2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

But Izzo is not aging out of juniors yet? According to her isu bio, she's born in August 2001. I would expect to see her doing 2 JGPs plus a senior B (or two) next season, like she did this season.

Also, I think you meant that she's currently #126 on the WS list? Because the WR list is irrelevant for GP selection.

Some people call it WS and some WR. The list will be updated soon to remove old data, and that's what counts for GP selection.

There are still two more competitions that could affect the list: Triglav and Victoria. The US isn't sending anyone to either of those competitions, but other competitors could move up on the list ahead of US skaters.

Also: for SB, WTT does updated the SB list. WTT could alter the standings on that list if some of the skaters lower on the list move up into the top 24. Gabby Daleman, who will be out of the top 24 on the WS list when it's purged, could move into the top 24 on the SB list if she skates well at WTT.

Karen's instagram now says Cornell 2023, so congratulations to her! I wonder if she plans to keep training there. What's the rink situation like there? Her triple triple is huge, and I'd live to see her compete again.

World standings and world rankings are two different lists. WS includes three seasons--most recently 2018/2019, 2017/2018, and 2016/2017 with the earliest (2016/2017) being worth 70% of the points--and WR includes the current season only.

I have long been dismayed :( at the number of GS members who casually (too casually, IMO) use "WR" instead of "WS" as an abbreviation for World Standings -- although they are well aware of the difference between ISU World Standings and ISU Season's World Ranking.

Meanwhile, these same people otherwise are super-careful when reporting scores and such.

I never understood WS and WR until like a few weeks ago. I only started following figure skating back in 2018, so it's taken me awhile to understand everything.

With Ting, Hanna, and Alysa, we now have three US ladies attempting Quads next season. Hanna should hopefully stay in Juniors next season to make up for ground lost earlier in the season. Alysa vs Kamila will make for an interesting showdown. Ting is a huge question mark considering she struggles early on in the season and peaks later. Worlds spots will be a fight between Ting, Bradie, and Mariah whilst Junior Worlds will probably be Alysa, Hanna, and the other young ladies fighting for that third spot. If Kaitlyn and Pooja make appearances on the Junior circuit again, I truly hope they can do so injury-free.

This is going to be quite vague because I don't remember much, but who was the young (and really tiny) girl throwing down triple triples in novice (? I think?) a few months ago? I don't remember much more, but I think Nathan replied to an IG post of her and was impressed or something. I can't remember her name.

Her name is Isabeau Levito, but she's only 12 (turned 12 on March 3rd). At the 2019 Nationals, Levito competed at the Intermediate level, won the silver medal, and landed a 3S-3T and 3Lo-3T. She's moving up to Juniors domestically, but won't be able to compete internationally until the 2020-2021 season I believe. Her figure skating idol is Sasha Cohen and she reminds me of a mini Cohen.

Well, she certainly has personality. Rare to watch a skater that young and not be bored.

I'll be looking forward to seeing her development.

Cornell does have an on campus ice rink but unless she's made arrangements similar to what Nathan has with Yale she would likely have to train at an off campus rink.

On the other hand, Cornell offers several PE courses in figure skating so that if Karen can get a job teaching one of them it could really help with her expenses.

Karen Chen just placed Cornell '23 on her IG bio. Who's gonna coach her there?

Good choice, Karen! We spent a lot of years in Ithaca with one of our kids and beginning in June, I'm going to be spending even more time there! :) Beautiful place.

With Ting, Hanna, and Alysa, we now have three US ladies attempting Quads next season.

We have no athletes attempting quads in competition until they actually attempt the quads in competition. Alysa has attempted one once and now performed one once in a show. She seems the most likely to make it a reality. And it is entirely possible that the other girls will go for it as they have to go up against her as well as the other young ladies that are pushing those technical boundaries. These three U.S. girls have been competing against each other a long time. I think they will push & challenge each other. But I am always very hesitant to assume that we will see an element in competition just because athletes are training an element, releasing clips on video, or simply stating that they are training something. Off-season/summer discussions are always full of clips and predictions. But Kostornaia did not give us a triple axel this season. Max Aaron never tried a quad axel. Keegan has not been going for the lutz.

Sometimes we get them. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes the ones we least expect materialize into reality while the ones widely anticipated never show up. So we have three young U.S. ladies challenging themselves to learn and/or master some extraordinary elements. That's accurate. What they attempt next season will likely depend on many factors: staying healthy, clean execution, and the level of mastery of various new elements to name a few.

I concur with your statements. Also, I really hope Pooja can start going head to head with Alysa, Ting, and Hanna. The four girls have been competing against each other since the Novice level and it was really saddening to see Pooja have to withdraw at Nationals. Pooja may not have the most technically difficult elements down pact, but her artistry on the ice can be harnessed into something really special. Here’s to good health and huge strides for the US ladies!

Congrats to Karen for heading off to Cornell. I'm bummed though; I live near Cornell but will be moving away before she arrives. :sad21: It would have been neat to meet her again.

Congrats to all the US ladies competing this past weekend so successfully! Also, Isabeau Levito is  I've been watching her come up the pipeline for a few years and really like her. I hope she continues to do well.

There is also Mia Kalin, age 10 Novice this past season with 3Lz+3T (has all 5 triples), 5th at Sectionals (placed 2nd in FS). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tZb6s9Gml0

What a talented young lady, hopefully she stays healthy and continues to improve. Also, I hope they work on the under-rotation calls for the 3Lz-3T. Her style is very Russian-like.

PS: She’s a Kamila and Rika fan. She seems to look up to the Russians A LOT.

I wonder what will happen with Karen. After she posted " Cornell '23" in her bio I thought, okay she is retiring and moving on to college life. Awesome she got into an Ivy!!!! Then, she posted a beautiful 3lz-3t. Does this mean that she will continue? I wish she would put out a statement or USFSA would interview her about this. If she does continue, how will she train at Cornell? I am sure she can make arrangements like Nathan with the rink on campus, but she needs a coach. She has been getting back from injury etc. I don't think a Nathan-esque situation would suit her to be honest. I am just very curious. Of course, I still wouldn't rule out retirement even with the 3-3 post.

Her triple triple is half cheated and she hasn’t done proper clean ones since her junior years.
