Mikhail Kolyada

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m oddly relaxed about it all, or maybe I’m just numb after this season. He didn’t fall apart and he didn’t pop the axel, which is what I was most worried about given his practice sessions. I’m really happy the Saitama crowd got to see his 3A and a nice step sequence (from what I’ve read).

Of course TAT is already running her mouth, saying Misha got lucky with his scores. I don’t know how he finds the motivation in this kind of environment, but he does and I respect him endlessly for it. He probably isn’t ever going to be a relaxed competitor; that just isn’t his character as an athlete (though he seems to be a laidback guy outside of the rink). He can only continue to work on it, but I don’t anticipate any miracles happening. I just hope he does not fall apart in the free. First in the penultimate group could not be more ideal from a psychological standpoint, so that’s something. Then WTT (if he goes) and the long-awaited offseason.

BTW ice scope measured his 3A as the second highest of the event :) too bad they didn’t measure the lutz

ETA he said the rink was hot (consistent with Chen’s comments) and that he was sweating a lot during the SP, but that he can’t say it made it difficult to skate. And he’s upset about his mistakes.

:ghug:

Misha showed fight in thinking on his feet after the missed quad combo to avoid a disaster. I hope he takes a page from Stasya’s book and fights back in the free. (He’s keeping us guessing as to his layout, though, since he doesn’t appear to have practiced the quad sal or triple flip based on the reports.)

I love the photo with the bear that Tatjana Flade posted, and also the photos showing him smiling, like this one —

There's a flip, a new combo (?) and no quad salchow. I have zero idea about his layout, and fankly, it's impossible to know what he's going to do. Had he jumped a salchow, I'd say his layout would be 4T-3T/4S/4T/3F//3A-2T/3S1Eu3S/3Z, but without the quad salchow, I don't know.

I hope his flip will garner at least a decent score, so he can worry about one less thing in the future.

I really would like to see him under Mishin's coaching. He is working in St. Petersburg that wouldn't be too big change in Misha's life. I really don't understand why he didn't do this obvious step.

So, I've finally decided to wander in here.

Hi.

I'm Satine and I have a problem.

I'm a fan of Mikhail 'cactus' Kolyada.

Please, help me through this painful time :sad4:

Two quad lutzes, if you mean landed cleanly. And he had 'lost' the axel earlier. Intermittently. It's a pity tripling the 4T is such a costly mistake because then you have to jump 3-2. Otoh, he could have popped it to a double and got zero for it, so looking on the bright side. I was afraid of worse to be honest, like a popped 3A on top of the other things, we've seen that this season.

As for relaxing in Russian men's skating - not going to happen. The guys are going out there looking like they have been tasked with saving the Earth in an intergralactic war.

Yeah, I was referring to the one glorious lutz that is featured in the reaction of commentators vid. I haven't even watched the performance yet. The men's was so compelling that I ended up watching *the whole thing* on my phone in bed from 2 am to 6:30 am Chicago time, saying "I'll just watch one more skater. Oh wait, a skater I like is coming up." (And I paid the price working today, and now I'm wide awake at nearly 2 a.m. my time.) I posted in the general Worlds thread four groups in my wonder of it not being a splat fest, and soaking up the excitement of the early skaters who were just so flipping happy to be at Worlds. But then, as expected, the tension started ratcheting up in group five and the splat started (with Boyang Jin), so I quickly deleted my post, feeling like I was jinxing it (I know, ridic). When Misha came on, I ended up turning my phone over and listening to crowd response to what was *supposed* to be the quad-triple toe loop combo. From the silence and smattering of applause, but not gasps, I figured he had tripled but not fallen or popped. Then, seriously, I just checked Jackie's play-by-play and went to sleep for the next five hours. (I know, I'm a complete wimp.)

Lol at your comment about the Russian men going out there looking like they have been tasked with saving the Earth in an intergalactic war! I can only laugh at this stage!

Speaking of tension, I had to feel for Hanyu and the extreme closeup on his face when he was preparing to take the ice. I have honestly never seen a camera shot that close. Holy heck!

Welcome, Satine. We have yet to implement a twelve steps recovery program, but we usually support each other with some jokes every now and again.

