2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I think Alina gets it right. As long as the pain isn't too severe she can continue to be active and once she's fully grown the pain should stop anyway. She's grown a lot lately, that'll certainly make her condition worse at the moment.

I don't think so. Eteri's statement is correct, as far as I know. If you have it, you have to endure it. The pain should go away eventually.

I had something similar to Osgood–Schlatter as kid and teen (never diagnosticated properly, and i just outgrew it later). It is uncomfortable, but then you kind of get used to it. It would hurt regardless, you can stay at home or go run around, so at least you have fun.
Also, stretching and proper exercises (which Alina surely gets) help to reduce the pains long term, rather than make it worse.

I'm uncertain how it works with the different levels in the Step Sequence.

This is how it all played out in the ladies free at nationals:

Level 4: Kostornaia, Vasilieva, Gubanova, Zagitova
Level 3: Shcherbakova, Trusova, Medvedeva, Konstantinova, Samodurova, Tarusina, Tarakanova, Sotskova
Level 2: Guliakova, Leonova, Talalaikina, Tsurskaya, Panenkova, Nugumanova

What is the criteria for getting level 4??

Edit: Just found the ISU Handbook. Level 4="Must include at least 11 difficult turns and steps. None of the types of turns and steps can be counted more than twice. 5 types of turns and steps must be executed in both directions."

Yes, but those steps and turns are not the only feature for level 4 tho. You also need to have full upper body movements (all three parts of the upper body - arms, head and torso, so if you have 'visible' 2 upper body movements you can get max Level 3). Also for Level 4 steps and turns should be in both directions - clockwise and counterclockwise both covering at least 1/3 of the pattern, with quick changes of direction at least once in every 1/3 of the pattern.

They all likely had level 4 planned, but might have missed a turn somewhere (usually on the 1 foot cluster some turns get flat/scratchy) which dropped it to a 3.

Most of the elite skaters do have level 4 planned, but its very hard at the moment of performance to find a balance of Level 4 requiremenets and all the GOE and program requirements. Some may go for steps and turns and other requirements i wrote about to get Level 4, but some may miss some turn - as twizzle for example or miss to perform enough quick changes in directions or enough upper body movements and choose to stay more in line with the music, character they portray in the program or to show the flow during the steps. They may 'sacrifice' level for higher GOE and IN score for example.

Wow - Alina is still batting 1000 with the level 4's this season.
Even with all the problems she had with the LP at Nationals.
I think that deserves some recognition.

I don't know how Liza is doing but Shoma Uno cancelled about a week ago so Zhenya might be the replacement for him. I guess Liza would've cancelled already if she didn't feel well enough to do the show on Friday?

Liza has already cancelled, but the website hasn’t been updated. Daniel Grassl confirmed it with a fan on Instagram.

Russian ladies is the topic of this thread not doping and not politics.

If there is new news, about doping, with a citation to a believeable source, please post it in a separate hread in the Edge.

Please stay on topic.

Let us celebrate what's in store for us this year. What a treat it is too! The second half of the current season; then a summer lull full of tense relaxation. And next season. The mind boggles: the dynamic Russian ladies contingent climbing ever-higher peaks! Japanese ladies growing stronger, on the heels of the Russians, and this is making for some thrilling competition. The burgeoning of Russian ladies' fs is rippling outwards to other countries too. Smaller countries and federations are scrambling to catch up. Some of the bigger federations are wallowing in self-pity, but sooner or later they will also start to acknowledge the forward momentum, and attempt to make up for lost ground. How intriguing are these next few years going to be!

Looking att Russian Nationals last year a see a few names that didn't appear this year (didn't they qualify?). Valeria Mikhailova, Sofia Istomina, Anastasia Gracheva, Lidia Yakovleva.

Any news on them?

Mikhailova didn't compete this season
Istomina had only one competition, 1st russian cup, where she was 6th, with 184 points.
Gracheva was 4th and 4th on her russian cups, with 182 and 191 points, and didnt qualify for rusnats
Yakovleva competed lots, but she was 9th and 8th at her russian cups, and also didnt qualify

I do wonder what's up with Mikahilova - whether she will continue skating or is injured or what

It would be a shame if she quit. I think she has more unrealized potential, but it'll be hard for her to get back to where she was before this hiatus. The Vasilevsky/Lavrenchuk camp where she supposedly went after leaving Plushenko seems like a total mess though :palmf:
