2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Coaches should really put a rule in place with all of their skaters that if they give an interview about another active skater from the same country that its grounds for immediate expulsion.

I really wish Sambo skaters would not make any comment regarding their weight, especially needing to lose weight - the internet vultures shall pounce

I hope that's a lost in translation issue; Zagitova is usually pretty classy in her interviews but that comment comes off as pretty classless to call her training mates childish because they desire to win. Especially when the critics are pretty vocal about the 'young guns' that come in a win their first season largely pre-puberty and they get knocked as being little girls.

Good point about the weight and not commenting on it. No one would want to see alina lose 6 pounds.

I think she's saying she was like 3A is just a few months ago. But Alina has won everything so she can afford to step back and say she doesn't necessarily have to be on the podium. I get it from her point of view.

Her weight comment reminded me of Artur Dmitriev Sr talking about his son, Artur Dmitriev Jr, only being able to land the quad axel when he was at a certain weight. If he was one half a kilogram over this specific weight he couldn't land it. He wasn't implying his son was over-weight or even that he needed to lose weight. He was just stating a fact that the quad axel was only possible for his son at this certain weight.

That is the vibe I got from Alina's statement. She can't jump quads without significant risk of injury unless she weighs less. I noticed that she didn't say that she wanted to lose those kgs, or that she was trying to lose weight. Just stating her belief that it isn't safe to jump quads at her present weight. I don't know if the information she has been given is accurate or not.

I agree that any female skater from Sambo 70 mentioning weight = internet pounce mode.

Also, why do some people insist in calling the triple axel a "triksel"? That's more letters than the properly shortened "trixel". It makes more sense to shorten it with the right letters...

Maybe because it's a made-up word? Without an exact 'correct spelling'? I first saw 3A spelled 'triksel' and wondered why, since TRI(ple)+(a)XEL shortens better to 'trixel'. To me the 'correct spelling' doesn't even matter. What matters is that trixels get both performed and judged correctly. I've certainly been enjoying watching the attempts!

All true.

I have my doubts Alina would like to lose 6 lbs for quads or anything else. Especially since she has won everything already.

It is hard being tall, but she was able to do jumps before at her current height. She got 12 < or << calls last weekend. That has to be a record; she only fully rotated one jump, a 2T in her LP.

It's hard to believe how Mashas skills just disintegrated. But you can see this coming from a mile away.

I would not be so harsh with her. Yes, she named their attitude childish but immediately explained that it is what her own one was just a while ago. I think the only point she was trying to make is that she is no longer medal hungry unlike "young guns". Whether the desire to win as the main driver is the same as "the childish attitude" is open to discussion. For me she did not belittle her team mates.

She didn’t exactly say „childish“ in a sense of „immaturity“ or „infantilism“. Childish has more of a negative connotation I think. She more like said „child-like“, „that of a child“, and it didn’t sound to have any negative meaning to me.

For me, I think she meant "child-like" instead of "childish". Would make much more sense in the context

"child-like", "childish" - sorry, guys. I used to have 640 on TOEFL and 700 on GMAT. But these linguistic nuances seem to be higher than my grade.

I don't think its petty to unfollow Darya, I mean IIRC Darya reposted something on her story with Rodina, someone who apparently has actively gone after Alina and said some hurtful things. If Alina doesn't want to see that on her feed, she doesn't have to. In fact, good for her for getting rid of that, you shouldn't be forced to look at someone who's said horrible things about you on your Instagram feed. That being said, we have no idea why she actually unfollowed her, as she's unfollowed people for no reason before. Even people she seems to still be friends with.

Rodina basically threathened Zagitova a number of times (statements such as "i would have punched her in the face" and similar things). Rodina called Zagitova, then 16 years old, "prostitute", and other nice words.

Sometimes I actually feel like making a little collection of selected posts from her, because non russians here sometimes don't seem to realise just how awful and disgusting this person is, and how disgusting any association with this person is. That unfollowing anyone who willingly interacted with Rodina is the least any decent human being could do.

I wish these skaters had some sort of (social) media training. It seems that some of them don't really consider long-time consequences of saying things to interviewers / posting things on social media (which is understandable since for the most part they're teens). Giving interviews to shady people or joking in a live stream may taint their image and hinder their careers even if there's no ill intent on the part of the skaters. In this day and age this is something that parents and coaches should take seriously.

Does anyone have the actual translation? I can’t imagine she would insult her teammates. By now she has the media experience and knows chose her words wisely. She’s a pro with the media now. I feel bad for her teammates to be dragged into this debate though. All they’re doing is winning.

I agree with your assessment.Alina was just making a comparison to where she used to be mentally only a few months ago.

But its sometimes funny the way the Russian girls speak. They are very direct and they have no filter. Nastya G is proof of that. In an interview last summer with rodina Nastya was talking about Anna and Sasha doing quads only because they are so small and children. And recently Nastya said that Sasha is a great kid. A sixteen-year-old calling a fifteen-year-old a kid. Lol.

You must understand that every athlete who has reached a high level has ambition. Otherwise, they just don’t get there. And the worst thing for many when their career rush passes or dreams fall apart is to be forgotten. That is why, in my opinion, they agree to such interviews. Also, personal human qualities and upbringing play a role here. As long as there is a request in society for gossip and negativity (and this is, it is noticeable even here, when insignificant words are discussed by many with interest), this will not stop.

Alina did not mean anything harsh with just condom just explaining how she was and has now changed.

Exactly. What’s the point to lose weigh and risking injuries? Alina is still competitive without 3A or quads to stay on the national team and to medal. She already won all the titles.

she knows it won't be enough to stay on the podium forever. she is thinking long term for probably the next 2-3 years, at least until the Olympics. she knows there are girls with quads coming up the ranks even outside of 3A, and she needs to be prepared.
