2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

The participant list is a bit suspicious because it does not include Maiia and Daria. The latter is already given a JGP assignment while the former is included in the substitute list. But maybe that's because they're not in Junior team? However, Gubanova is not on this list either and she is a member of that team. Hope they add more skaters, but there is only 5 days left and I'm afraid the list can be correct.

The list is not correct - it is the main junior team for all disciplines. I think everyone on the JGP list or sub list will be invited + anyone else age eligible on the national novice and junior main/reserve teams. The remaining spots are wildcards - likely skaters who are on the main junior teams for Moscow or St. Petersburg ie Safonova

I think when Gubanova was still with Buyanova and when she gave that interview, they might have been aiming jgp. But since then she moved to Rukavitsin, he might have decided otherwise, not sure
I think if Tarusina gets jgp, I see no reason for Gubanova not to get one.

Gubanova was not on the sub list for the 1st or 2nd event, so if she is doing the JGP she isn’t even eligible until the 3rd or later events. Unless she or anyone else does really well at test skates, I don’t realistically see much changes to the JGP Sub list vs the original list for the 1st JGP. Maybe 1 girl added if they showed great progress over the summer, but with the depth of those already on the list it will be hard to break through.

Updated info: junior test skates are scheduled to 14:00 MSK f

The preliminary list of participants (by the ChannelOne):

Petr Gumennik, Arthur Danielyan, Alexey Erokhov, Georgiy Kunitsa, Andrei Mozalev, Yegor Murashov;

wait, Erokhov is a junior ? lmao

I’m sure it will be 3A+COMBO it doesn’t make sense the other way since they know that jump was meant for the combo as a 3Lo and 2A are required. It’s not like seniors where 2A or 3A is acceptable.

It is not obvious to me. Say, a skater does not have a 3A combo but she can land a single 3A. Then if she does 2A, 3A, 3Lo she may pretend that 3A was intended to be a combo. With good GOE 3A may bring more than 10 points. But won't it be the system cheating?

Actually, Christine Brenann is pretty notorious for HATING Tara Lipinski during Tara's skating career. Christine was a Michelle fan, and yes she thought the wrong American won. The depiction of Tara and her family is nice at all nice in Christine's book (The Edge of Glory, I believe), while extremely complimentary to Michelle.

Here's an interview with Christine in 1998 after the event: https://www.salon.com/1998/02/20/featurea_9/

I think if she had been allowed to by her editor, Christine would have 10000% written an article titled "The Wrong American Won" in 1998.

I just read the article you linked, and I have to say, Christine Brennan is quite diplomatic. As a Kwan fan, I probably would not have been so nice with my words. I've quoted some of what she said:

"The judges left a little more room than I thought they would, and Tara just ran away with it. She filled the gap and did it, did everything she had to do and more. She stole the show. She won tonight."

"I like Tara's skating. I still think that Michelle, when she's on, is the better skater. Tonight, was Michelle the better skater? I don't know. It was that close."

"Tara is not as deep as Michelle, she's not as inquisitive. Michelle is a gem. She's one of a kind. Tara is a fighter, she's a competitor, a feisty athlete out there."

Probably the most insulting thing she said was "Tara is not as deep as Michelle," to which I respond Tara was all of 15 years old. Find me a 15 year old who is deep. I'm not going to argue about whether Christine Brennan "hated" Tara Lipinski. I didn't follow Christine Brennan then. But this article hardly proves that. If anything, it makes me wonder, why couldn't she have written a diplomatic article like that when Zagitova won?

Judges know that 2A and 3Lo are not supposed to be in combo so the only option left is 3A. It'll get +COMBO and automatic -5 GOE because it's not done according to requirements of short program no matter how good it was.

Why would a skater plan to do a solo 3A, when they could do a 3+3 with a lutz or flip for more points? (I mean if a skater can do a 3A, they can do a 3+3 with lower jumps) They're just leaving points on the table by choosing not to do a combo, I can't think of why anyone would do that.

That is why Alysa is doing the required 2A first - so the judges already tick that off as her 2A and then the 3A+3T attempt that comes after automatically counts as the combo, since 3Lo is the required jump.

I know, I just meant that she's probably not in the worse position compared to Tarusina in general in Russia (good SB, good placement at RusNats), so if they wanted to get jgp, I think they could have. But it is what it is.

Gubanova probably needs to display some real good behaviour and serious attitude first to convince FFKKR to send her to any JGP event later in season.

Tarakanova probably did well over the summer or is sufficiently pushed forward by Snow Leopards as a worthy contender for JPG. She and Tarusina are known to be fierce fighters, while Gubanova only feels entitled according to that dreadful last 'interview'.

Still, FFKKSPb might feel the need to push one of their junior skaters, since most of the JPG skaters are from Moscow, so who knows how it all pans out and which better skater’s chance will get sacrificed for politics sake?

PS: can somebody direct me to the preliminary list of proposed JGP contenders, if there is such a list?

About the list of girls at the junior test skates: does this mean that poor Safonova wasn’t invited?

Apparently, the list is incomplete. In ice dance they have 12 teams so maybe there will be 12 girls too. I think Safonova has a good chance to participate as her results last year were quite good.

I would assume that all the girls that are listed for a JGP so far or listed as subs will be at the test skates.
This would be:
Kanysheva (1st JGP)
Ushasheva (1st JGP)
Tarakanova (2nd JGP)
Sinitsyna (2nd JGP)
Frolova (sub for 1st)
Khromykh (sub for 1st)
Tarusina (sub for both)
Valieva (sub for 1st)
Vaslileva (sub for 1st)

The only one here im not familiar with is Frolova but the rest seams like good choices for JGP. Wheter Gubanova will be there or get a JGP is anyones guess. If she doesnt do JGP she has a pretty good chance at being substituted in for a GP if one russian drops out. (She should be first on that list now since Tarusina seems to be doing JGP)

12 girls would seem like a good number since it meas 2 full groups of 6. That would leave space for 3 more appart from the ones allready listed as JGP contenders.

I'm starting to think that is Gubanova's strategy. There are always withdrawals each season, so she's probably thinking let's do Senior B's/Challengers and hopefully a SGP will open up. If she does one JGP she's ineligible for a SGP spot later in the season. I'm just not sure staying junior will help her anyway. She needs to be seen as a senior skater. She skates like one.

Tarakanova active on YouTube again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq77EzgF4nA, how to get skater abs ;-)

She’s e quite a character and fun to watch. Where does she find the time, given her expensive training and JGP preparation? But it is probably also a means of relaxation and stress relief for her.
And she is a good vlogger :-)
