2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Evgenia didn't have an entirely jump focused program. Her choreo is much better, much better interpretation and her SS are definitely better than Zagitova with her choppy crossovers and hunched back

It‘s amazing how you only stumble into this thread every now and then to say something negative about Alina.

That's what I said too, send 3 skaters to euros and than the a others to worlds, that would be amazing but probably will not be happening

This would be incredibly unfair to the top 3, not amazing at all. Alina, Evgenia, and Liza when they were the best in the country all had opportunities to go to both EC and WC because they earned it. If the 3 new seniors are top 3, as they have been so far on the GPs, they should get the same opportunity. The competition in the Russian ladies is crazy right now, it's unfortunate that some very talented ladies will miss out, but that doesn't mean spots should be taken from the most deserve just so everyone can get something. At nationals, there will be 3 more deserving than the others, even if it's just by half a point. That's the name of the sport, and they will still be more deserving nonetheless.

Figure skating is a competitive sport, and participation/consolation prizes are not a thing when you're talking about major international competitions.

Hey, I never said she would do it, that’s almost impossible. I just said I think it would be good for her, considering she’s probably not getting full attention at Sambo70 since there are so many senior ladies there, and I think she would be treated like a priority by Rafael. But she doesn’t seem like the kind of person that would leave, I think her relationship with her country, with her family and with her coaches (mainly Daniil) are very important for her. And this thought didn’t come now, after seeing her SP, I’ve been thinking about it since the beginning of the season. Sometimes, I like to play a game in my head that I can suggest everything to all the skaters. Like music for the programs, choreography, costumes, and even coaches. In my head, my programa are the best ever [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Alina will retire competitively at some point in the future with Eteri as her coach. she is very loyal to this coach because a few years ago the coach was going to have Alina leave her team in Moscow and go back home. then at the last minute the coach changed her mind and the rest is history. Great history. If Eteri follow through on Alina leaving her team and who knows what Alina would have become. Now she became GOAT material at age 16. Thanks to Eteri.

I don't think that Alina should leave Eteri, but I also don't think she should stay just because Eteri was nice to her. Alina should do what's best for Alina. If she feels in that staying with Eteri is best for her, she should stay, not because she feels she owes Eteri. And if, in the future, she feels that leaving would be best for her, she should leave.

It’s sad how quick Alyona went from “angel Russian with amazing skating” to “overscored Russian who deserves UR falls on everything and ! calls on flips that are CLEARLY inside” that’s how quick some fans will change after Alyona (deservingly) beats their favs. Rika was underscored today but that doesn’t mean Alyona is a bad skater or that she didn’t deserve to win.

Inna Goncharenko's interview

- Skaters aren't as good as machines. You cannot jump quads all the year around.
Someone better to skip EC if planning to go to WC.

(my own thoughts excactly)

- Nice to have TeamTutberidze but this only school cannot stay for the whole country. It's counterproductive. Sooner or later the serenity will rest on laurels.

I tried to see that supposed 3A UR and I don't. Maybe the rotation isn't so ideal but her entry, air position, height and distance are the best a lady could possibly do. No one in the ladies going to land it like Hanyu does with complete rotation in the air.

Agree. It was definitely within the quarter mark. The second one was almost forward - the panel in France would have probably given her a << but it was a close call either way.

The most rotated one she has done in competition was in the SP here at NHK. That was clean no doubt.

Her 3A seems to be improving from competition to competition - the axis looks much more stable now vs some of the attempts in Finland and France, especially all the ones we saw in practice. I hope it will improve in competition as she gets more comfortable with it.

Hoping Aliona can add her name to the short list of ladies who have landed 3 clean 3A in a competition.

People keep saying Rika is better than the Eteri girls, but Rika doesn't have the "it factor" or the "jenesequa" that Alena, Valieva & Scherbakova has. She doesn't have the same level of musicality nor charisma on ice. Rika fans should know that what sets Alena, Anna & Kamila apart is their artistry and presence on ice, more so than jumps or techniques.

Kostornaias PCS rose almost a point, but not enough
her PCS almost tied to Kihira is a joke. Anyways I think with every clean skate her PCS can rise.
Same. I agree Kostornaia should get at least 10 points more in PCS than Rika.

Uhoh... That's not gonna be popular!

I do hope that Russian ladies don't end up being all Eteri all the time, but if they're the best what can you do?

I thought Sofia was much better today. The jumps were better and she had better energy. She fought for the entire program.

I thought this too, and I certainly didn't expect her to win. It's just her scores are so low now, without any (as far as I can tell) huge drop in performance.

Masha S I can understand, she's falling, Sofia S is not, she's almost the same as she was before, and suddenly she's not good enough, no explanation, nothing.

And when I think about what the Russian press must be saying about her, they're probably laughing at her, my heart just sinks.

If they can tear apart their best skaters like Alina and Zhenya Med what would they say about Sofia who's never even been to the Olympics or on the World's podium?

The difference for Sofia last season compared to most of the ladies field was that she was getting credit for full rotations. At COC and NHK this season, especially in the LP, she was not. (Fairly common. With a little growth, her jumps--which just skimmed above the ice last year--are harder to get around). As far as performance goes, her PCS in the short at NHK and COC were higher than at SA last season. I don't think it is the PCS that is costing Samodurova. (Though PCS bubbles tend to inflate as you rise in the ranks and deflate as you drop). It is the GOE.

Note: Having said all that, I personally am sick of Roxanne and do find it really painful to sit through. It is quite possible the judges do too because Sofia's PCS has gone down in the LP.

I think that this season with new good skaters who have appeared Sofia has been pushed from Russia's #3 to at most #7 which certainly changes the way judges look at her. She can't expect a big score with limited GOE due to her jump height and lower PCS due to worse programs (IMO) than last year. Last year her extreme consistency was sometimes even enough to beat unstable Zagitova and Medvedeva, while Liza was ill, this year they seem to have passed most of their problems so situation for Sonya is pretty difficult.

Then what's the explanation for the GOE then? It's pretty low of the ISU to tell a skater one season your jumps are fine and then go "Oh wait jokes on you, they aren't, good luck changing your technique now, sucker." We all know how well that worked for Mao.

As for Roxanne, if that's the case it's even worse, the judges are not there to critique music choices they're there to judge how a skater skates to that music. If they can't do that, then they can kindly see themselves out the door.
