2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Kamila Valieva just did quad in her LP (Muse). The program is beautiful. Breathtaking performance.

Kamila Valieva 4T, 2A, 3Lo, 3F-2T, 3Lz-3T, 3F-1Eu-3S, 3Lz

everybody go home! She just need that 3Lz3Lo other Eteri girls are throwing casually. And probably 3A as well to be very competative against Sasha and Anna.

I think I agree with the poster who said that in the first half of Kamila's program, the choreography seems too busy for the music. The music builds beautifully, but the choreography is flat-out Everything! Every! Second! from start to finish. It's not really my favorite approach. Saying that, it of course highlights one of her strengths -- her incredible endurance throughout this program.

And Kamila is of course an absolutely incredible skater! Being able to do what she did on that ice... very, very impressive. So the program succeeds at highlighting her qualities, not just the jumps but all of her skills.

You know... sometimes people might say about an outfit, "Wow, she is wearing a beautiful dress!" and, about another outfit, you might say, "She is looking very beautiful!" To me, Kamila's FP choreography does not make me like the program, but it does make me appreciate the skater.

I really liked what I saw today, what talent out of these girls!

Kamila, wow! She moved me with that program, my favorite I’ve ever seen from her and it’s only just the beginning. What a little champ, no doubt she will dominate the JGP this year, that quad looked solid (also Sergei in the background so excited!!)

I also quite enjoyed Ksenia’s skate... so fierce, everything looks way too effortless for her, I think I will be very impressed with her this season.

And Daria was my other favorite. The passion she exudes in that program is lovely. I think she will be one to impress this season. She’s had a rough season last year and has been marked as inconsistent, but from the little I saw of her the past two days she seems to be starting off on the right foot. Two clean programs (okay except for that flip, but it was an awkward take off so she couldn’t help it) and her tech seems okay to me as she had two nice lutzes!

I wish all these skaters a great season and can’t wait to see all their beautiful dresses!!

I hope Vasilieva and Tarusina heal soon and are ready for the JGP! I wonder if Vasilieva will keep her assignment or if it will be moved to a later one.

Today, my favorites were Kamila, Ksenia, and Daria. It was sad to see Anna Frolova and Maya struggle, but hopefully each will have the chance to prove themselves on the JGP.

Sinitsyna, being the dark horse, could very well prove to be the revelation of this JGP season for Russia, coming second only to Valiyeva but perhaps even equal if Kseniya upgrades to what was suggested? ....

She is 15 and small, but looks very young in her face still, making her appearance quite deceptive to the casual viewer because she is powerful.
She is one of the least well known of the girls we've seen at the Test Skates, and perhaps therefor the most eager to prove herself.
She was one of the few girls that seemed to be able to handle the pressure of expectations well.
She is from a rink with a good atmosphere and camaraderie amongst the skaters and has all the required qualities down pat, staying cool and composed under pressure the most important.

First JGP is going to be tough, after today's events I think it will be a very close call in Lake Placid where Sinitsyna and Tarakanova are up against each other for a Gold or Silver. Currently, my bet is on Sinitsyna.

I hope Kamila shut some mouths today with her free program ;)

Of course, not all of them but that's OK, otherwise we would have a branch of FanFest here. Opponents could sometimes be a source of insights about what could be improved. So far, with Kamila I am not sure that critical remarks can work like this. They are predominantly about "frantic movements", "busy program", etc. Nothing new - it has started with Yulia. Yes, Eteri's students do many more various leg movements during the program than "traditional skaters" who can set a jump for several seconds, who have a lot of two foot skating. Some people see good choreo and artistry in that - I don't.

My theory is that it would be a piece of cake for Eteri's skaters to produce this sort of skating. Alina showed recently that she can hold Ina Bauer for not just a fraction of second. They don't do it on purpose - because they think it is yesterday's figure skating. On the other hand, many others who don't have a multitude of fast-pace transitions do not do it not because of artistic reasons - they simply cannot. It's like they did not backload not because of not willing spectators' "having bathroom breaks" but because it was too difficult and risky for them. It is important that figure skating is a sport and judges seem to highly appreciate what Eteri's skater can offer.

Life is changing, generations are changing, figure skating is changing. I personally like these changes. Those who prefer to stay with the past - it's their choice.

Is it assumed that because there were 9 girls at test skates (including Tarusina) that the Fed will most likely give them each a spot? Then the 6 that can likely make it to the final will get a second? This is what they did last season, correct?

Tbh, with the talent I watched today, I could see an all Russian Final. I am a fan of Alysa, but can she actually compete with these girls, I mean each of them has the potential to be the total package?

It seems to be from the "Frida" movie soundtrack, the first part is "Alcoba Azul" by Lila Downs

ETA: This is in response to the Tarakanova music question

Frida, the Mexican movie, right?

I thought that Tarakanova's FP music nicely fits together with the SP music, allowing for a contiguous interpretation and is also sort of economical on resources.

Making my way very slowly through the programs - Kanysheva's LP goes very well with the music, but the first half is so boring. The second half livens up a bit. It's pretty music, but not special. I think she is more suited with an upbeat music/theme than somber. I loved what a ray of sunshine she was last season!

Probably for the best that she is not doing a quad, since her triples look rough right now. I hope she will be more consistent once she gets more practice in.

Does Maya Khromykh only look tall because of her built (those long limbs!) or is she actually tall?
