2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Liza sounds depressed but motivated for next season:

"A little girl in me still believed naively. But I am a fight er and will be back!"

Ehh.. I'm sad but still yay for Liza!

Competitive for me is not always competing for gold. You can be a top 10 skater and competitive.if you are still good enough to get GPs in Russia (and I doubt Zhenya will fall beneath that soon. That & she obviously has the influencial people behind her to get the assignments when there is doubt)

If she get's comfortable with everything and can roll her layout with more choreographic al content and secure/fully rotated jumps again she is competitive, quad or no. Let's announce the end of the next russian lady :)

Liza needs a decent choreographies not Mishin style to get the biiig points but that's not going to be. And the fed backing to top judges from lowballing her jumps, but that is not going to be either... But she will be competitive for sure!

Yes, because it‘s totally her fault that she was named to the Worlds team and thus she deserves to do badly or have bad luck with the judging panel. Seriously. :palmf:

I have to be fair and admit that this was not what I expected. I‘m over the moon for Zhenya but it doesn‘t quite feel right that Liza isn‘t going. But to wish any girl to do badly or get low scores on purpose just because she isn‘t my favorite and might be unfairly there (in some people‘s eyes) is just disgusting. I didn‘t wish Stasya bad luck last year either and I didn‘t think she should go. And I wouldn‘t have wished her bad luck if she‘d gone this year... why just why. None of the girls is at fault. I‘m a fan of the Russian ladies. I want them all to do well and I‘ll root for everyone who‘s at Worlds.

Tbh, I can only see the drama coming now. I hope Zhenya turns off social media and prepares calmly. She really doesn‘t need these comments.

I agree. Do not blame Evgenia. I can see many reasons to send Liza. She has fought back so bravely and with strength. Evgenia is working on everything including the lutz though it has effected her spins plus going th rough puberty. I doubt Liza wishes Evegenia bad because three spots are on the line still fr next year.

For all the talent in Russia they seem so vulnerable now that Evgenia and Alina are no longer consistent or going through puberty. The upcoming juniors all have the question mark of puberty. Sofia does not have the it quality at 16 that Alina or Evgenia showed. Liza is consistent but weak in pcs. Japan must feel confident. Worlds are in Japan. They could sweep the ladies. and are favored for two gold though Nathan might have something to say.

It was obvious and I've said it after Russian Cup. I have nothing against Med. But when I saw the GOE she got on the 3Lz (vs Liza) it was clear all the support was in her favor. To be honest I hope she skates well, otherwise people will unfairly eat her alive.
As for Liza I have NO WORDS. The injustice is to raw right now. I hope the support from fans will give her some confort.

RusFed just succeeded in creating another high pressure situation for Evgenia when she was already dealing with the pressure from her coaching change. I truly hope Evgenia pulls through this because this is so unnecessary. This is a disservice to her and letting her sit out for Worlds and continue working on settling into her new technique instead of pulling the highest stakes on a skater that was already struggling would have been the more sensible thing to do.

^ I didn’t say it’s the end for her. By competitive I mean being able to make the World/Euros teams. She can stay top 10 for sure but I doubt she will have enough to podium/make national teams. Liza has a chance and tbh she has been around for so long that she gets the benefit of the doubt from me because with all the Russian girls to go in and out, she’s still standing.

He must have a very loose definition of what fair is lol but hey, he’s the coach, what else can he say I guess

This is just... so frustrating. I feel for Liza. She really, really deserves the spot.

Not to be vindictive, but I kind of hope this decision comes back to bite RusFed. Poor Liza.

I agree. I have nothing against Zhenya herself, but I really hope this comes back to bite whoever made this decision. In some way, idk.

I think they were equally overscored at that competition. Evgenia in GOE ( definitely) but Liza in PCS. I love Liza but you have to be blind if you think she deserves the scores she got in transitions and SS. This decision was never going to be easy. Someone noted in the dedicated thread that Russia fed made its decision from a pessimistic place. Who will score the highest if they bomb? is the question they likely asked. The answer to that is Med due to PCS cushion. I suspect that was the determining factor. They aren’t wrong although that is a depressing way to make a decision.

I'm a bit ??? Apparently the quality of Zhenya's skating has not changed and she is still a real leader.
How about a realistic assesment? Are they banking on the same judging in Saitama as here? This is a dumb comment if you realisticly see the form she is in.
It looks like a setup for her world cup to be considered a failure with high expections because everything is great or there will be weiiiiird things going on.

Coaching council & RusFed great as always

Top Ten "Younger Age Girls" in Championships of Moscow 2019 (48 entrants).

As expected, Veronika won, although she faltered slightly in the FS, her 1st placing in both SP and Elements assured her gold medal. The other Eteri girl came in 6th.

As well as those two, it's also worth watching great FS skates by Sofiya Vazhnova and Liubov Rubtsova (CSKA) and Elizaveta Kulikova and Viktoriia Sinyavina (Panova).

1 Veronika Zhilina 2008 194.09 1 1 7
2 Sofiya Vazhnova 2008 185,96 5 2 1
3 Liubov Rubtsova 2009 176,45 7 5 2
4 Viktoriia Sinyavina 2008 174,33 2 7 4
5 Mariya Paramonova 2008 171,66 10 3 6
6 Alysa Dvoeglazova 2008 167,15 3 8 9
7 Elizaveta Kulikova 2008 166,67 15 6 3
8 Kseniia Melkumova 2009 162,38 12 4 12
9 Justina Whelan 2008 161.39 4 14 8
10 Anastasiya Lysykh 2009 161.28 16 10 5

Can you imagine being Liza, coming back with a steady 3A. The only Russian senior currently able to do a 3A and winning her first GP assignment then a podium at the other. Qualifying for the GP Finals and winning bronze there to then get sick and have the other skater who did not qualify for the GPF go to the World Championships over her?

She did everything right but still didn't get chosen. I truly am so sad for her.

I fear this is a loss/loss situation for both Evgenia and Liza.

This may be the last season for Liza to go to worlds. After everything she had gone through, it would have been a fairytale ending.

For Evgenia, pressure will be huge. While there are signs that she is getting better, her confidence is nowhere near high enough to cope with everything and perform at the biggest stage. Result of the championship may leave a huge a scar, which wouldn't be good for future seasons.

This is precisly the issue. The lack of any objective criteria in picking. Why ask who would score more if they bombed as long as Liza had solid performances all season? The only sub-par was at Dragon Trophy and it was not a disaster. Med did not have a single international competition with strong back to back skates all season.

It was a difficult decision, and either way, someone was going to end up hurt. Gutted for Liza, hoping all the best for Zhenya

You don’t like the Feds decision so you’re hoping for Zhenya to skate poorly? Very vindictive.

Well, there can be other ways, no Zhenya involved. I agreed with the poster and I was thinking more of them (whoever made the decision) facing a similar situation like this in the future and having to choose, unlike this time, the unfavoured one only because of this precedent. Call me petty. I'm that much frustrated.

Well it’s not doom and gloom. I’m sure Evengia is a smart girl and is realistic in her expectations at Worlds. No one is expecting her to win or podium, all she has to do is be decent and not fall apart which I think she’s stable enough to do that now. Plus most of the pressure will be on the Japanese ladies and Alina really. She has it pretty ok, she just needs to not be a disaster and she’ll be fine.
