2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

It might be mental, but maybe not due to seeing Anna's score.
Alina trains with Anna (and Alexandra and Alena) so she more than anybody else knows what they are capable of.

Maybe Eteri needs to hid behind the curtains for Alina too. Just in case.

But she has never competed directly against them. Of course she trains with them and know what they are capable of. Which is why it may psych her out. Especially since the other two juniors had yet to skate. There was a lot of pressure to remain number one.

Agree. Keep the short and get a new Free Skate for next season. Tom Dickson would also be an amazing choreographer to work with. The programs he did for Satoko and Rika are amazing.

I'd love to see Tosca performed to its full potential. And while I like her free program, I would LOVE to see her with a new choreographer, maybe someone like Shae Lynne Bourne. Though on the other hand, I loved this free skate dress and would be so sad to never see it again if this really is her last comp of the season. I'm just that shallow, but darn, that was a powerful dress.

That could be true. I didn't think of it that way.
That's a lot of firepower coming after her too.
90 TES would make quite a few of the men nervous too!

But knowing what they are capable of, I think Alina knew all along she pretty much had to be perfect in both SP and LP to win.
Even if their PCS wasn't going to match hers. There is a quite a sizeable TES gap in the LP.

And at that moment none of us know if those juniors can keep their quads for another 4 years.. From those 3 I actually see alena having the best chance to stay on top of her game

Strange...her jumps looked the most vulnerable to me today. She’s got fight though and her remarkable poise got her thru it. I’m not too worried about Alena though. I actually think Sasha has the best technique that will hold up over time but I dare not make predictions or get caught up too much in that thinking. I was actually a bit relieved to see how in control Sasha looked during her quad fall today. I think these quads are making triples seem much easier for her. She has an excellent success rate I would imagine.

Call me crazy but I have the most confidence about Tarakanova keeping her triples. She has tight air position, relatively fast rotation, is already quite tall, jumps high. And she‘s got amazing technique, too, that 3Lz is a thing of beauty that every old-school technique fan should appreciate.

Anna‘s chance will depend on whether she grows a lot or not. But considering her mom who seems to share a similarily thin and fragile look, it seems to be just her innate, natural body type. She relies on fast rotation and her upper body to jump but as long as she doesn‘t grow too much, it should be fine. Not everyone has a serious growth spurt. Zhenya had a similar jumping technique and it lasted her a long time.

Alena is a weird case. Her jumps are so high and beautiful that I‘d say yes, she‘ll keep her jumps with full confidence if... it wasn‘t for the leg wrap she’s having. It always seems kind of lose on every jump but her 3T in combo and she also seems to have a bit of delayed rotation which is absolutely beautiful but can turn out to be a problem too. I‘m fairly confident, though, as her 3Ts show that she can have a tighter airposition. I hope and think her team is working on that. Her lutz is also something I‘m keeping my eye on. Shallow outside/flat edge should be enough as long as it isn‘t inside. Hopefully she‘ll manage to keep it that way and not have it turn to an inside as she grows because I really don‘t want to have yet another favourite whose ”FLUTZ!“ calls from outraged fans I have to endure.

Sasha is a machine. Her body is made out of muscle. The height she gets on her quads isn‘t solely due to her being tiny and thus being able to jump high. She‘s got strength in her legs, that one. She jumps 2A without any preparation. She jumps high, rotates fast. Her landings are sometimes a bit rushed and seem rough but that‘s the only bad thing I can say about her jumps.

