2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

Her skating looks slower than the koreans, so I don't understand how her componets are higher.

Maybe it's because speed is far from the only quality making up the components. "Skating skills" count as one-fifth of the components score, but speed is only one part of skating skills. Then, the other four-fifths making up components are Transitions, Performance, Composition, and Interpretation of the Music. Alysa's program rates high on those qualities.

Its probabaly because it is located in the United states.

That doesn't really rate an answer. IMO.

With Alysa, she is so consistent we rarely see her fall that’s why she is going to a big star if she maintains this consistency. Give this girl a break, who in the world has Alysa technical difficulty now. 3 triple axels and a quad lutz. Not even Rika.

I've been wondering why there's so much agitation about her. Reading the posts, I think it sounds rather like a frantic fear of competition from some folks whose favorites are Alysa's top competitors. Right now, there are 71 "thumbs down" on Alysa's SP video. That seems very much out of proportion; I think most of those people must simply be afraid of her.

I can't stop smiling when I watch her skate, and it isn't because of her nationality. It's because of the way she skates. Such joy! and such unaffected charm. Rather like Katya Gordeeva.

Actually speed is only one part of six things considered in skating skills. I’m sure her one foot skating and multidirectional skating helped out her score.

Or maybe 71 people just don't enjoy her skating the way you do. They are allowed to have different tastes than you, by the way.

Yes, thank you for helping me out with that, frida80. I didn't know how many things were considered in skating skills, but I knew it was several, and certainly not just one.

Of course people have different tastes. That isn't an issue for me ... and my taste is very often quite different from many, if not most others. Going out of their way to "dislike" a video still seems extreme. That may just be me, but it's still my opinion.

Personally, I woldn't, but I've had people like and dislike some of the little pieces of music I put up sometimes, and it's a bit wearing to think "what's the deep underlying reason they are being hurtful like this?" And on videos that I myself have 'liked', reading the comments can get decidedly aggravating for people ascribing jealousy/fear/witchy motives to each other. Sure, there may be some, but most people are simply, spontaneously clicking what they think.

Every performer in every field is fingernails on a blackboard to somebody. So some folk dislike her style, or maybe the hype, or whatever. As she gets older, especially if she does well, she'll deal with dislike as they all do.

No, Skylark is right. Alysa already has a lot of detractors that have been building up since the first time she landed a 3A in competition. It’s a bit demoralizing to read. Just look at the comments under her competition from last week.

I've been wondering why there's so much agitation about her.

It's the Talented Young Skater Phenomenon (TYSP:)). A young athlete moves up fast--without waiting his/her/their turn and without having yet had time to develop much of a fan base--and begins defeating high-level athletes with established fan bases. (At least defeating them on paper with planned elements).

Very reminiscent of the reaction to Nathan in 2015-16 and Sasha Cohen in 2000.

Often the negativity starts off at the National level. Then as the athlete becomes more competitive internationally, it generally shifts away from the National fan base (which often now incorporates more fans of said athlete & also other fans who realize said athlete can earn his/her/their own spot in major international competition) and the negativity moves more toward the international fan community as said athlete challenges those established athletes.

TBH take it as a compliment. We have seen this before like nasty things online towards the Russian girls but they are still on top.

beside its the usual suspects who make this comments so its not surprising. If Alysa ends up beating the 2 Korean girls which is very likely, expect more. Good thing youtube disable comments now.

We need more of such precise and cool posts, thanks! :agree:

Also, from my observation, Russian fans are very patriotic and protective about their girls, so they are very picky about talented newcomers from other countries, but on the other hand, when a girl is indeed very talented, they are able to admit that and even root for her to some extent. That's what I'm reading right now in their fora - pickiness, mixed with awe, especialy for Alisa tough nerves and joy of skating.
I'm quite sure they wouldn't go full psycho like some other fans back in time. ;)

It is, indeed. What possible reason would a fan ever have to dislike a skater. (Well, maybe Wolfgang Schwartz.)

I propose this rule: for every bad thing you say about someone's skating you have to say three good things.

Or just be nice and don’t say anything bad about anyone. The most hateful people are the ones who are not happy about their life. Be positive and you will be positive.

When people see you as a threat, they hate on and try to bring you down. We saw this with Mao and Yuna, Tara and Michelle, Cohen, Gold, etc... More recently, we saw this with the Russian civil war that was Evgenia versus Alina. Also, people will do anything to discredit you. For example, when Alexandra first landed her quads, people were up in flames and literally tore her and Eteri apart. This is the vicious cycle we call jealousy and hatred.

After reading some of these posts, I hope Alysa has a great LP this afternoon and brings home the title. She's so young and all she can do is take the ice and do her best. I hope she doesn't listen to any of her critics.

^^^ That's one great thing I believe Alysa has in her favor. She seems well protected, and well grounded in her family and coaching.

In addition to which, she's such a natural skater. The phrase "takes to the ice like a duck takes to water" comes to mind. And when Lynne Rutherford asked her if she felt pressure to do well here, Alysa said, "I kinda like the pressure." And like Brian Boitano noticed at Aurora games, when she skated out to the ice, she didn't have a "game face" on. She was smiling and looking like she considered competing good fun!

i don’t personally like alysa, but i wish her all the best. even if i don’t like her, she still is a talented skater, just not to my liking. i hope she medals :)

I think it is better to say that you don't personally like her style of skating than that you don't personally like her. I am sure you have nothing against her personally. Alysa's style of skating definitely does not appeal to me. (I love strong SS and a soft knee) but Alysa herself is adorable and deserving of praise for her hard work. There are far too many people (adults, sadly) who direct their dislike of the judging or choreo against young skaters. Look at the hate that Adelina received after Sochi and the hate Evgenia got for years because tech callers didn't call her flutz. Giving constructive criticism is one thing ( Alysa needs better SS and more height on her jumps..imo) but disliking a video and posting rude messages on videos is really childish behavior. I wish fans would remember these are real people with real feelings and they are all amazing talents whether their skating appeals to us or not.
