2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I am so glad that Alina dropped her previous gala program. That lady had to be happy that Alina used parts of her choreo rather than starting that ridiculous outcry. Who would care about it now?

Using my 500th here as a special wish for Alina to take the greatest enjoyment and pleasure in her own skating this weekend, to be boosted by the love and awe and respect of her millions of supporters the world over, particularly the little children who adore her and the aspiring skaters who are inspired by her story from Izhevsk to the World and Olympic throne, and to deliver a performance that strikes gold in her heart

Watched Alina's new gala program for the third time, what an amazing program that is

I'm sure you'll like this one too: Alina and Daniil talk about the new Ex programme

Alina: ...It's a great experience for me, I've never skated such a programme, it's very personal. It's dedicated to Lyudmila Borisovna Shalashova, our beloved choreographer, she helped me during the Olympics, she became part of my family, it was tragedy for me too...
Daniil Markovich came at practice and told me about the new program, the story behind it, it's a very touching story, and it's very important for me to show all these emotions, well, at least to try...

Daniil: ...I wanted everyone to understand this program. It's a story about life, about nature, and how we come into this world, take our first look, first steps. How we can see all its beauty, love, and also experience pain and disappointment. Alina shows us all this and at the end when she completes the journey new life is born...

Daniil: ...I'm very grateful that I know such a wonderful skater that can express all what I want to tell people...

Alina: ...I'm going to skate for her, I'll try to create this image on ice, I'll do my best...

There are probably issues of jetlag and lack of sleep. And Trusova's practices were Gawd Awful. I was expecting a train wreck, but she pulled it together. Even if she leaves the 3A out, there is very little chance she would not be top 3-so in a way this GP is easier than last week.

Agreed.

Is it too early to start playing the "who's in and who's out" Grand Prix finals game?

Here is my prediction. The 4 A's will win everything they enter, losing only to each other. The last two skaters need a 2nd and a 3rd. Rika Kihira should get third easily at NHK and if she is fully healthy, skating at home she can aspire to higher. That brings it down to who gets second at Cup of China, Young You or Elizaveta Tuktamysheva for the final spot.

I am very stressed for Alyona!!! (not because of her practices....)

Since Anna and Sasha have won each of their GP events, I think the pressure is on for her to do the same. However, she's the only one who has to compete against one of her training mates, and not just any training mate - the reigning World and Olympic Champion. So I think she is facing more pressure than either of them. Anna's competition at Skate America was pretty easy, and Sasha had to compete against Rika, but after Japan Open, it was pretty clear that she was in a league of her own, IMO. Whereas Alyona and Alina are more evenly matched.

This GP field isn't very stacked, but between the top 2, it will likely be very, very close, and I think if Alyona doesn't beat Alina here, it could impact the rest of her season.

Russian teen star Zagitova one to watch at Grand Prix of France

...Another superstar jumps off the pages of the women's entry list and that is none other than Olympic champion Alina Zagitova. It was only two years ago that we first saw Zagitova as she exploded on the scene, taking all titles in her wake up to and including the Olympic Games.

World junior champion in 2017, Olympic champion in 2018 and world champion in 2019 are all titles that would be impressive enough in their own right; for Zagitova they are just another opportunity to demonstrate her prowess on the ice.

In Grenoble though, there are another couple of young women who will be looking to take their chances against the Olympic champion. Fellow Russian Alena Kostornaia, who won the junior Grand Prix final last season, and national Japanese champion Kaori Sakamoto, who is looking to improve on her fourth-place finish at Skate America two weeks ago.

Yes the pairing of Alena/Alina is perhaps not the best. In hindsight I think it would have been better if they had paired Alena with Liza (battle of the trixles), then Anna with Zhenya, and finally Sasha with Alina. The only risk with this is that Alina might not win any of her GPs, but she would surely make the GPF anyway.

No, the most rational decision would be to pair Sasha with Anna (young quadsters) and Alina with Zhenya (pcs queens without quads and 3A). But there would be too big "human cost" to it.

I love both Alina and Alena, so this competition is hard for me because I want them both to win (I love Alena a little bit more but Alina is an extremely close second). I just hope that both of them have skates that they are proud of no matter their placements. I am sure that it is hard for Alina and Alena to compete against each other because they want to maintain a good friendship, but also be good competitors and get the gold. I hope whichever of the 4A that doesn’t make the world team knows that they are loved by so many fans and that even though they didn’t make the team they are still some of the best, if not the best, ladies skaters in the world.
