2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I hope that Daria is able to hold it together for the free so she can qualify for the final!! We all know that she can skate clean, it's whether she can keep her nerves together

Was there any visible sign of nerves in both Anna and Dar’ya yesterday?
Not in my eyes, both girls seemed concentrated and composed, business like even.
Dar’ya has her first “big stage” competition nerves out of the way since Riga. I was surprised over Anna’s composure, but perhaps she is only under pressure from herself?

Both their trainers did their jobs well in setting up their athletes.

Cup of St. P., top 5:

1. Tuktamysheva 229.12
2. Sakhanovich 193.09
3. Gubanova 188.57
4. Gulyakova 184.36
5. Deyneko (spelling?) 182.11
Thank you for the top 5. I am pleased Nastya G1 at least medaled after being 5th after the SP.

Great skate by Liza. Her 3A seems super solid. But I still think she leaves a lot of points on the table. No 3S and just one 3F. Perhaps she will change that later on in the season?

Serafima looks great. I am looking forward to see her in SC and RusNats.

Gubanova was good. Maybe she doesn't have the stamina yet but I expect her to up her game coming RC.

But I am worried about Talalaykina. This will not do to get her into RusNats. Her solid 3Lz3T combo from last year just isn't there anymore.

Who is that girl ending in 5th place?

Gubanova was solid today. not at the level of the Russian Cup final in February. But she's starting over again for the second year in a row with a new coach and a new choreographer. That's asking a lot from heror any skater who changes coaches every year.

I also hope Nastya is through puberty at 16. My stepdaughter was about 17 when she was completely done with puberty. Nastya is almost 17 so I hope she is through puberty and can settle into her new figure and get comfortable skating again and have an excellent year. My hopes for her this year are to get well over 200 points at some point and push Stasya and maybe even Sofia if she falls back. The top 7 seem set with 4A plus Liza plus Zhenya and Sofia makes it really a top 7 that will be hard for anybody to break into.

Unteal depth with the Russian ladies. it truly is both incredible to see and something to be proud of and also something to be frustrated by if you want your favorites to move up who are not in the top 7. Not a lot of wiggle room there people. ;)

Serafima looks pretty good after not even qualifying for Nationals last year.

One of the most fascinating seasons we're ever going to have with the ladies will be this season. One of the main things for me will be how will Alina handle being number one in the world with her new training mates joining the seniors. Ask for Alina and puberty I think she's done with puberty. She has grown a significant amount since the Olympics and added some weight and muscle mass but thank God her growth has not hurt her skating from what I can see. She just needs to have a fun year and enjoy her work and travel and trainings and events and do the best she can. She is already GOAT material having won everything as a junior and senior by she 16. Amazing.

Also how will Zhenya fare in season 2 under Orser? I expect her be to significantly better than last season but the Russian competition alone will be tougher than last season so trying to figure out where she might be placing in events is impossible because of the Russian depth and worldwide depth.

Yes, and she was thoroughly trashed in the chat. People really aren't forgiving her.

Is her dress still with the seamstress, since it appears she competed in training gear? It's probably difficult to commission a new dress for $$$$ (4 figure sum) when you are just re-starting your career and not quite in shape yet.
Underlying skating skills were clearly evident in her first outing of the season, but competitive shape has not yet been achieved. IMO
What? What were they trashing Nastya about? She's trying to rebuild her career and doesn't exactly need to be Adelinad online.

Yes Edwin those dresses are so expensive.

Hoping Nastya is better at the Russian Cup stage 2 and can push 200 points. It's hard to believe but starting this season she's like the number 9, 10 or 11 Russian lady. Talk about depth! Yikes!

Viktoriya Safonova is warming up for her free skate, hors de concours in the Sambo-70 Birthday Celebration competition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voyZ-lwGpsi

Bolero first full orchestra, then only percussion, building up to a full orchestra finale. For such a tall skater, she moves slowly and gracefully, but the spins in her jumps are fast and tightly wrapped.

133.09 for a total of 200.64. Well done :-)

Who all competed at this event? Anyone of note other than Safonova?

Nobody or real stature in international ladies singles. The start list is here: https://www.sportvokrug.ru/r/competition/6044/Стартовый ПП.pdf
Protocols will be at https://sportvokrug.ru/sports/fs/event/6044/news/ most likely after competition has concluded.

Yegor Murashyov will also compete hors de concours, he is the only Master of Sports boy, so he is in the same flight with the Master girls.

The season has started for real, the pre-novices and novices have lots of competitions to establish their rank.

Tomorrow we'll be able to see Sof'ya Titova (2009, Plyushchenko's Angels) and Dzhastina Uylian (2008, Megasport), Dzhastina (Justina) participated in this season's Ice Age, Kids.

