2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Oh dear.

I'd be surprised at Alina to be that petty, deleting Darya off her Instagram, doesn't sound like Alina to me.

I think Alina has learned a lot of hard lessons about people since winning the Olympics. Especially about 'friends' and people she used to look up to and consider role models. I also think she has learned some very valuable lessons about the need for self protection from people whose intentions are 'good' but nothing they say or do is in your best interest.

In order to enjoy her skating and stay in a positive frame of mind this season it will help to eliminate anything that diminishes those things. From what I can tell she is very careful with her social media. She only follows 309 IG accounts.

There is nothing 'petty' about removing things from your life that don't add anything positive to it. Or that just plain annoy you.

Vanessa Gusmeroli is the Worlds Bronze medalist from 1997 (she robbed Butyrskaya imo :gaah:). I remember she was a Tech Specialist at a competition last year where there were lots of debate too, but I can't remember what competition that was.

Edit: It was Worlds.

I did not understand the Gusmeroli love at those Worlds in 1997. She was more a SP skater, because she lacked finesse and skating skills but could jump reasonably well and her spins were interesting. That LP was a mess, the canned applause, the messiness. Czako was better IMO. Only thing right about that competition was Tara going 1/1/2 to win the Gold.

I think it's unethical either way. She clearly sets herself apart from us "every day fans who do not see things". Then she says that Alina has issues with lutz edge. Then she implies that before they could hide it like they did it with her flip, etc., etc.

Alina does have issues with her Lutz, but I absolutely think it is not good sportsmanship for another skater to point anything like that out. Especially not in an interview with someone like Rodina.
Panenkova isn't a former skater who now does commentary, like Tara Lipinski for example. She's an active (though currently injured?) competitor of the same country and to top it off, a former Eteri student.

Yes I understand that now

I read the initial article and not understanding exactly what happened I was a little confused. The article, to me, didn't seem very sympathetic to Alina either

Maria will probably not attend Russian Nationals. She will make an announcement soon that could possibly be a retirement announcement according to IFS magazine

It is not clear if that is their prediction or if it came from Maria herself.

I hope if she does retire that she still participates in a few shows, she's still a lovely skater.

For all those who have been saying she's done and to hang up her skates. You might have got your wish.

Ah...those were the days when Slutskaya, Butyrskaya and Markova ruled the Russian figure skating ladies. Only a few could stop them...I seem to recall someone named Kwan.:)

lol so much unverified information in this tweet. It basically references some low quality article where a journalist speculates about Sotskova's retirement. The journalists basically twists Maria's words about her making an announcement about her participation in Rus Nat into her making an announecemtn about her retirement.

Interesting and well said. at this point I'm not sure she would be annoyed or frustrated by what Dasha said or any of our other contemporaries. But Alina is only human so who knows.

We have to wait for the official statement, I am not surprised though...it is kinda expected.

Previously she's always maintained she wanted to continue. That might have changed now after ending up last at her GP.

Or she might want to take some time out, focus on her studies and maybe return.

Or maybe the article is just straight up speculating.

I'm pretty sure she doesn't give a rats behind about what Dasha thinks of her lutz edge.

Is there anyone in Russian figure skating circles who doesn't know about the unkind words that Rodina has used about Alina? It's actually more than unkind words - it's borderline threats of harm. I get that no one seems to take those words or those threats very seriously. Many skaters have been interviewed by Rodina even after she said those things.

I find it pathetic to be so desperate for attention that you will sit for an on camera interview with the person who let it be known to the public that she wanted to slash Alina's face, but people will do what they want. But it might be taking it just a step too far to discuss your opinion of Alina's skating flaws with the person who publicly celebrated Alina's disastrous skate in Milan on social media. And considering the timing? Yeah, she's getting unfollowed.

Forget being 'only human', Alina is smart to cut those people out of her circle on whatever level she feels is necessary. When someone shows you who they are - believe them and don't make them show you twice. I will never understand why people think Alina should maintain a facade of social media friendship with anyone who considers Rodina a 'friend' or a 'fan'. Those people are clearly prioritizing Rodina's feelings, or their relationship with her, over Alina's feelings and their relationship with Alina. Why ignore a clear message?!

This would be a great time for Russia to start building up "pro" or "adult" competitions/circuit... So many gems right now.

can't agree more

She's such a strong person to be able to handle all of this craziness and rise above it with dignity and honor.

For a context what Rodina does: she holds these regular livestreams, there's a whole compilation of what she said live during those and wrote on her social media about Alina, which includes among other insults racial slurs (because Alina is ethnically tatar), comparisons with (how do I put it...) women doing escort services (you get what I mean) and much more.

So it's just so strange to me anyone goes to talk with her. She's not quite okay in her head.
Besides, she's well known to look for drama and stir things up as much as she can.
She tried to create drama about Liza Tuktamysheva too, saying that Liza in fact wasn't sick during nationals and just 'pretended' to have pnemonia to skip nationals to get a free pass to Euros and Worlds (cause that somehow worked ?!)

For a moment I forgot how the Like button toggles on & off and instinctively gave your post an enormous flurry of Likes. Totally well spoken!!
I am certain every illwisher cut out adds to Alina's peace of mind.

I don't even want to watch the interview, but I'm worried Daria will fall into the trap.

Rodina it's just very strange and has been exposed with some of her heinous comments about Alina. It really makes no sense why so many Russian girls can't wait to talk to Rodina.

Do I demonstrate my complete ignorance by asking who "Rodina" is? I never heard that name before, I know there used to be a super-continent called Rodina billions of years ago, but I don't know anybody with this name in the context of figure skating. Sounds close to Rodnina, who was one of the best pairs skaters in history, but I don't think that's the person the discussion is about.
Can I ask for a favor of explaining who that person is?

This would be a great time for Russia to start building up "pro" or "adult" competitions/circuit... So many gems right now.

Honestly a "pro" league seems like a great idea. In fact, it could even extend to countries beyond Russia that also have depth, like Japan. Russia and Japan definitely have the audience for it. I mean, they were able to fill up an arena for a Test Skates and for a JGP, so I'm pretty sure people would go see a pro event. They could make it 6.0 again - that way some of the older stars could still participate without needing the difficult jumps needed for Olympic competition, and still do well and make some money (Yulia? Adelina? I'm sure people would go to see them). Russian nationals is one of the most exciting competitions, so why not make more of that. Someone needs to get on it.

In other news, Ksenia Sinitsyna is competing at the Volvo Open apparently? If she were going to introduce a 3A before the JGP Final, now would be the time. We'll see.
