2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Short interview with Sof'ya Akat'yeva here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJmbixpMvcA
You can hear the Champions on Ice show in the background, but there was time for a talk.

She started skating at 3-4 years of age, and has been invited to Eteri Georgiyevna's selection when she was 9. Sof'ya is eleven now.

Sof'ya, who often gets called Sonya (?) only has learned the 4T and 3A since New Year and got them solid only a couple of weeks ago, but she wants to compete the 3A in her coming SP and the 3A and 4T in her coming FS.

She has very nice memories of participating in previous season of "Ice Age, Kids", almost daily rehearsals and training a Khrustalniy made for a full schedule.

She was a little apprehensive at first about skating on the smaller ice surface in the show, without a boarding etc. but after the rehearsal she was confident again.

----

PS: Experiences like these shows do clearly help young prospective skaters to master any small fears they might have.
#TeamTutberidzeForProgress has a wonderful prospect in Sof'ya.

An idiot observation, but have you noticed that most of Eteri’s girls (including Evgenia) have veeery long hair? Does it have to do with gravity center or something?

of course - Trusova has longest hair, Shcherbakova is second by this parameter (it's obvious, you see).

As a matter of fact long hair is one of the main features of female beauty in Russia.

She also said that she wants to explore all quad jumps and become an Olympic champion :)

Oh, I didn’t know it was a beauty feature in Russia. I always wonder how Sasha gets to put all that hair in a bun [emoji23]

I will reveal a great secret - they are girls

??????? what you mean "...in Russia"? In everywhere, I guess :)

There's long hair and then there's Trusova/Shcherbakova type of long hair. In the US, Alina would be considered as having long hair and her hair is probably not even half as long as Trusova and Shcherbakova.

It gives them the power to do quads. That’s why Alina and Alena have been growing their hair out the past couple of seasons. It’s in preparation for quads.

One may train her hairs to behave per command.
Adding or loosing some momentum when rotating and stopping the rotation.
Some varnish over the tips, small weight, would amplify the effect.

Better to develop even mediocre Jedi ability.
5Lz will not wait forever.

 The long hair of the girls at Team Eteri is quite a sight to behold!

I can't imagine having hair that long, but then I have super thick hair where as the 3A's seem much lighter. Sasha T's is particularly impressive!

Sofia is amazing. I mean, she's ELEVEN! And her jumps aren't teeny tiny either. Her 3axel is big and looks like the technique is sound and has the potential to get bigger as she grows (in contrast to Alysa Liu who I fear will lose her 3a as soon as she grows even a little). Has there ever been an 11 y/o female skater that has a 4toe and 3axel? Is Eteri the jump coach who is teaching them these jumps? Or is there a jump specialist taking care of that? It's just amazing how many skaters under Eteri have some phenomenal jumping ability (in addition to good skating skills). Very impressive.

She truly is amazing. I think her biggest advantage is that she looks to be quite sturdy and strong, more like Sasha than Anna for example.

As for the jumps, Dudakov is the jump specialist in the group. Their advantage is that they can cherry-pick skaters they want to join their group. So, naturally, they get skaters who have amazing abilities even before joining the group. However, they obviously know their job well since it's truly amazing how much the girls progress in such a short amount of time. And this is true for everyone: Alena and Sasha included.

Even though Anna can land quads, you can see some remnants of the "old" Eteri technique when she jumps. However, it's only uphill from here, and they've been learning a lot, including how to better teach their kids. It's a relatively young team after all.

Where I live, hair that long is considered ugly and out of fashion. Only religious women wear it. Nobody likes it. That’s why I made this observation. It’s a matter of culture and fashion. Nobody where I live has hair that long.

Glad I'm not living there.

Wow :) And where are you living, if it's not a secret?

ahahaha, I agree! :laugh2: That reference is painfully specific to russian culture! I would also suppose Edwin is older than 30, there's no way people under 30 would know that

Well, this is not necessary - I'm 23, but of course I know who Alice Selezneva is :)

Even I know who she is, though I did not read any of her stories. Till now from Kir Bulychev I've read only - well, I believe russian title is Посёлок, in my country it was published under the name The Earth Is Too Far.
