2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

I am so impressed with Alysa . That girl must have nerves of steel. Last year at Nationals she was a little girl but now she is a talented young lady. Still only 14 years old but she has a maturity beyond her years. She will be one force to be reckoned with if she can keep this up into the senior level. But what I am most impressed with is how she seems to enjoy every moment she is out there skating.

Apparently Alysa has been working with Carolina Kostner since April of this year either live or using video chat and since her biggest weakness is her speed and skating skills who better to learn from. I already see some improvements in just the last few months with her speed and flow out of her jumps. Alysa knows what she needs to improve on and doesn't take anything for granted. What a great mentor to learn from i expect with such a teacher that Alysa will continue to improve.

Credit should be going to Lori Nichol too, since Alysa has spent a fair amount of time working with her. Some of the first noticeable improvements in Alysa's speed and skating skills came after she started visiting Lori.

Was Alysa planning 3axel-3toe and then a second 3axel in the short? Is there a reason she can't do a 3axel as a solo jump? Seems strange to do what she did rather than 3axel, 3lutz-3toe, and 3loop. But I'm probably missing something.

I think the rules don't permit a triple axel in juniors so she can only do one as part of a combo!

I think she still has to do the mandatory 2A.

I am not sure about the loop thought but they all did single loops so I assume that's mandatory too?

The solo jump must be a loop and the solo axel must be a double.

Seems very...random! I can understand the 2A but why the loop? Are they trying to instill good loops?

I think they rotate the requirement. This year it is the triple loop. I think the idea is to force junior skaters eventually to learn everything.

Ahh thanks! That's a pretty good idea actually! I was just so puzzled why Alysa was hell bent on doing a loop instead of a lutz (especially when she doesn't have any lutz problems) until I watched everyone and realised they were all doing loops!

Ok so I've heard a lot of ppl say that Alysa is slow. She's been skating since she was 5 or so. So in the last 9 yrs if she hasn't been able to achieve the optimum speed what will be the turning point? Just more practice? Seriously asking since I have no clue how it works.

I have another question too!

Can Alysa turn senior as soon as she is 15 or does she need to be 15 before the start of the new season?

A skater can turn senior if they were 15 by July 1st of that season. So she doesn't turn senior the day she turns 15, actually she'll be almost 16 when she is officially considered a senior, and 16 before she competes her first senior event.

A skater needs to turn 15 by June 30th to compete as a senior internationally in the next season. Since, Alysa's birthday is 8/8/05, she cannot turn senior until the 2021-2022 season, i.e. the Olympic season.

Thanks guys!

Would have been nice for her to get one senior season as practice but what will be will be I suppose!

Yeah, its a shame because had she been born a month or two earlier she would've gotten that. But at least she gets senior national practice, which is something. And she seems to be able to deal with pressure really well so I'm not too worried :).

Also, it didn't hurt Zagitova to be a first year senior when she won the Olympics!

It also would have been nice because her + Mariah/Bradie would have probably really helped get 3 spots for US at Olympics. (No guarantee...but Alysa landing her triple axels and quad lutzes would surely place her in the top 4 or 5 and then Bradie/Mariah would need to be top 8 or 9 which would mean they just need to beat one of the Japanese/Russian ladies and/or a wildcard like Lil Bet...which is certainly possible if they’re clean.)

Oh no. At Golden spin of Zagreb, Starr’s total score was only 161. Ouch. What happened?
I wish she could switch coaches. She needs help with her jumps, her choreography.

I'd be cautious about reading too much into Starr's results here. Presumably she's competing here to earn the JWC TES minimum, which she did.

Exactly. Changing from a senior to junior program throws everyone off. She made some weird mistakes on some elements she can do easily, but skates pretty good considering she just skating a different layout just two weeks ago in Japan.
