2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

My wife and I are currently at Bolshoi theater watching DQ ballet. It means that tonight I shall rewatch Alina's Olympic performances. I wish her to win this week.

One thing is that Alina indeed was Kitri.

Welcome to the Elite League of Trikselistas, Sof'ya Samodelkina. And well done to #TeamDavydov for preparing the excellent young skater :-)

Plyushchenko's Angels' own Sof'ya Titova (age 10) is also learning a triksel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW8fsA-0J1o but crumbled when landing it.

I don't wanna discuss shoulda-coulda-woulda about Zhenya because it really leads nowhere, there are no conclusions that can be extracted. I also don't think it's very appropriate to compare her scores now with the scores until the Olympics, starting with the fact that the scoring system changed. So imo the only way we could compare them is to either convert these now to that scoring system, or those from the past to today's scoring system.
I think the biggest problem for her right now is she herself, though it also seems that the signs of regression she shows outweigh the signs of improvement (in competition, unfortunately for her). And yes, I think there are both improvements and regression. So on that note I invite the critics to open their eyes and see the improvements, and her fans to open their eyes and see the regression too.
I watched all practices from Skate Canada, and essentially she only botched her 2A in the last SP runthrough. Everything's running very smoothly in practice, and I simply cannot understand why it doesn't translate to competition, and unfortunately it seems like the team can't figure it out either.
One thing that cannot be denied is that she's tried a lot of new things ever since moving to Orser, a lot of which are definitely out of her comfort zone compared to what she was trying with Eteri. While learning new skills is cool, it's also a problem in that she really needs the consistency. That's why I'm not a fan of her new team for changing the layout frequently last year, and this year kinda too. You gotta work with your strengths. I remember Eteri saying that she had to work a lot more, than others, and that after just 1 day off she'd need some time to get back to how the week ended. And so that needs to be addressed.
Overall, I'm not convinced the issues are because she's not working hard enough. She's definitely a hard worker. I don't know what it is, but I do know that I'll continue supporting her, because her shining moments far outweigh the dark and gloomy days. This marvellousness is enough for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy1ZqmkdSNI

Thank you Vadevska for posting the link to Evgenias SC Exibition. I tend not to watch exibitions since I rarely enjoy them but that was realy lovely and I would never have watched it had you not posted it.

Cool! Just checked Bolshoi website and today's Kitri is Ekaterina Krysanova?

The ladies free skate at Skate Canada was the 31st highest rating show in Russia for the week and was the highest rated sporting event of the week. It beat out 3 different football/soccer matches for Champions/Europa/Russian Premier League. 3 out of the top 10 rated sport events were figure skating. It's not really easy to compare ratings from year to year for various reasons(live vs taped, different times of the day) but last year the highest rated Skate Canada broadcast was the ladies short program and it was the 71st highest rated show and two football matches were higher rated.

No figure skating show cracked the top 100 last week, but I think they were all shown on tape delay(I think) and aired on pretty down hours... but the top 2 sports programs of the week were figure skating and they best out a Euro football qualifier and a Boxing title match between a Russian and Ukrainian. 4 out of the top 10 rated sport events were figure skating. I saw no mention of skate america last year.

I'm not sure if these numbers catch streaming numbers which seems to be a popular option to watch.

Look, I don't know - we are not frequent ballet spectators these days going mostly to opera, but she was good same as her partner. I also liked a lot 2 of 3 lady dancers in tutus with solo performances towards the end of the second part. The third one who was visibly older had difficult time finding her balance.

What also stunned me is how much there is in common between ballet and figure skating.

I wish I could see the video but my YouTube said NBC blocked it.

Thank you for that detailed explanation about Zhenya before and after Eteri. It makes sense to me. For the life of me I don't know what yesterday was about and who did what or started something about Eteri and Evgenia. But at this point it's like a cat chasing its tail. 😉 I look at it this way Evgenia was better better on the ice before she left Eteri that is obviously undeniable. But she's also healthier and happier living and training in Canada that is also undeniable because Zhenya herself has said numerous times how happy she is in Canada. it was not an easy move for her and it was a very bold move that most of us dare I say would not have made.

As long as Evgenia is smiling then we're all happy. Hopefully her mental toughness or whatever it is she needs returns to her so she can show the better skating skills everyone says she has now. She often has outstanding practices and then cannot bring that to the full competition. Zhenya used to be able to do that on a dime so it has to be frustrating the heck out of her.

Did you happen to see Sevenard and Rodkin?

Look I am very sorry - I don't know the names and I did not get the program. Bazil was quite short - I think not taller than 170 or 5'8

Again comparing with figure skating ballet dancers can hold beautiful positions. But they just jumped "doubles". And Kitri's fuete although impressive was not perfectly centered.I mean, she moved a little bit. One more thing is that lifts in pairs look more difficult. I think I watch too much figure skating...

My main concern with comparing practice to competition is that, at least in the practices I watched, she never skates anything close to the full program.
So, in my head, it is not comparable, because if you take breaks to rest and concentrate, jumps and stuff get much easier. I feel that comparing practice and competition is only fair when a full or nearly full runthrough is done.

Do you think Zhenya drove these numbers? I'm guessing so, which means a great deal for her future and commercial endorsements.

I'm guessing it was Sasha with her world record skate?

It would be wonderful to think that. But Zhenya has a huge, dedicated, loyal fan base. Everywhere she goes the cheers are twice as loud as those for other skaters. It seems to me that she is sort of the 'michelle kwan' of Russia. I'm not sure the casual viewer knows who Sasha is yet, whereas Zhenya is more of a household name. At least this is what I'm guessing. Basically that Zhenya is the celebrity draw for figure skating in Russia.
