2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Bradie had a fall with UR, a step out, and missed a combo. Also lacking in artistry compared to Mariah. The fact that she was only 5 points behind Mariah in the FS is what's generous. They were both inflated but in relation to each other, Mariah should've been AT LEAST 5 points above Bradie, if not more.

In addition to the underrotated fall in lutz and missed toe-combo, Tennell also URed her 3Lz and 3T in the short, and +3Lo, +2Lo in the long, all uncalled.

Alysa was wonderful and cute but a girl not a woman. She has that coltish appearance which usually means her GOE's on her jumps shoudl be negatively effected. She does not have thea mplitude and power or zest of others. Bradie did ehr best but when she isn't clean her program and lack of musicality and presence shows up more. Mariah if she can land the jumps is the more traditional full meal deal American package. Liu tech is amazing. But has that coltish appearance in her jumsp - Like Tara really never had the power of say Joannie Rochette or Kaetlyn Osmond.

Mariah and Bradie are the world team. They could earn three spots back. With Russia really having issue and Canada possibly having no skater in the freeskate and Kostner not skating or lacking training/competition ready USA could be say 4th and 8th and win back three spots. Of course if things go real bad for the US and Japan, Russia all place ahead of the Americans as well as Kostner, Daleman then it is all over but the crying.

Is Daleman even on the Canadian team? She finished 5th at Canadian nationals and still didn't quite look like she had fully recovered from her head injury. Kostner has not competed since Worlds last year. I think the odds are good for grabbing 2 spots. The russian team will probably change before Worlds as it always seems like they drop whomever bombed at Europeans. Alina looks a little injured. It looked like she keep clutching at her left upper thigh during the free skate. Just speculation of course.

Cui is great. Hope she gets it together.

Liu... She's just 13, so I'll wait, but currently I'm just not sure what to think of her jumping.

‘So after Russia, now its Usa.
I dont know what to think about all of this rules...
How can we allowed baby kids competing against real women ?
I really think something should change in our sport, if we wanna build champion who will stay and grow more than 2 season.’

Wow.

I believe that if Bradie did not fall, she would have beaten Alysa tonight.
Even with Alysa doing 2 triple-axels, and Bradie having problems with the loop in the 3Lz-3Lo.

At the end of the day, you have to land the jumps.
Whether you are 13 or 33.

That to me was the theme for tonight.

I agree with him. Unfortunatly liu will be crushed by all this hype and her enormous talend might end up wasted. I mean she is not even eligible for juniors.:gaah:

Honestly, all the technical panel had to do was call Alysa's under-rotations (which she had the second 3A and the 3S) and she would not have won. But, Bradie and Mariah really threw away the title. They both made silly mistakes that they would not make in practice. The judges were willing to award them (justifiably) for their superior quality elements and superior SS but they really did not give the judges the chance to do that. I am not sure Alysa will be crushed by the hype. She seems very determined and focused. I am more concerned about her jump technique. She does not get a lot of height on her jumps. This will have to change as she grows if she wants to keep her jumps. I also hope her team works on her basics. Her SS are not very good and she is slow. She needs to improve if she wants to continue to have success.

Far too soon to be saying these young girls in Russia and USA will flame out in 2 years. We have never had girls at 12-14 doing quads and 3 axels before, nobody has any idea how that will last.

People said the same thing about Nathan when he was 14 and doing quads - said he was going to ruin his body. He continues to dominate the sport.

Alysa is also 13. She still has time before puberty to get more height on her jumps. I mean, getting height on jumps that you can rotate is a lot easier than getting height on jumps you can't rotate. She'll get there; her determination and coolness under pressure is to be admired, so let's not dismiss her too quickly.

Also, somehow I can't see the URs people keep talking about on her second 3A and 3S. They look rotated to me, although the landing edge is indeed wobbly.

I realised this season that it's kind of unproductive to talk about junior's jumps (and Liu isn't even junior yet). But Liu's only issues aren't lack of jump height. That kind of "efficient" technique is becoming increasingly common though, and I find it unaesthetic, but it "gets the job done". Oh well.

It does "get the job done" when you are tiny. But, if you grow you can't rotate at the same speed. You don't have to have extremely high jumps because a lot of height makes it harder to control the landings but you do need enough height to fully rotate and to get that height past puberty you need to jump from your legs. I fully agree that Alysa has a lot to work on. But, she is 13. All 13 year old skaters have a a lot to work on. I just hope her coach works on these things. Most girls will lose their jumps for a year or two while coping with growth but if you start with proper technique it will make it easier to regain them.

I am not disagreeing with you lol. Just lamenting the state of jumping.

Or cutting her pcs. I mean they are a crime even including her two 3a and national inflation. She is not anywhere near the young russian girl in terms of pcs as jonny weir said. I think the us federation will rue this day when they were putting so much pressure on a 13 year old enormous talent who is in the middle of her development. They didn't do her any favour with this title. Only my opinion of course. Bell and bradie however are also to blame for doing the same errors over and over. Its sad the whole situation

From what I could see, in the second 3A maybe the tip of her toe pick touched the ice ever so slightly at the 1/4 turn mark. I think calling it UR would have been too harsh. :confused2:

The +3S wasn't UR, but it had an entire 360 degrees of pre-rotation. Only two revolutions done in the air, but hey she landed backwards.

Yeah, she's... quite whippy (her toeloops, eek). But they'll work on it though. Just 13.

They've named the teams for Worlds, 4CC and JW kinda.

2019 World Championships
Mariah Bell
Bradie Tennell

Alternate 1 – Ting Cui
Alternate 2 – Megan Wessenberg
Alternate 3 – Starr Andrews

2019 Four Continents Championships
Mariah Bell
Ting Cui
Bradie Tennell

Alternate 1 – Megan Wessenberg
Alternate 2 – Starr Andrews
Alternate 3 – Amber Glenn

2019 U.S. World Junior Team Camp
Starr Andrews
Ting Cui
Hanna Harrell
Gabriella Izzo
Emmy Ma
Audrey Shin

Surprised Amber isn't a world alternate. Further more, what is this World Junior Team camp? Unless this is like Junior Russian nationals, they should send Hanna and Ting.

I do not understand the existential crisis over powerhouse tots winning gold at NATIONALS events. Alysa or the 3A are not robbing the seniors of any precious competitions at their current junior states. In fact, Nationals is the ONLY time junior and senior skaters compete in the same event, so ... what is there to be done, exactly?

edit: yay Ting!