He's had a bad season. Wise people expected this after the Olympic season. Too little chance to recover physically and emotionally. But it's not actually his first bad season. And he is not the first skater to have a bad season. At least he is fighting instead of just giving up.

On another note, an article has come out that calls Misha "the most hated skater in Russia" in the title. Really?

I saw that :palmf: they couldn't even wait until after the free.

Given how the rest of this season has gone, I really didn't think his result in the short was that bad, certainly nothing to warrant this kind of extreme reaction (though that is uncalled for in any circumstances). He and Lazukin can still very much keep two spots. If RusFed expected three spots to be saved given the season everyone has had and the stacked field here, then that is their problem. But I know Misha was disappointed in himself, which hurt to see.

While I'm fine overall with the performance, I must say that his jumps looked off to me. His axel wasn't as effortless as usual and his lutz again had that weird tilt to it. The pop didn't look like his usual pops either. I hope he's healthy.

Exactly. I hope that he understands that too. Right now I just want to give him a hug and wish a better luck for LP.
I actually feared worse things, it is just a pity that actually it was much easier to be in the top 3 after SP than anyone would have thought. A good starting order for LP I think (I am not sure how he is with number 13 though - it is a horror for me!)
It looks like he was not so much nervous as physically uncomfortable before hitting the starting pose (that he says it was far too hot confirming that) it could well be a reason for a botched take-off, the rest was a salvage operation and it was actually a very good one - all levels 4, a divine 3A and a good thinking on his feet about not putting another 3T after the lutz. Really under the circumstances the only thing he could have done was to try for 4lz but that would be very risky indeed especially he would have to make it a combination.
I take it as a positive sign that he didn't fall apart and made no single mistake after the first one. Especially the axel - after all the pops in practice and another one in a warm-up I am seriously impressed how he made sure he didn't miss that one. He is still the best of Russian (granted it was a black day for Russian men but so it was for Japanese!) but to hear the media it was a total disaster
God I hope he'll find strength and motivation to keep going

My two cent: I survived yesterday just fine only because of the thought before strategy - I'd convinced myself (successfully) that it was going to be a total disaster. As a result I was genially happy with the axel and the levels 4. Of course I am still upset but not as much as I would have been. I just felt that I could not take any more heartbreak...
Going to adopt same for tomorrow

Misha just finished morning practice

https://twitter.com/rockerskating/status/1108942570996957190

Kolyada: 3T, 3T, 3F, 3Lz, 3S1Eu3S, 3T, 2T, 4T, 3A, runthru (4T3T, 0T, 3T, 3F, 3A, 3S1Eu(ur)2S, 3Lz), 4T3T(ftdwn), 3T, 3A3T, 4T(step), 4T

I guess he is taking out the 4S, which I believe is a good decision. We'll see what happens with the flip.

New three-jump combo too.

I don't understand the meaning of that 3S-1/2loop -3S? It surely cheaper than 3lz combo?

I don't understand either. Is he having issues with his lutz?

Mishin and Kolyada don't seem to have a good relationship. I don't see it ever happening. Besides, Misha's issues are more psychological than technical.

He had experience with tripling the 4T and then having his 3T invalidated back in 2015. Once was enough to remember the rule. Last time with this content was at NHK 2016 and people attacked him for not jumping a 3-3 there too, even those who really should have known better. He really did all he could after that first mistake.

Yes, it was really time for him to have a bad SP, I kinda expected one. It could genuinely have been worse. Hopefully he is in good enough shape at least physically to produce a reasonable free skate.

I would love for Misha to have a great performance of his wonderful free to close out the season. That program is so special and it has never really received his due. His presence and posture are perfect for Carmen!

Most likely he'll have one more competition this season. That is unless he completely bombs Worlds. But we will see.

Even BESP guys didn't know about repeated jumps - I was like :scratch2:
But I must say this season those combinations with 2Ts it is like a curse I don't think he had one single 3-3 combination this season?!

I must admit that was well put what Simon said about Mika : ''almost overburden with talent"

Hi VK says that he was no show at evening practice - maybe there are some health issues we don't know about?
