2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

IMO it would be a really poor choice if they didn't send liza to worlds over konstantinova. in my mind there isn't really any question as to who should be on the team. i think konstantinova most likely dug herself a hole anyway after yesterday.

I thought it was ridiculous given her performances at Jr Worlds. Neither had gone very well despite her 4th place finish.

Exactly. I could see the rationale to send her to Sr. Worlds but it made no sense to me to also send her to Jr. Worlds given how many talented juniors there were.

I would find it really surprising to see anything other than Alina, Sofya, and Liza at WC. Sofya and Alina have done enough this season to make their case IMO. Unless Sofya comes out and goes out of her way to screw up her FS on an epic level she should be good to go.

I also expect Stasya to throw down a good FS and still put up ~210. It’s kind of her thing :coffee:

Stasya with a 210 total score? I mean, yes, I also expect her to deliver a great FS because she‘s done it several times this season but wouldn‘t she need a 154 or so score for that?? The only one I could see potentially scoring that would be Alina and even then only if she‘s 100% clean.

A total score of 210 for Konstantinova is not going to happen unless she learns a 3A before the free. She would need 154 and only two people have scored that high this season Alina and Rika. Her SB is 135 internationaly so with a good free she could reach approx 190-195 but I dont see her getting over 200 even with a perfect free.

Hehe...I was so excited for my Cactus Rajicova that I mixed up their scores  I thought Stasya had a 64. I always predict scores wrong and misremember things so this is pretty standard operating from my end :hpull:

I think if Stanislava skates reasonably in the free (still worse than Sofia) there will be no skate off, she will get to go to worlds. But if she does worse and there is no justifiable reason to send her, they will do a skate off in which she is judged with HUGE PCS, and she will get to worlds that way.

How could they possibly justify that though if Sofya beats Stasya here at Euros and other than Nationals has had better results all season? I believe last year Stasya was 4th at Nationals and there was some justification to send her, as I don't think there was anyone else else with the proven results on the senior circuit last year, everyone else had a pretty mixed season, like Tsurskaya, Radionova, I don't think the latter did so well at Nats, or was dealing with growth and injury I am not sure if she was at Nats last hear? I can kind of see why they wold send Stanislava last year, jf she was favoured. This year though it would be an outrageous decision and make RusFed look really bad imo to choose not to send a skater who rightfully earned her place as number three this season.

I think Stasya perfectly clean at Europeon Championship could break into the 140’s.

I slightly preferred Hermione, but McGonagall was indeed a goddess.

Agreed. World's team is all but set. Stasya has a chance as an alternate. That's it.

You really think they'd do that? I mean, I have no doubts Stasya will skate better in the FS because she's been very consistent with her Anna Karenina this season but still... Sofia will probably earn the silver medal here and besides that she medaled twice at the GP, made the GPF, showed two great performances there and has made like what... a total of one mistake so far? They will send Liza and Alina to Worlds and even though those two are pretty secure to hold on to the three spots for next year (in fact, they have a great chance to bring home two medals) there's still the risk of Liza having been sick and Alina not being 100% consistent either. It would make way more sense to send a skater like Sofia who is consistent and delivers no matter what. Stasya doesn't even have a theoretical higher scoring potential than Sofia. They're on par internationally. Rusfed really needs to play it safe this year, losing three spots for next year would be a disaster with so many girls moving up.

I really like Stasya and she probably earned her spot at Euros (she did skate reasonably well at Nationals after all, even if she was pretty overscored on PCS) but I fear that even if she has a wonderful FS and somehow gets a medal, that SP should be sign enough that she's just not too reliable. I think politics can only push a skater so far. Stasya had her chance at Euros. Unfortunately, she didn't seize it. Just like Zhenya didn't seize it at Nationals. That's why she wasn't sent to Euros. Same rules for everybody. I wish the fed wasn't making excuses for anyone. Sofia, Alina and Liza are a good and reasonable Worlds Team.

I wish things were so simple.

The past two years this is all that's talked about Stasya outside of her FF. I have yet to see one competition she goes where her 'favoring' isn't mentioned. If anything, giving her any praise is taboo.

Agreed. So very predictable, regardless of how well she skates. It's certainly not "taboo" to bash Stasya on GS, so I don't know why it would be taboo to state the actual facts behind her supposed favoring....if in fact it's true. Instead, all I've ever seen are whispered vague rumors, hints, innuendos, etc. that to me come off as very mean-spirited and high school -- kind of like some of the characters in "Mean Girls."

Yes, of course Zhenya was the logical choice for Euros and Olympics last year. My point is simply that RusFed usually follows the results of Nationals no matter what. Last year they did an exception with Zhenya, but I can't remember the last time that they didn't follow the RusNats results.

They indeed follow the RusNat results for the first two skaters. The third is reserved for the Council of Couches and for special cases or injury or illness, such as Medvedva last year and Liza this year. I think it was clear that this season this 3rd spot would be reserved for Liza. Sofia went to Euros instead of Liza only because Liza is still recovering, but they clearly told Mishin to get Liza ready for Worlds. So Liza's spot is out of the question, as well as Alina's spot. If Konstantinova had a great performance at Euros, Liza would have replaced Sofia at Worlds, but...

The question now is will they take Konstantinova's spot and give it to Sofia? I think they should do it, although it would be unusual. They smartly didn't announce World's team and listed Konstantinova in Universiada, so I think they had doubts for her international success from the beginning. Yesterday's results only confirmed these doubts.

So, for me the team is clear and logical - Alina, Liza, Sofia. Keeping the 3 spots for next year is really important, so I think they should prefer a consistent skater (Sofia) over someone with higher scoring potential (Konstantinova or Meds) but with higher risk to bomb.

If Liza wasn't ill and, as expected, became one of the two top skaters at Rusnats together with Alina, then they would have decide for the 3rd spot between Konstantinova, Sofia and Med and would probably place highest value on their Rusnat skate. But when Liza became ill, she practically had the 3rd spot reserved for her.

I think the only chance for Med to go is only if Liza hasn't completely recovered and decides to withdraw, while Konstantiva fails gloriously tomorrow. And Med shouldn't want to go this transitional season; the pressure on her would me much greater than at all the other competitions so far and she needs some time with less pressure.

I for once have really praised Stasya since Helsinki for her improvements and great FS and mentioned she could be a contender for the team, but I still think she is very overscored/favoured nationally. It's possible to do both :)

Praying for cleanish Alina and Sofia tomorrow!! I really really don't want to see Alina in a skate off at the russian cup - she looks like she could use a break from constant competition and judgement before worlds.

Alina in a skate off? What? Why would anyone think of doing that? This girl needs a break. She‘s been competing none stop this season and she looks tired. Her spot for the Worlds team shouldn‘t even be questioned. Especially not if she wins her second Euros title tomorrow. But Euros or not, it doesn‘t matter. Not sending Alina would be a very, very bad idea. Yes, she’s not 100% consistent but she’s their best hope at a Worlds Gold this year.

And sending her to a skate off event with additional pressure is the last thing she needs. She‘s earned her spot on the team, please, leave her alone, rusfed and let her rest.

yea i don't get it either. i think she's lovely to watch. even if she's been favoured a bit in domestic competitions she 100% has deserved everything she's gotten this season. if she has a great fs tomorrow i think she'd still have a fair shot at worlds if 1. sofia does really poorly or 2. liza isn't ready. even if those two things don't happen but she still manages to do a great fs i could see an case for stasya being on the worlds team just because of her performance at nationals. it wouldn't be the most ideal imo but it's not like it would be outrageous either
