubt she has the ability but if she falls too far behind her funding may be reduced and I’m not sure she has the money to afford the training on her own or if it is even a financially viable option to make.

One more question: Has Brian commented yet? Is he owning this and deflecting the criticism from his student? I haven’t seen anything from him but I’ve been intentionally dealing with this in moderation.

Guilty Wish: I’d love to see her and Sima training together again ;)

I agree on this part, I too wish they hadn't been doing so many changes simultaneously. I feel that this all, on top of the enormous expectations, would make even a very resilient athlete crumble. The only thing I disagree with here is that sassy stuff isn't impressive with any skaters. There are some who excel at it, like Ashley, and I can see some of Brian's current and former students selling the programs better than Evgenia - Gabrielle, Yuna, even Joshi. But Evgenia is very different from them, and I still feel the programs are simply a mismatch. I hope she can still rebound, if not this season then the next one.
