Melissa and Denis in COI

Sasha can skate circles around Kimmie. It doesnt matter that Kimmie has a world gold medal because as we all know medals don't always show who is more talented; they show who is more competitive. And I dont think the fact that Kimmie has better jumps matters either. Figure skating....not ice jumping.

Sasha is more graceful, artistic, has better musicality, better choreographed programs, heck she even has better costumes. The only thing Kimmie has on Sasha is jumps and nerves. And really how well executed are Kimmie's jumps anyway? JMHO.

Well I'd say that Kimmie beating Sasha to win the World Gold does in fact make her a better skater than Sasha. JMHO of course, but thats how I see it. And can Sasha really skate circles around Kimmie? I don't think so. Kimmie's edges, for one, are much stronger than Sasha's, which to me is very important. Sasha wouldn't know any given edge if it walked up and bit her on the behind, nor would she know how to control the edge. She has to take half a million steps in her footwork sequences because she carries no speed throughout her steps. All Sasha has over Kimmie is her flexibility but honestly, I'll take a decent spiral position that is done on a nice edge with continuous speed over one with extreme hyper-extension and shallow edges and little speed any day.

Oh, and about the costumes, at least Kimmie's don't all have the trademark neckline plunging past the naval that Sasha's have. Even if the costumes are otherwise OK, the necklines ALWAYS ruin her costumes. For someone so interested in fashion you'd think she'd realize that it is not a flattering cut on her.

To me, it's apples and oranges. At COI the skaters' job is to entertain the audience. Sasha is very good at it.
They're both fruits, comparable in taste and "color." Even at different points in their "ripeness."
;)

I have to say that I really enjoyed Kimmie's program at COI on Saturday. The costume that she had was different from the one she wore at the exhibition at Worlds and it was lovely.

I am not really a huge fan of either Kimmie or Sasha but I think that the difference is simple as far as COI goes. Sasha is used to playing to an audience and Kimmie isn't. That's easy to see when you see them in the show. I don't know enough about basic skating skills to comment on that but I think Kimmie simply needs to work on reaching out to the audience more.

Sasha can skate circles around Kimmie. I don't know who came up with the Sasha's doesn't have edges. My God.
dancindiva03,according to your logic, Tara and Sarah are better skaters than Michelle, because they are Olympic Champions.. I will accept that.

Let's agree to disagree. Sasha and Kimmie skating side by side, are like David and Goliath.

I can see hte arguement of Sasha being a lot better than Kimmie, but comparing them to David and Goliath is absurd. Have you actually read the story? Even if you do think Sasha is far superior, Kimmie is still one of the very best skaters in the world.

Now, if my skating was compared to Sasha's or Kimmie's, then that would be David and Goliath.

ITA with anyone who thinks Sasha is miles and miles above Kimmie but I'm not sure I understand the David & Goliath comparison.

Is Sasha the stripling who "slays" (outskates) the giant (World Champ) Kimmie?
(But who would call Kimmie a giant at this point in her career? and Sasha may have been a stripling compared to Kwan, but not Kimmie.)

Or is Sasha the giant (many medals over many years, most famous US skater right now) compared to young Kimmie? (But how is a World Champ a stripling, and considering what David did to Goliath, I don't understand this comparison coming from someone who admires Sasha.)

What I am trying to say is that it is not fair for an apple and an orange to compete in an apple contest to see which is the better tasting apple.

This whole discussion was started by Georgia's post #66 in which she said that Sasha was a better COI exhibition skater. Well, duh! A fairer comparison would be Sasha against Irina Gregorian (Sasha, 5.8; Irina 6.0).

In a contest where you get 10.0 points for a triple Lutz/triple toe combo and another 10.5 points for a tripel flip/triple loop -- well, that's an orange contest.

not to sound annoyed (Because I never get that way ;)) but how does a Melissa and Denis thread end up a Kimmie and Sasha war?

Sorry, just trying to look at it from a different POV. I see COI as a "fruit contest" for there are so many different strengths exhibited during a COI show, I thought more of, watching apples and then the next number is oranges, etc... I guess. ;)

Good point. And, indeed, that is what's cool and entertaining about COI -- something for everyone. :agree:

Because Michelle retired, so every thread can't turn into a Sasha-Michelle war any more. ;)

Sorry guys. After a year away from skating, I got some tickets from a very nice person in the skating world, to the Show.
I enjoy it, and some skaters reminded me why I had loved skating in the first place.
I just got exited after one year away from the sport, that a small sparkle is still there for me. I invested many years of my life, and thousands of dollars, both as a parent of a skater, and later as a spectator, to this sport. I really wanted it to work for me.
Sorry Sasha, Dennis and Melissa made me happy.
Also participating in this convertation, also reminds me why in the future, I should keep my opinion to myself.
I am not saying Kimmie is not a nice skater. She is the best we have right now.
IMHO, Kimmie is not near our past Champions.
Yes, I will admit the David and Goliath comparison is too strong.
I used it to make my point.

I'm sort of jumping in in the middle of this conversation - so sorry if this is a repeat - but, there is one way that the Sasha - Kimmie comparison makes a lot of sense in relation to COI and that is because in the finale, some of the female skaters are 'paired' and Sasha and Kimmie skate together (and for some reason, doing spirals - which frankly just makes Kimmie look bad; and Shizuka and Surya are paired). I can't see why they didn't pair Sasha and Shizuka, and Kimmie and Surya; with the first doing spirals and Ina's and the second doing jumps.

No, no! Discussions like this are what it's all about! Thanks for posting your thoughts and impressions.

Impressions from Columbus:

-They should rename it "Albinoni On Ice Starring Christina Aguilera"
-Heather and I were disturbed over Surya's costume in the opening. It looked like someone killed Big Bird and pasted his feathers on her bum.
-Ryan Bradley's number was fun. I was singing along and since we were lucky enough to score some front row seats that no one was sitting in, he noticed it and mentioned it to me backstage.
-I'm happy to report that Surya was not wearing dead Muppets in her solo number.
-Johnny's number is gorgeous! I hope he can find the joy he's showing on tour for the upcoming season.
-Tanith needs more clothes but at least she's back to shorts and not her underwear. I wasn't a fan of the hooker boot covers though.
-I don't know how Dan Hollander skates in all those costumes one on top of another.
-Rudy still rocks. Loved his number and he actually looked great in the sequin catsuit.
-I lurves me some Victor but Shae and the chair make a great team. She is amazing live. She doesn't have jumps but when you can move like that, who needs 'em?
-At the end of Evan's number I wanted to stand up and say "I'm sorry Evan but you're just not right for our band INXS"
-Fallen Angels is amazing! I am so glad that I got to see it. Denis has a real future in choreography if this is any indication of what he can do.
-Pang and Tong are much more impressive live than on TV. Heather and I were happy to see that the headband made an appearance for their number but we wuz robbed of it backstage. :
-Marina Anissina nearly fell out of her dress right in front of us when Gwendal lifted her. Brings new meaning to the term "Big Red" if you know what I mean.
-Sarah Kawahara needs to watch a few more Bond movies because the last time I checked, Pink Panther was not in any of them.
-There is too much going on in the closing to even comment on. It was better than last year's hot mess of a finale though IMHO.
-We were lucky enough to be backstage after the show and everyone we talked to was very nice. Johnny was an absolute doll as was Ryan Bradley. I also have to say that while I am still not an Evan fan, he does get points for being nice to the duckling when she dropped her sharpie over the barrier. My biggest thrill that I finally got to meet Shae after being a fan since 1993.

I think that's everything. Heather...feel free to add anything that I missed. All in all, it was a great show. I was pleasantly surprised.
