I don't understand that either, especially with the rules change it is clear the last season's strategy simply won't work, points are not earned anymore for rotating you got to land those quads.
They started at Nepela with the layout which was to maximise everything he could do consistently and do well, the judges approved, and then everything started to fall apart... sigh...
Yeah, frustration is probably the best word to describe what most of us feel. I just hope that he is not too frustrated himself and has enough motivation to keep going. One day the stars might align for him, after all Caro e.g. was/is rather inconsistent skater but is the World Champion and Oly medallist.
I wonder if it might make sense for him to train a harder FS layout and then switch to a simpler one right before the skate (as they could have done in Minsk between the warm-up and his turn) to settle the nerves?

I honestly don't think Nepela was a layout intended to maximise everything Misha can do well. It was a "what can Misha skate while sick" layout, a temporary stopgap.

Nationals are not a realistic model to reproduce, he can't nearly drop unconscious on the ice at every competition and then be out of commission for 10 days. It's like a mother lifting a car to get her child from under it, and then being expected to keep doing it.

After Zagreb but even before the news of Misha's hospitalisation I thought he might die on the ice but make the team, because that's what he does, that's how he's managed to stay afloat despite his incosistency. But I also thought that it wouldn't make a difference in the longer term because that's not a sustainable approach.

Actually by a fighting mode I meant something like this (SP Cup Of China 2017) :

Also in Boston he was not ill, he just managed to make himself angry before LP somehow (obviously it is not easy or natural for him) to the glorious result, also by his own admission he went into an autopilot mode in the second half - so no overthinking...

It's not necessarily being ill per se, but about being pushed against a wall, "there is nowhere to retreat, Moscow is behind you" state. After everyone has buried him six feet deep he rises from the ashes, he is a survivor and that's why he is still standing. But each competition can't be a war of annihilation, I don't think Misha's psyche could bear it.

I think he's got what he needs to come back strong for Tallink, and Worlds if he's on the list. Especially when he gets the time to recover, I think he could surprise us. The fighting spirit has been there all along, but there's no miracles when it comes to his health. He wasn't going anywhere for half of the season, it's got to pay off now.

Wishing a good showing for Misha at Tallinnk! It’s interesting to me how the top Russian men (Misha, Samarin, Kovtun, Aliev) are spread out among the various pre-Worlds competitions, Russian Cup final, Universiade, and Tallinnk. I wonder whether they were given any choice by the Fed, and if so, why the skaters chose what they did? (Apologies if this has already been discussed.)

Misha had already planned to do a competition between Euros and Worlds. Kovtun and Samarin, and Lazukin, got their spots for Universiade at Nats, and while Aliev didn't get selected to anything, doing the Cup Final is his last chance to still compete this season.

Wow, this post-Olympic season has been rough for everyone on Team Russia. I hope they all get lots of rest in the off-season (especially Misha! The competitions never end for him).

Stanislava continues the trend of a good Sp - bad LP/ bad SP - good comeback in LP for Team Valentina ... sigh...

Now we have to wait which version Mika has in store for us this weekend

He will be skating second-to- last with only 6 guys taking part in total
