2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

It is nice to see how the Juniors in the US have stepped it up the last few years. Refreshing competition with lots of promise.

i agree! i'm excited for the talent in the top 6 finishers, lots of promise for all of them. i wonder how selection for junior worlds will fare...it will be Alysa and who else? i think any pair of the top 3 finishers in juniors will go, they really can't go wrong.

are any of them eligible for 2022?

edit: i am forgetting about Starr and Gabriella. if Gabriella skates well, i think she will nab a spot. i don't really see the point in sending Starr if she is behind Gabriella here...i don't think she could finish better than any other options. if it were me, i would rather send others to get more international experience under their belts.

Why no scoring box in the video coverage of US Nationals Juniors? Will it be seen in Seniors?

Because it’s juniors. And most likely for seniors. Although for what we pay you’d think we could get a score box for Juniors.

Isabeau did 7 triples cleanly, all level 4 on all elements, and all positive GOE :dbana: She's debuting as a junior internationally next season, right?

Yes. She really is a Sasha clone for someone that young she's a natural performer and i don't worry about her landing her jumps either she's so solid. A bit more speed and power but she's someone to watch for the future. After all Alysa needs someone her age to help take over US Ladies. LOL

I think the US ladies deserve some praise, they are looking really good. IMO after Russian nationals, US nationals is the next best nationals of the season for ladies singles. Personally, I think Mariah and Bradie are looking stronger than most of the Japanese ladies this season. Alysa is bringing the added technical difficulty (component wise she still needs some work) and represents real promise of a technical competitor to the Russian seniors in a few year. I think the US is getting its strength back in ladies singles. Karen and Amber also looked great. I usually am not moved by Amber's performances, but her SP moved me and she seemed like a different skater.

My only regret is that we have recently begun the quad/3A era, whereas not long ago Mariah and Bradie would have been real contenders, the math doesn't work out well now against 3A and maybe Rika.

The 3 Russians and Kihira are far ahead of any American obviously. Although its been a rough season for the other Japanese skaters, Higuchi , Sakamoto and Miyahara are all better than Tennell if they are in form.

a few thoughts on the ladies SP:

-Bradie was fantastic. She should have a much larger lead
-Alysa was way over marked. Her 3A, while rotated, wasn't clean on the landing (so that takes away her advantage) and her PCS should be nowhere near the other top ladies. Also her slowness was especially noticeable when compared to the other ladies who finished in the top 5
-Mariah again with a freak fall on the footwork which was reminiscent of the 2018 free skate. Still the jumps and everything else were great
-Amber Glenn was amazing but once again robbed in the SP for the second year running. Hopefully she finally puts together a clean free
-nice to see Karen going clean

I would have ranked it:
1. Bradie
2. Amber
3. Mariah
4. Karen
5. Alysa

but that's just me :confused2:

Its sad to see Gracie and Emily didnt do well in SP. But from 8-17 place is only 9 point apart so its anyone game. Some skaters in top 8 also not the most consistent when it comes to FP like Chen, Glenn, Andrews.... (but they do have more PCS advantage) basically anyone outside top 3 lol.

Does anyone have a link to the ladies' short program? I have tried to find it in youtube but I can't find other videos other than Mariah Bell and Alyssa Liu.

Mariah and Amber were the highlights for me. Bradie has the jumps and has improved, but if Mariah didn’t fall an that footwork (darn it!) I would’ve had her in 1st. Alysa I would’ve had in 4th.
It was also great seeing Amber’s reaction to Mariah’s fall, although kind of odd for the camera to go show it. She seemed genuinely like she was cheering on Bell.
They all appear to be nice girls, good sportsmanship
And Gracie. I could tell by her face she was nervous. She did well. Like most I am just so happy to have her back. What a great role model for all skaters at all stages of their career. She was nailing those 3/3’s in practice all week. I hope she’ll continue and improve. So proud of this young lady. Absolute courage!!

Alysa’s speed has actually improved and her growth is very distinct. However, her jumps apart from the 3F were very muscled and she was probably so focused on speed and not getting unders that she made herself nervous. You can tell that she goes into her jumps with less speed than in practices. Adjusting your speed really makes your timing go off so I’m glad that it’s not because of some inconsistency.

Bradie... wow. After suffering from a fall on her arm and having it get infected, I wondered how she would fare. However, she proved me wrong and had one of her career best Short programs. Amber and Mariah KILLED it and showed up like nobody’s business. Had Mariah not fallen, she would’ve been ahead of Alysa and scored between 76-77.

Best of luck to everyone in the Free.

Bradie is impressive as always. I started the season loving her short best but now I'm finding myself really looking forward to her long program. She's a joy to watch. Effortless skating.

I'm very pleased with how Alysa is tracking. I think it was good for her to be nervous, good for her to feel the pressure of being defending champ and stumbling a bit. It's how she recovers that matters. The jumps and skating skills will keep improving no doubt but the important thing is that her first senior year will likely be there Olympics so I'm all for her dealing with different scenarios and pressure right now. It can only help in the end. She sure is handling it superbly and doesn't seem to dwell or meltdown.

this was literally me after Mariah fell: :gaah: :tantrum:

that was THE BEST i have ever seen her skate until she made that silly mistake. she was so in character through the whole thing, the jumps were solid, the spins beautiful, she was sassier and more fierce than i've ever seen her. whyyyyyyyyyy mariah whyyyyyyyy

MAriah's Fall definitely made me think of Ashley at Worlds in 2016 when she fell after her long. But still MAriah was so fierce and sassy and so much personality and technically so solid. It was my favorite performance of the night.

Absolute same. On the bright side, she'll never make that mistake again... I hope.
