2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Polina also said that Eteri and she were in a long lasting conflict situation. It is really strange. I mean why a coach and an adult would go on that path with her skater, who was also in a difficult transitional phase, as a teenager?

Some people really like to nitpick, and trying to fit the words to your own mindset.

I would say we need to look at this from the perspectives of the both sides. My guess is that, while Polina was going through puberty, Eteri was dealing with a talented teen in an environment where you need a lot of discipline and patience. There is surely a lot of disappointment and frustration from from the grownup side also. Here you are, enjoy your conflict.

As a simple example, take the way Polina left without telling anyone, and see it from the coach's perspective. So, you take a bunch of youngsters to a camp, away from their homes. That is a lot of responsibility. Then, suddenly, one of them goes missing while under your responsibility. There is no note, no calls, nothing, and other people say she went to a walk. Imagine the amount of grey hair you will get for every 10 minutes the said teenager does not pick the phone, and please tell us how strained the relationship will be after that.
No, I do not blame Polina, and in fact i myself did this once as a teen on a school trip because the teacher that went with us didn't let me do something I wanted to. But it can be very hard on adults also, and there is literally no reason to imply the adult is a "bully" here.

Probably because people are worried for the health of these skaters, I mean they dont see only the results, the "images", but they see also the human beings behind the images.
It is also about the professional ethics of being a coach. Do the ends justify the means?

Nope. Where are all the people worried about Kihira's health for instance. She is a minor, just 2 years older than Sasha.

Not sure if the translation is correct, but just read a tweet saying:

Zagitova in her Puma interview: "At the Olympics I limited myself: it could be said that I did not drink water at all, we rinsed our mouths and spit it out".

What the actual ......

Just spotted this...

Forum Guidelines Update - Coach Bashing

Hi folks!

Just a note that the Forum Guidelines have been updated.

The below as been updated to include coaches.

17. Excessive "bashing" of skaters and/or coaches
Everyone has their favourite and not-so-favourite skaters and coaches. Please be constructive with criticism. Persistent, repetitive, unrelenting and pugnacious denunciation of skaters and coaches are not welcome.

I notice the words persistent repetitive unrelenting there

Great decision by the operators. This should help to make this thread more interesting varied and pleasant in future. Let us hope and pray.

I hope it's not true. If it is, it's really concerning, considering the importance of proper hydration.

It is not like the athletes are deprived of water for days on end.
No, diuretics and short abstention of water are a proven way of quick weight loss. No harm done once competition is over and the body is replenished.
Many sports are on a very delicate balance between power and weight. The obsession with minimum weight in trainers can be disturbing in the public eye though.

Just read up on the 'sacrifices' sportspersons in endurance sports have to make, medium and long distance runners, road and track cyclists, biathletes, etc. Here there is a real risk of long term damage to the system, but with good coaching and proper dieting, damage can mostly be avoided.

What's so funny about it?

It is hilarious that anyone would extrapolate Alina's comment about rinsing the mouth to mean anything remotely connected with water-deprivation. That is why it is either hilarious or something more sinister.

By the way, it is common practice among geriatric people to rinse and spit as a way of keeping hydrated, when for one or another reason they cannot drink much, e.g. sleep or continence problem. It is well-known as very effective means of maintaining hydration.
