2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Spins are problematic for her, because of her past back problems, but Mishin's camp neglects skating skills and choreo for sure.

And that is why they won't win against Tutberidze skaters with clean skates

And I understand back injury would prevent her from doing certain spin positions but not all

I think it’s a reasonable decision considering her injury and how stunning the Angel short is anyway, and she didn’t quite get to skate a full season with it. Twilight the story is terrible but the movie soundtrack is actually quite good so I think the FP will be nice. It can still be a good contrast with her Angel short.

Yeah that's fair. The Angel short is truly gorgeous and I'm not gonna complain about seeing it more ;) Just saw some clips of her new FS at the test skates and I'm glad they kept that segment of music by Muse. I thought they were gonna go all lyrical for the FS as well (because of the snippet they showed to that TV channel at Novogorsk) but I'm happy that Alyona gets to skate to music her likes after all

I think if Anna misses the quad and Liza lands 3 3As across both programs along with everything else Liza will win. Anna will get the nod in PCS but they will keep Liza close enough, same as they keep Sasha close to Alyona in PCS even though there is no comparison.

If they‘re going to keep Liza close in PCS to Anna, I‘m going to riot. Liza‘s jumps are 100 times better in quality (even though Anna clearly worked on hers, they have better height now. Still, basic technique is what it is) but there‘s not one category of PCS where Anna doesn‘t beat Liza by a mile. Anna doesn‘t have the best skating skills but Liza doesn‘t either. And Anna was fierce and strong today and performed very well. Her transitions were on point and it looked like she was allowed to hold a few positions a bit longer. Also, everyone knows she‘s the most musical of the 4A. I don‘t know about the composition of her program because my stream was laggy but still...

Liza‘s jumps are perfect (what was that layout today though) but if I had to choose, I‘d watch Anna over her anytime. Especially today. I know judging is what it is and I‘m ranting... but even if Anna misses the quad and Liza does her jumps perfectly like today... they can‘t keep them on the same level in PCS. That would be a crime.

Well you better be prepared to riot then because you know it’s going to happen. Especially if Anna has a significant mistake (which will be considered a break in the program) even if it’s on a quad.. People talk about Liza’s spins but the llast I checked they were still giving her Level 4s with an average of like 2-3 GOE. Anna isn’t going to get all 5s. If she gets 3-4 will this be enough to really make any kind of difference? Probably not the kind that people think. It’s the same thing with the PCS.

I do think they will give them both roughly the same GOE on their clean jumps, even though Liza’s are higher so in some ways it evens out. This is just how the judging is. Dumbed down and doesn’t account for the nuances.

It's time for skate review!

Evgenia: program has a lot of potential and she performs it with great maturity. However, so many mistakes are unforgivable in such field. They should get rid of the second lutz as well, because her edge doesn't seem to improve during actual skates. Hope these were just accidents and she'll show a better performance next week.

Elizaveta: program is very similar to last year. But the lack of difficult transitions is still apparent. Lots of choreography with arms, it will look good on TV but not while watching live. Jumps were top notch of course. The layout was bit weird. No sal and I wonder what combo is missing.

Sofia: style also similar to what she did last year. She could use more transtions and better skating skills though. Jumps seemed to require lots of effort. But Sonya did have a good interpeatation and performed quite well.

Stanislava: another Moulin Rouge. Compared to SP, the choreo was worse. There were moments where music reached its peak but she was doing simple gliding or crossovers. It looks that she got more consistent so good for her. But the fight for medals in major comps will be tough.

Alina: what an improvement from last year! She looked very involved and happy while skating. Daniil finally let her hold positions longer. Entries to jumps were insane. The only complaints are her posture during crossovers and that long Ina Bauer we never got to see :( But overall a very strong and interesting program, she is not a two season wonder for sure.

Anna: too bad about quad. I hope she will have a better success rate this season. I didn't think that was that 'complicated' dress she was supposed to wear until the change happened! Some jumps still lack height, but she can compensate with good air position and entries. Skating skills need some work but performing and expressions certainly didn't cause her any trouble.

Alexandra: wow wow wow. 3 clean quads. She could beat basically all Russian men with that content. Good skating skills, but timing was a bit off(?). Overall, program has an interesting concept, she will definitely become audience's favorite.

Aliona: my most anticipated program. Jumps are superb, she will get +4s +5s for them. Spins and all components are great as well, she will be given high scores for these too. Music change may not seem logical, but it's a nice transtion from an innocent girl to a badass vampire.

Anna's dress change was so cool. But I wonder how she can get away with this in competition? Here she changed the dress during a spin, but doing that in competition might jeopardize the points for that spin? Aren't the rules more strict regarding spins this year?

I really appreciate that the Eteri girls have been working on their spins. Anna and Alyona have new features now so they get to do two combo spins and a flying camel, which is essentially the maximum of what they can get on spin BV in the free skate (Alina and Sasha were already there on BV last season, that's why I'm not mentioning that.) Anna also seems a lot better with centering than she was last year.

I wonder if Liza could work on her spins, maybe her back isn't flexible but she could always work on the features that Sasha does to bring up her BV (illusions between spins, jumps between spins etc). I know it's not a massive difference but Liza isn't just losing to Anna in spin GOE, she's also losing in spin BV. I think there's exactly one point between their spin BV (assuming both get all level 4s). Of course that isn't huge but if they're close, it could come down to that one point.

Stole this partial comment from another thread:
So far 4A performances and outshined everyone else today, confident, mature and beautiful:)

And again Gleikhengauz and Tutberidze staged completely different programs for their top skaters, programs they enjoy to perform, programs that show only their best side.
Small changes and little touches here and there will still be made over the whole season as the skaters get used to skating in various ice conditions, slow and fast ice etc until the best mix is found.
Also, these skaters are trained to think on their feet, making necessary changes themselves to make up for earlier errors.

I for one find nothing wrong or boring with them, but perhaps as a Khrustalian I am prejudiced be default?

The costumes might make quite a considerable difference in the appreciation, but as usual I expect nothing but the best from the seamstresses that work with Olga Ryabenko.
Having the opportunity to dress these skaters is a honour in itself. One sees in the young skaters a few copies of the competition dresses the Khrustalniy Amazing Aces have worn over the years.

Last year Alina had a huge pression on her shoulders because she was Eteri’s only russian senior but this year I can see how she was enjoying it. It’s good that they are a group now among the seniors.

Don't have time to comment on everyone, but want to drop my opinion that Alena was my favorite for the free. That song Eyes on Fire(??) is really beautiful! You can tell she likes what she is skating to and keeps the energy through the whole program, all the different music pieces speak to her versitality and alllow the program to be entertaining throughout. Very impressed with her as always!

I’m surprised that Alina is doing 2 big combos in the first half of her program.

I thought that last year she jumped her 3Lutz-3Lo and 3Lutz-3T in the first half as well. The "new" thing is switching the 3Lutz-3T to 2A-3T and ofc the new transitions in and out of the jumps.

Last year she had 3Lz+3T in the first half and the loop combo in the second. I don‘t mind the new decision, if it helps her skate cleanly, I think it‘s a good thing. The 3Lo in the second half was often UR last season but the two she did over her two programs at test skates were both perfect. I think it‘s a good idea.

And she came back to 2a+3t not 3lz+3t as last year

Like I said last year she had to take more risk because she was the only senior and some people were not convinced about her being the reigning olympic champion but now as the reigning world champion, she can relax and enjoy + it’s only a test maybe she will put more difficulties later.
