Ladies - Free Program

The CoP says a '-3' GOE is given if:

Minor problems in three or more phases described in (-1) or major problems in two or more phases described in (-2) or any of the following individual errors:
- fall;
- severe change of
edge on take-off of
flip or lutz;
- lesser rotation
than required

Uhhh, no. That's not how CoP works. She already lost points for popping the Loop. GOE scores are about the quality of that element in isolation ONLY.

Uhhh, no. That's not how CoP works. According to ISU Communication 1396 (Changes to Singles and Pairs Skating, 2006-7 Season) under Guidelines for Judges in establishing GOE for errors in Singles Short Program elements (p. 6) "Less revolution than required (wrong element) requires GOE -3" and since the "One jump combination consisting of a double jump and triple jump or two triple jumps" is a requirement of Ladies' SP, Asada had a required -3 GOE for her 3/1 combination.

fortunately, kimmie entered the senior rink a bit earlier than the other 3 girls who were respectively junior world champs from 2004 to 2006, kimmie never beat any of them in junior rink (except for last season when miki was out of form).....it is just kinda conical that some of the guys still think she should medal at this year's worlds like last year's. i don't think she's in the same league either technically or artistically.

now i'm counting on mirai and caroline altering the situation for US ladies.

One of the cutest moments in Ladies Free

I thought it was absolutely adorable when Valentina Marchei almost skipped across the ice after her long program. She was obviously so pleased with her performance, with such a joy of skating that it was really cute to watch. Just a "warm fuzzy" moment for me. :)

Congrats to all the medallists, and congrats to Joannie for moving up so much. Hold your head high, Jo - let this be a building block for next year. (I just hope next year they send someone with you who will hold up their share of the workload.)

That's a very poor rule and needs to be fixed.

If someone else had done a REALLY bad 3Flip/1Loop combination, almost falling on it, they would have received that exact same amount of points. The rules should just impose a 1 point deduction. The GOE scores are there to define the quality of the elements.

IN ANY CASE, I'm probably fine with the overall results. Although MAO was underscored for the Short Program (not only because of the combination but also because her PCS should have been higher), her PCS for the Long Program look WAY too high. I still have to see the LP performances, but unless Mao suddenly became way more artistic and gave by far her best performance of the season with that program, there's no way those second marks were deserved. The sub-par judging equals out on both ends. :rolleye:

I agree. Skate Canada has to recognize that Mira Leung is not their second-best bet for worlds. They need to give some other younger skaters the experience. The question is - who? Who is there right now, who is even attempting triple-triple combinations? Pairs have "the next one" - they have arrived -Dube and Davison. Dance has their "next one" - Virtue and Moir, who also served notice in this worlds. The men have Christopher Mabee and possibly Shawn Sawyer if he can get his jumps stronger, and Patrick Chan in the near future. Who is there for the women? Why are we so weak in Canadian women? The field just isn't there. Female skaters from all over the world come to Canada and take advantage of our coaches and our choreographers, but the Canadian women have all of this at their disposal and they're still not keeping up. I think the blame has to go to Skate Canada. They have to push them earlier and they have to be harsher - your spins suck honey! Watching the Juniors, we were lucky to see even a single triple lutz!

Congrats to MIKI!!! I'm so happy for her after last year disaster. She really deserve this gold medal, because she did TWO fantastic programs. At the beginning of the season, when I saw her program skated so beautifully at SC I hoped in my heart that she could win the gold at Worlds. I'm really happy!!!  also to Morozov who lead Shizuka to Olympic gold and Miki to Worlds gold. And Takahashi to Worlds silver.
The SP gold goes to Yu Na Kim for the great interpretation. If Carmen is Katarina's music, Tango de Roxanne is Yu Na Kim's music.
Poor Caro, but I'm happy for Valentina Marchei, who skated greatly this year. At the Universiadi, Euros and Worlds. She needs a triple filp and loop, now.

THe sad thing is, I think next year, Canada can only send one.

If the Program Components in the women field had the same weight or factor as the men; Mao would have been our gold medal. I find that interesting. Of course the judges may have inflated Mao's PCs .
Miki
Short TEs 38.67 PCs(mutiplied by a factor of 1.00 as the men are) 36.64 Tot.75.31
long Tes 67.66 PCs( mutiplied by a factor of 2.00 as the men are) 74.31 Tot. 141.97
tot. 217.28

Mao
short Tes 31.20 PCs 37.55 tot 68.75
long Tes 69.64 PCs 79.36 tot 149.00
tot 217.75

And Mira placed 24th. Might as well be in juniors. My point is, Myriane may have more potential and maybe she should get the support Mira is getting.

all this talk about Myriane, but Cynthia Phaneuf is still around. Just thought I'd add that cause she did place higher at nationals.

She bombed terribly at Jr. worlds, and she is older than Mira.
And Miki is older than Mao, and she bombed at the Olympics.

I'm not a huge Myriane fan or anything but she did seem quite solid with strong jumps in the one LP I saw (Canadian nationals, I guess). She's 6-1/2 mos. older than Mira - meaningless.

No one is immune to laying an egg from time to time. It's just about the overall improvement in the skating. As another poster said, look at Arakawa's ride to World/Oly Champ and Ando's ride to World Champ, which included 15TH at last year's Olympics. I would advise Canadians to not give up hope for Joannie or Mira, and for the American skaters to hang in there and keep improving. Lots of skaters just brought it to the table this year so it made it that much harder to win or even medal.

No, you're the one who is wrong. A triple-single results in a -3 GOE. The same thing actually happened for Mao last year in the Junior Worlds Short.

Mao was not robbed at all. Miki is the deserved champ! Congrats to her and all the medallists.

Poor Carolina. :( Just a disappointing skate from her. And overall her SP is so much better than her LP. But I'm extremely excited for Nakano placing 5th for the second year in a row. And she went for the 3A for the first time in a while - kudos for the bravery!! And Meier managed to finish Top 7 even with two subpar skates.

Great competition, and such an improvement from last year! Clearly, 3-3s are necessary to contend for podium finishes at Worlds now. Skaters need to be at the top both technically and artistically to contend - otherwise they have to hope for a ton of mistakes by better skaters and settle for lower finishes.

Please. Canadians have been VERY patient with Mira - it's time for her to deal with her issues. Did you read about her boasting before Worlds - and then to get a 24th (last) place? Don't you think that indicates some kind of attitude problem?

She and Joannie shouldn't be compared. Joannie is way above Mira in both attitude and results. Joannie has EARNED the loyalty of fans and the Canadian federation.

About Nakano: did anyone notice that all three Japanese ladies are in the top 5? That's amazing! What a skating output for a country with less than half the population of the USA!

Japan was an up and coming force, so no surprise. Also, given that the competition was in JAPAN...

As for Leung and Rochette- I think the latter still has promise and maybe she'll pull herself together and reach higher. I guess I'll stop commenting on Leung 'cause I really don't know that much about her besides what I'm hearing from many posters (that she has a bad attitude). If it's true that she was "boasting" before Worlds then this would obviously be a lesson for her, right?

and FYI it wasn't meant to be a comparison. They're both Canadians after all, aren't they?