Thank you! Glad to hear Safonova is doing well. Hopefully we can see her make her debut for Belarus at Golden Spin so she can earn the Euros minimums. Seems like she is eligible after November and her Fskate bio already says Belarus so I don’t anticipate any hold ups for her.

At least at test skates, Alina looked way more relaxed, and kind of: "i'm still doing my best, but I already achieved and proved, and I'm just enjoying it now"

I thought that this thread was supposed to be about figure skating, in particular RUSSIAN LADIES figure skating:scratch3:

It should be but because of Alysa and Kamila craziness it is not! ;) Some often mention Alysa in relations to Kamila. In a way its understandable.

I love Daria’s skating so much. I get people’s complaints about the mature music choices, but I think it really highlights her expressiveness and beautiful skating. So I am a fan of both programs. I’m not sure anyone else her age could pull off that music like she does.

Really, really hoping she can deliver a clean free skate. If she wins, she is guaranteed final.

Even a silver will get Dasha successfully in the final. But yes, I would love it if she won! Her skating is mature and beautiful, and she's so underrated.

Well, I was mainly referring to the conversation about world hunger. I am fine if Alysa gets mentioned in here, but if people are concerned about her eating habits then they should talk about it in the US ladies thread or her fan fest.

Agreed GVO.

Not eating or weighing enough will always be a concern in figure skating and gymnastics because the less you weigh the better chance you have to succeed. That's the cruel truth of it. A full figured woman like Kaetlyn Osmond who probably weighed 125 lb when she won Worlds 2 years ago is a thing of the past. A 125 lb woman s not winning major title again in this sport when all the brilliant and gutsy 75 and 85 and 95 lb girls out there doing incredible things on ice.

Bringing things back on topic -- looks like JGPF outlook is starting to take shape:
Already qualified -- Kamila Valieva, Alysa Liu
On track to qualify -- Lee Hae In (needs at least 3rd), Daria Usacheva (needs win to be safe, 2nd might do depending on Hae In's, Frolova's & Sinitsyna's outcomes), Kseniia Sinitsyna (needs at least 2nd)
Remaining contenders -- Anna Frolova (needs at least 2-2), Viktoria Vasilieva (if Frolova has a lower scoring 3-2 placement)
Outside shot -- Park Yeon-jeong (needs 2-2 but unlikely to have higher scoring ability than Frolova & Sinitsyna)

Final tally likely to be 4 Russians... quite safe for 3 at least...
Prior to the last 2 seasons, the JGPF used to be 3 Russians and 3 Japanese typically, so IMO what's new is less of the decline of Russian dominance as the emergence of competitive contenders from other countries. Which is great for diversity!

I think the biggest news is a weak junior group from Japan this season. The second news is the rise of Korean juniors. Alysa Liu is so far just an outlier - there is no trend. As for the "Russian dominance" we have Kamila and a group of skaters capable of scoring in 190-200 range. So, it's business as usual.

Fly weight athletes, so we are watching a flea circus, LOL

There is probably a critical mass in female athletes capable of repeatedly and reliably landing triksels and quads without immediate risk of overload injury. Critical mass as a function of power to weight ratio, which could be statistically evaluated.

I hope is not the trend. I really do not want to see slew of borderline anorectic girls with two years career. 75 lb (34 kg) is a child's weight, not a healthy weight for a grown up woman.

I like how body shaming apparently works only one way. But calling thin people anorexic is totally normal.
34 kg can be a normal weight for a petite but adult woman, who is perfectly healthy. Needless to say there are a lot of women who are naturally thin, and might have a lower bmi as a result of their natural body type being that way.
No need to standardize who should be weighting what, that’s so inappropriate.

I would call her an outlier right now, but she has definitely started a trend of making US juniors and novices actually try to start bringing their A-game and get 3-3's and big ticket elements...whether they're successful or not is another story.

These girls still need consistency and skating skills but Sarah Jung, who is skating in a JGP right now, usually jumps 3Lz-3T in the SP and she has jumped 3A's and is working on a 4S. Of course she only did a 3-2 in the short which cost her. Also there's another girl named Mia Kalin who has done 3Lz+3T+Eu+3S in practice and has been trying to get a 3A.

Nowhere near the level of Russian girls still, but looking at the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 and the embarrassing lows those were (Ting Cui slightly redeemed the 2017-2018 season...but not by much) this season and what we're hoping to come is a massive improvement and what seems to be the beginning of a better future.

Sorry this was off-topic.

Anyway, glad to see Gubanova got third and did "meh." After the whole summer I was really worried for her. An upper 180's score is not great all things considered, but when you think about the chaotic past few months she's had it's really an amazing result.

Since we are in Russian ladies thread... hardly ever are Slavic women naturally this teeny weeny.

35 kilogram is normal weight in girls at 11 YEARS OLD.

35 kilogram is healthy weight if you are less than 140 cm tall. Which is not usual in European women.

That is not "body shaming", those are facts.
