2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Well, seriously speaking, she cited examples without specifying. If it is honestly not even the fact that this one person was in all three examples (1. the requirement to call by name and not the last name, 2. the requirement of an unreasonable weekly rest, 3. the requirement of a personal dance teacher) Eteri has many athletes with medals - it could be three different people.

Right! But you know some people are going to use it as an opportunity to stir up drama. It's (basically) the off season. People have to entertain themselves somehow.

I feel like she was hinting at Evgenia there

Really? I might be mistaken but I don‘t think Eteri ever called Evgenia only “Medvedeva“... at least not in the recent years. (from the videos I remember at least) They did seem to be very close after all and idk but Eteri always commented on how hardworking and modest Zhenya was, so it would be pretty low for her to hint at that. Somehow, I didn‘t get that feeling.

But maybe I‘m wrong here, I don‘t know the usual behaviour between coaches and students in Russia. I think it‘s pretty fascinating, though:

In this video, we have Sasha and Alina when Eteri is calling them, but also Tsurskaya and Kostornaya..

What do you have to do to earn yourself being called by your firstname? Win Junior Worlds and then you‘re upgraded?

People who want drama should notice that Eteri mentioned Stephen Gogolev in a good way (I'm still on the beginning) :)

In any command and obey structure, like Russian sports, it is common to call 'subordinates' only by their last name.
Besides, there are many skaters sharing the same first name it is inconvenient.

It might sound harsh in our ears, used to equality and first name terms, but most other cultures are still very much hierarchical.

And she is right, you are only as good as your last competition. New day, new challenges for everybody. No resting on your laurels, back to the grind.

I do think in a large, productive and successful rink like Khrustalniy, there really is no place for favouritism. Everybody has to work equally hard to earn his/her keep.

I understand it the way that she calls her skaters either by first or surname, just what comes to her tongue in that moment. But that not named skater  demanded to be called only by her (or his? :) ) first name under any circumstances.

That makes sense, yes. I wonder what they‘re going to do now that they have to Alyona‘s in the rink. It might be better to call them only by surname in that case.

Whoever that skater is, I don‘t think it‘s that big of a drama. Really, they are teenagers, success can get in their head sometimes. I actually understand that. They’re on top of the world one moment, I bet it’s hard to just go back and act and train like nothing’s happened. It‘s important for them to celebrate and be proud but then they need someone to keep their feet on the ground and Eteri seems like someone who‘s pretty capable of doing that. I think they learn quickly, every Eteri girl I‘ve heard in interviews, has said things like: “the last competition doesn‘t matter, the only thing that counts is what you show right here, right now.“ These are kids. I think we shouldn‘t forget that. They can‘t always act like saints. :)

I translated nearly 5% of the interview. Got to go now )

Oh, so that's you. :) I wrote in the comments that I'd like to help you with translating, but it says "locked" and "the video owner already provided subtitles".

It's almost an hour long :scratch2:

Eteri deserves every minute of our efforts on translating her. Once I saw this interview in my feed, I first came here, but apparently all I can do for now is just sit and watch it as a mere mortal. :)

You are not quite right, they can call by name, but it's like in school - if the teacher is happy with me, he could call me "Yura" or "Orlov" (we had three Yuriy in the class), but if I was guilty or did something bad then the teacher will shout at me only "Orlov !!"

Correct.

Dante, you have excellent translations, please translate if you can find the time. There they have a primitive functional translation, and with passes. I do not like such miserable translations very much - if you took it, then translate as follows - literally, in detail, with all the nuances, with reservations, even with the words-parasites, etc.

Eteri deserves every minute of our efforts on translating her.

Ain't that the truth. Love her or hate her, Eteri is easily one of the most fascinating people in figure skating today.

Thanks to all the good people working on translations! The rest of us are in your debt.

There are rumors that Putin and the Präsident of Kazachstan made a deal so some Russian ladies can start for kazachstan

Also just throwing it out there but Igor Efimchuk is born in Kazakhstan, if he doesn't find success competing for Russia i guess he could switch.

Just finished watching. With all these delicate topics about patriotism, race, personal conflicts, and peeing while someone's holding a test tube for you, I think I should take it seriously and do an entire translation by myself.

As someone who's been accused of being anti-Eteri (not true!), I just want to say I've been enjoying the quotes coming out of the interview so far. Her comments about skater psychology and physiology are sometimes harsh, but honest and insightful; you get a sense of what makes her such a great coach. And at least she admits that one of her faults is her struggle to get past grudges. Also, as an American, I appreciate all the good things she has to say about the country.

PLEASE. I need to know more.
