2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

In the frame where the video pauses, inviting us to scream, "Look, she's 180 degrees off!!!!!!!," it is not clear whether she is on the ice yet. It just shows a skate against a featureless white background. She could still be a tiny bit in the air, whirling at a rate of, what? 1500 degrees per second or so? As far as i can tell (my eyes are just not quick enough, even in slow motion, to make a judgement) in the very next frame she appears to be only a touch more that 90 degrees short?

Plus, the gif is not very convincing (in my opinion) about the pre-rotation on the take-off, either.

Maybe "phony" is too strong a word, but fans who make these videos have an agenda. What is phony is the accompanying declaration -- "See, it is OBVIOUS unless you are BLIND that ..." It is not obvious at all: some people see one thing, some another.

Certainly that video is not what I saw. And I wondered where it came from, as that wasn't the angle that the main camera taped during the competition. It was the (FS)dress she was wearing, but perhaps taped at another competition this year? To me it looked clean as a whistle, yes some pre-rotation, which I've gotten used to as a usual technique these days.

I saw the video the .gif is based on (NOT the gif itself) and I think Shin Amano or a strict tech panel would have given her a <. I think there is room in the discussion to say that it was UR and would have been called as such. I do think it's a concern that we went from an era where Mao Asada's 3As got < like half the time (and probably would have been called clean with the current state of calling) to this "close enough" tech calling we're seeing in the last year.

I think it's reasonable to question the consistency (or lack there of) in the technical calling. It impacts the results.

At the same time I think it's not cool to hurl insults and thumbs downs to a teenager either. Not all people who are questioning the rotation/pre-rotation of the 4Z are doing this. Again, I think it's important that we respect that there are people who have this view can do so without "hating" on Alysa.

Honestly, there are ladies who have 3Zs that are more impressive to me than Alysa's 4Z, but hey that's just me. At the same time, there's plenty I like about Alsya -- namely her spins and natural charisma that I wish would be highlighted more.

Also speaking of which, I gotta give a shoutout to Millie Murdock. I know a lot of folks will focus on her tech content, but her speed and the ease of her stroking was great to see.

Anyway my two cents. Good lucky to Gabby and Isabelle (really eager to see her!) at JGP Latvia tomorrow!

Anyway my two cents.

Your two cents are worth far more than that most of the time.

Of course, my criticisms of some fans' obsessive behavior do not extend to legitimate commentary on a skater's technique. That's fair game, regardless of his/her age.

And, El Henry, dear friend, my horror at gift-giving to strangers does not extend to traditional nominal gifts of stuffed animals or homemade cards thrown to the ice in appreciation of a skater's performance. As you say, that's a far cry from tracking down skaters to give them overly personal gifts that would raise eyebrows in a normal person. A stuffed animal thrower shouldn't be lumped in with those types of people.

Gabriella Izzo did a nice long interview with In The Loop podcast; she seems a very sweet girl. Interesting fact, she didn’t begin seriously skating until about 10 years old!
Unfortunately, she didn’t mention anything about learning new difficult jumps, or say that she was aiming for top 5 at her jgp events.
Even though I don’t think that Gabriella will make the top 5 this weekend in Riga, I’m still rooting for her.

It was a really nice interview! She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and I hope she does well at her JGP!

Not bad skate from Gabriella and Isabelle! they both land 3-3 which is good thing, but they lost a bit on other things like steps and spins level/GOE. Wishing both good luck in their free skate!

Wow
Go Gracie!
Even if she never goes for a 3A in competition, her attempting them shows (to me atleast) that she's gaining confidence.

I’d rather she’s do a low level competition than earnestly training one of the hardest jumps on the world that only nine ladies have managed to land in international competition.

I agree. I'd rather see her have a great skate "anywhere" before she goes for a 3A, a jump she does not need to be successful at US Nationals.

Well, we don't know just how seriously she's training it from just one tiny video clip.
I think it's great that her confidence is high enough to attempt them, I do also hope she focuses on the pressure of actually competing again first.
Maybe Mirai and her finally nailing that 3A has inspired Gracie to just go for broke in what is probably her last chance to reboot her skating career.
If she goes down that route, honestly what has she got to lose? Not much, really. I think in Gracie's mind the worst has already happened.

I do not think we will see Gracie actually attempt a 3A in competition. It's probably just for fun and/or to give her confidence. It should not be taken seriously by fans, IMO.

Gabrielle Izzo looked fabulous. Her PCS seemed very low. Her performance was very mature - that of a senior lady. That was not reflected in her performance/interpretation/choreography marks, unfortunately.

Isabelle is promising. This is my first time seeing her. She still has a lot of developing to do on her performance and skating skills, as well as the levels on her non-jump elements.

Both US ladies at a JGP went out there and landed everything though, which is something rare. Hope to see them looking solid in the LP as well.

Danggg Gabbie has shown now: 3ltz-3loop, 3f-3loop, and 3f-3t.. the latter two clean, the first combo with a < ! Impressive!

Isabelle is so cute and looks like a newbie in a good way :). Awesome air position and clean 3-3.

Good luck in lp girls. Fight for those levels

I'm just happy to see her doing strong axels of any type again. The 2A has been a weaker jump for her in the past than it should have been, given its relative difficulty.

It's not a new jump for her. She worked on it early on her career. Before she fractured her foot as I recall. Maybe they decided they don't want to compete this year at all so you might need something to work on.

Who knows?

It's easy for us to sit behind our screens and say what we think is best for Gracie but she will do what she feels is best for her.
Lots of people didn't think going to Rostelecom Cup was a good idea but she did and she obviously did what she felt she needed to do. She wasn't ready and I think she needed to see that for herself and it seems to have given her a renewed sense of motivation and desire to come back as strong as she can. I hope she succeeds, whichever way she chooses to do it

Training bigger jumps can help you stabilize your 'easier' jumps, among other things. I don't think it's a bad idea

I also wonder if mentally it helps her because training the 3a was what she was training at her peak. So working on these jumps helps her to come back stronger than before. And honestly, no she doesn’t have the body type that most of the ladies (or men) have that have successfully landed quads, but she was jump a high, strong impressive jumper at her peak. She might be able to do it. And what s beauty those jumps could be.