But commenting on puberty is a dangerous thing to make. Because we simply never know. Evgenia for example always looked like someone who‘d be hit badly by puberty, yet she managed to keep her small and thin stature for years. And there‘s also the thing with injury. It can happen to everyone. Anna literally broke her foot on a double. You can have just bad luck and slip of the edge and break your arm/leg/whatever. We just don‘t know what will happen. I personally wish all of them good luck but it‘s hard to predict how their future will turn out. That‘s why to my mind, Alina and Zhenya and every other senior girl in Russian FS who‘s trembling because of the 3A powertrio shouldn‘t focus too much on juniors but rather do their own thing, improve on their own rate. They can‘t do anything else anyway and beating themselves up won‘t do any good. Leonova is still around. Liza came back. Not all is lost. For nobody. Skating is a strange sport. We can never be certain of literally anything. That‘s why I‘m personally so reserved about “she is done!“ calls. Because no one knows the future and with a sport as slippery and exciting as figure skating, it would be a shame to. I mean, how boring would the FS have been today had we guessed all the placements beforehand? This way it was a HUGE sensation. And rightfully so.

Btw, because I haven‘t done it in here yet: Congrats to Anna, Sasha and Alena! You were all amazing.

Sorry for popping in like this - I couldn't follow this evening and a lot has happened since the event ended. Wow, what a day.
My question - has the team for Euros been announced and if not, when should we expect it?

I don't think we need to concoct conspiracy theories and become armchair psychologists regarding Alina's skate today.

The fact is is that everyone has bad days and everyone has good days. Not everyone can be Zhenya (in her prime) or like Yuna (even though Yuna had her share of bad skates I'm sure?)

Both Zhenya and Alina skated admirably, though not on the same day

Nastya’s PCS were a joke. 58? At Nationals? Anya and Alena both got fairer PCS (though Alena should get even more) why not Nastya? Her interpretation and performance was beautiful!

But congrats to the 3A! This is the best podium I could’ve asked for... it’s only missing Alina...
I completely agree with you, and I don't understand it either. Somehow I get the feeling that RusFed doesn't like her... Last year, it was the same. She gets better PCS scores internationally than at Russian Nationals, which means a lot! I just hope she doesn't give up because of that, as I really enjoy watching her, and I think she is unique and has real talent. I would have liked her to be on the podium. Does anyone know why on earth her PCS are so low? I mean, is there a legitimate reason for it, or is it just bias?

Ironically, if you combined them into "Medgitova" - their score would have been 224.28.
Medgitova would still be behind those "pesky" juniors - but would be top senior.

For some reason some comments were deleted, but I'll answer anyway anyway: I don't understand why I can't be concerned for Alina even though I'm not her fan? Do you think that I'm just sitting at home and wishing she'd break a leg or something? Or anyone else who isn't a fan of her for that matter. I've personally attacked a user who was writing nonsense about Alina in Zhenya's thread. I used to sometimes post in her fan fest, and recently I almost don't post (I don't remember when I've posted the last), and it's always related to her being cute with Masaru or something. It's situations like these that actually made me stay away like @Fluture.

oh God . . . imagine a combined 3A - Alenanya Kosbakusova

If she was real her thighs would crush my head like a watermelon

We could very well be seeing this podium in coming weeks too.
They can work out the podium positions amongst themselves.

I assume they will all be at Junior Nationals and Junior Worlds?
Is their a Junior Europeans? If not, there should be.

Junior Nationals for sure, and after today I'm certain Junior Worlds too. I believe there's no Junior Europeans though.

Zagitova should be way lower, her URs are all uncalled, but i get it, they want her to the team, if she botched everything in Euros i might see her replaced for Worlds though

Alina‘s their best bet at a (gold) medal as well as securing three spots. She did well all season long. Now she botched the FS due to reasons we don‘t know and I don‘t want to speculate about but honestly, it can happen. She did well at every competition she entered this season. This was one bad program. She won‘t botch Euros and she‘ll sort out what troubles she had to face today. And that‘s Nationals, what do you expect, this is basically a huge show of promoting the fed‘s favourite featuring insane PCS, uncalled URs and co. And certainly not only Alina.

And to replace her for worlds? :noshake: at that - excuse me - nonsense. She is their top lady this season and to drop her like a hot potato just because she had one bad program would be too ridiculous even for rusfed.
