Sarah was NOT fat in the photo. Someone posted that Todd grimaced when he held her? Maybe TODD needs to lift some more weights then and not be seen as such a little waif boy. Seriously, if we're going to harp on one for being fat/HEALTHY.....then why not focus on the other being too skinny/STARVING?

I might sound defensive, But Sarah was not fat. She is healthy. No need to worry about Sasha getting fat, we've all heard the inside stories on that. And really, I don't know why people feel the need to be so mean about the skaters.

I was very proud of Yagudin and the other Russians' attitude toward Sarah. They didn't judge her like her US counterpart. This is amazing considering the non-ending gossip about Russian men and their desire to only socialize with size 0, while having contempt for other sizes.

I also think it might help to distinguish between a photo or costume wherein someone looks fat, as opposed to actually being overweight. I can't find a link right now, but one costume during Sarah's SOI stint had her in a red dress that was "feathery" at the hips -- and, in that costume Sarah did look fat -- which may have given rise to gossip about Sarah's weight (instead of gossip about the costume designer's sobriety)

In SOI we have a very small cast, 11-12 people - a very tiny circle. But we are lucky because the Americans are afraid of us. On our bus, they only put Lena, Anton and me, all Russians - although the bus is designed for 8 people. The second bus is full. Sarah Hughes moved to us because she was not treated very well on the other bus. Sarah is a very good person, but she gained some weight. They were rebelling against her: "This is a serious business! Did you come here to take a rest?" She got tired of those talks and she moved to us - we are people who prefer to discuss Anton's restaurant in Peter, or where and which apartments I bought, or Sarah's school. We talk about everything.

In the same interview with the Russian press Alexei goes on to say,

Americans are literally living this tour. They talk about figure skating, they get on the bus and discuss the show, they constantly practice - and still skate no better than us. They don't get it how can this be: we are doing nothing, but everything is fine. I didn't practice much at all, I was just coming out for the show, because the situation with my hip was not what I wanted it to be. With Anton, it depends whether he practices or not. Also, the show is designed in a way that I can warm up when I skate in the opening. So, we skip the practice but we land everything on the show. Others practice all day, but still miss something here and there. Naturally, they envy us. Sometimes they complain about us to the managers. It's hard to skate the same routine over and over again with the same arrogant smile, and sometimes me and Anton improvise a bit. The immediate complains follow - we don't go with the choreography...

I have heard this before, about SOI being all business. In fact, Scott Hamilton says in his book Landing It that Debbi Thomas had a hard time fitting in with the cast. Scott had to take her aside and say, look, you may be out here just for something to fool around with before you go on to medical school, but for us, we have to bring our best every night or we lose our livelihood.

IIRC a tearful scene followed where Thomas said, no, it's not that, I just feel like a fifth wheel, no one has taken the trouble to be my friend, etc.

Tara said basically the same thing. At COI she was everyone's little sister. When she moved on to SOI all of a sudden they expected a measure of mature professionalism that she didn't really know how to give. IIRC her mother said once that Kurt Browning was the only one who really took Tara under his wing and tried to make her feel comfortable.

Coming back to Sasha, I think she might be in for an unhappy time if she is not fully propared to make a commitment to the tour. This means putting her acting career on the back burner and setting aside thoughts of returning to competition.

If she is willing to do that for the next five years, I don't see any reason why she can't be the next Kristi.

Well, there will certainly be no lifting issues with Sasha - what is she - about 95 pounds?

Looking forward to seeing her horse movie that comes out soon - it sounds like she has a fairly large speaking role in it compared to her previous cameos. It would be great to see a skater who really could cross over into a film career.

IMO, Yagudin's comments about Americans and the show are telling me he is sorry the USSR no longer exists. I think he expected that the Americans would worship him as they do in Russia.

Not getting the glamor he expected in the US, plus his boredom with the show preys on his mind. He obviously knows nothing about rehearsals the way he brags about how he doesn't need them. Ugh. Real show people rehearse not just for themselves but for the entire company. His behaviour is not Team Work.

I would suggest he make Auverback's show his gift of presence. I wonder if he would be able to skip rehearsals in that show?

There was apparently a big pre-screening for SAG members in Newport Beach (not far from Sasha's home) last spring. Word on the web is that it's a pleasant, but inconsequential G-rated film in the tradition of "National Velvet" and "My Friend Flicka." It'll briefly be in theatres next month, but will probably be on the Family channel by Christmas. ​

wow, totally disagree-- that's an embarassment. And I'm no skinny-chaser, I understand there is a wide range of normal. But she's beyond the range there, definitely. (even by "general population" standards)

just because American weight has been skewing upward for a long time, doesn't mean the "normal range" should skew up with it. Normal range is meant to represent health, not some societal "median".

Sarah clearly let herself go. Compare her to Emily, who is also naturally larger-sized, but has none of that heaviness in her face, knees,etc.
