2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

What she obviously needs is for someone to tell her (if she hasn't learnt it so far) that karma might be slow in catching up (being gazillion years old) but it does, eventually, and kicks you in the butt.

No telling her about karma with only scare her. hopefully her new coach or one of his assistants can pull her aside and explain the rights and wrongs she said on the livestream and the Rodina interview. if Nastya doesn't understand from someone she respects that what she said was wrong then she will have learned nothing and probably do it again. That would be a disaster. Right now she still has time to get off to a good start with her new training facility and new coaches and a choreographer many think will work well with her. :)

Next thing I want to hear about Nastya is that she is training with her new coach. I was hoping actually read something about her skating today and then I get hit with all this other stuff what she said about Alina on a live stream. SMH.

Where the heck were this girl's parents and coaches? How can you not notice your kid/pupil has this mindset, or realize that this mindset is wrong? And then to not stop them from making these public comments.. There are so many young skaters who will get jealous but none of them had this issue, something went very wrong somewhere.

Do we think Buyanova kicked her out because this was her attitude in training, or if they saw this media shitstorm coming? Her career is over; her skating was already on a decline and the federation won't put up with this. I don't think the fed would even put up with this attitude and these comments from an olympic champion. There's no need, it only tarnishes their reputation and there are hundreds of talented skaters in Russia with hardworking and humble attitudes.

Your first paragraph? she had no one to help her with the mental aspect of figure skating and being a teammate and friend. Sad. Your second and final paragraph scares me. I certainly hope with her natural talent that her career is not over. That would be tragic. I enjoy her programs and music and I want to see what she's going to come up with next season post puberty.. I know you like her too Color but I don't want to hear that her career is over. That has to be an overstatement on your part. Her new coach just accepted her a couple weeks ago and she's on the senior national team as a reserve. I do not want to see her skating for Belarus or some other country. But if it comes to that then that's what has to happen. I think she has one more season to make her mark and show the improvement that she needs to the Fed. Good luck Nastya.

Gubanova has a huge head. That much is very apparent. Truly one of the ugliest displays of jealousy this sport has seen in recent times. It’s a good thing she’s pretty much irrelevant these days, cause can you imagine what she would be like if she were actually competing at the top level?

I'm curious... Has there ever been a grand prix final where all the participants (of the same discipline) represent the same country?
Is that possible or is there some kind of rule against it?

We've already had the JGPF with 5 russian ladies. Could something like this happen at the senior GPF this season?

A quick skim through Wikipedia suggests that the most any one country has managed in Seniors is 4 (Russia a couple of times, Japan 2012 senior men)

I mean theoretically obviously it could, since there are enough talented russian ladies competing, but I would be on probably at most four russians, since it needs a mix of talent, luck with assignment and how you skate that day

In JGP it's quite possible even without 3A this season. It's strongly depends on national composition of JGP events tech panels where Liu will participate. If all her usual carrots will be called - she isn't gonna get scores higher than 180. But even if they will be wiiling to close eyes on her mistakes or make calls more leniently than it should be made (i.e. UR instead of downgrade etc.) - there is still Liu's own inconsistency factor. It's highly likely she will have falls/bad landings/lost levels on spins etc. and her PCS should be quite moderate too. All in all Russian ladies are much more consistent in all elements and with very high BV (3-3 combos) to boot. And with all respect - all other ladies except Liu are not gonna be rivals for Russians. They all suffer greatly from inconsistency and they don't have high enough BV to compensate it as Liu.
On other hand in senior GP it's much less probable outcome. Mostly because more power the federations have there to manipulate scores through their judges - and because there are at least two very strong skaters who are gonna compete on equal terms with Russians - Kihira and Tursynbaeva. Still, if both of them are somehow flops and all other Russians are solid as usual - it will be very hard to arrange GPF without 6 Russians

I'm mostly excited about Alysa vs Konstantinova vs Hosoda match up that's coming on Aurora Games
That's going to be something!

Russian Ladies had 4 at GPF in 2014, 2015 and 2017. I think this year it might be 5 Russian ladies and one Japanese:clap:

I
am sure Alina would be hurt by this whether Nastya is Russian #2 or #10. I hope Nastya apoligizes to Alina in some way. Even though it was a year and a half ago that was no way to talk about your sports olympic champion and a compatriot to boot. Gubanova is learning hard life lessons lately. :eeking:

5 is doable. 4 probable.

No way to talk about any athlete. Olympic champion or dead last at nationals. Compatriot or someone from your biggest rival country. Doping is one of the most serious offences from an athlete. Not something for an athlete with any ounce of good sportsmanship to accuse another of.

Perhaps her parents and coaches feel the same way? Gubanova was a precocious jumper/skater. Zagitova went from having only 3toe to all the triples in the course of a year. I don't find that shocking. Sometimes, something CLICKS in your head/body and you have a massive improvement. I personally went from no doubles to all except the axel in one week once I figured out the timing and rhythm and feel of a double. So Zagitova's rapid improvement doesn't surprise me.

I was hoping she would have a long, held movement, she is certainly capable of it.

I get what you mean but I think that choreographically the program is just perfect because all those fast movements complement the music somehow. She could hold some movements for a few seconds longer or express her emotion more openly but I think that it's obvious that Alina has matured and connects better to the music. I've been waiting for something like this since her Black Swan SP and I am really glad that after last year's disastrous glass breaking effects and whatever, they've come up with something so elegant for her. I definitely love the spiral "kick" after her spin, that was so cool. And idk but to me it seems that this program is more complex than what she's done before. The StepSq at the end was a beast! The only think I would wish is probably a better dress, I do like this black one and it's pretty enough for a show but something more regal would fulfil the whole picture.

I‘m actively mourning the gorgeous Ina Bauer we saw in the promotion video. Daniil.... why...

I mean, come on, look at the difference....

Other than that... interesting new transitions, spins are more beautiful and flexible than ever. She‘s not too used to such movements and expressions yet so I‘ll give her time to really get the feeling of that program. It looks promising as in it could help her mature and show more emotions. It will surely get even better over the course of the season. I think she looks beautiful in the dress but seeing it in action now, I‘m not too sure it‘s that fitting for a figure skating program. So, hoping Olga will make something even more beautiful for her. I definitely prefer this program to last year‘s (both of them) and think it has potential just... that Ina Bauer and that one half-spiral annoy me. I hoped to finally see real ones from Alina because I know she can hold those moves, she‘s just never been allowed to do it in a competitive program.

Definitely looking forward to seeing the program develop. I wish a couple of the moves were really held because it would be beautiful, but I do agree with esteticlove that for the most part the fast movements work with the music. There were a couple moments that felt cluttered to me, but not too many (definitely less than in the past). And there are some really great moments already as well.

She's clearly matured and you can see that in her expression. I hope that as she's more comfortable with it she can add more passion and deeper expression to it - it looks good for being so early already.

The only part I really didn't like was a couple of those running movements - they looked awkward to me. But all in all, it's a good first impression.
