Since the other thread has totally turned into a Kwan discussion, here's a new one for Mirai.

Impressions written in blogs (1)

From "Nekusuto"'s (Nekusuto=Next) comment on "Oyaji's Eyes" blog:
http://blog.livedoor.jp/oyajinome051.../50647656.html

"Mirai Nagasu did in fact make a "shocking debut". Mao's great, but so is Mirai. Her music for this exhibition was "Don't stop me now" by Queen. She didn't get enough on the groove of the music but showed tremendous speediness. Her gliding speed as well as her spins are very fast, and smooth change of edges. No impression of specific tricks in her spirals."

"Her spins were sensational. Doing a position from a Beilmann then pulling the free leg toward the body is what other skaters do as well, but in Mirai's case it's a complete flexiblility as if nothing can't be done. Beilmann itself is done with astonishing flexibility, and the silhouette is slim like a champagne bottle. And what's more, her head is stably spinning in high speed as if fixed in the center bottom of this "bottle", a position which virtually has exceeded the original Beilmann."

"I was so shocked that I forgot to distinguish each of her jumps. I think she cleanly landed triples of high level, but I shouldn't write anything I'm not sure of. Excuse me for that. Her posture in the air has a good axis just like her spins, and rotates compactly. I didn't feel the jumps to have height, but showed clean landings with lots of composure. Her Axel was double but there seemed indeed nothing wrong in her trying for 3A,"

"Her straight line steps were rather monotonous, and the edgework was not refined enough...? well that's MO. So speaking only of her step sequence, it still may be on the junior level."

"Her expressions while performing were very calm. I felt that she was not the type like Emily who ups her impressions by showing appeals to the audience, but the type who relies on the quality of her own performance. Nevertheless, she's a competitor who doesn't forget to do favors for the fans, like letting them take pictures and giving autographs, which she did to some fans including children after the finale."

From "Morningdew 21"'s comment on her "Shizuka Arakawa Update" blog:
http://morningdew.exblog.jp/
(Morningdew 21, or "Lady K" is known for being always cool, calm, and collected.)

"Mirai Nagasu (skates to Don't Stop Me Now by Queen)"
"She has speed! Her skating, spins, change of positions, everything has speed. Her spins and spirals are beautiful. I saw her perform live on the first day of the show, and it seemed that those who thought "Mirai is the MVP today (with the surprise counted in)" were certainly not few. If you had watched through to the end of the second half this day, you can't be definite as to say that she performed the best; however I recognized anew that she is a fascinating skater whose performance reflects all the good points of her elders and rivals."

"I deeply felt that she realy captures the sound(music) when she skates, and then on, I became conscious of how the other skaters would "capture the music" till the end of the show. Needless to say but it's an absolutely indispensable element to be a top skater to show excellence in capturing the music IMO, so (in this aspect as well) I really look forward to seeing her career from now on."

"She didn't show much smiles nor much 'attempts to make appeals'; I sort of wonder if it's because she's after all Japanese that she makes her overall impression light and easy in doing anything on ice; that's something we favor and are accustomed to, but I wonder how the American spectators will take it in the coming days."

Would anyone like to translate/summarize the clips from Mirai's (and Mao's) press conference in Japan? http://youtube.com/watch?v=D31lS3rur8E
(also includes clips from Mirai's "Don't Stop Me Now" exhibition in Japan deeply arched Ina Bauer, layback to "headless" Biellmann spin with head back, 3flip, 3lutz, 2axel, etc.)

The Lake Placid Junior grand Prix event will be a big test. Mirai should be favored to run away with the competition. We will be able to see how she handles the situation of being in the spotlight.

Thank you for that link! Mirai is adorable and seems so gracious for her age. She seemed to be so wowed to be with Mao.

IMO, Mirai can do anything Caroline Zhang can...AND has better jumps. But we shall see! Such young talents.

...some of my thoughts
:)

As much as I adore Mirai, I seem to love Caroline more. I really don't know why I do, but perhaps, it is because I sense a greater lyrical quality in Caroline than in Mirai and stronger line, however, that would probably be because of the difference in music selection. Also, I really LOVE Caroline's layback and spiral (even though she drops her back slightly lower than Mirai). I was comparing Cohen's and Zhang's laybacks, in some photographs, and thought both were of equal quality. Furthermore, I have noticed that some of Mirai's jumps have been downgraded (at golden west last year, I believe, and LA open), but I'm sure she will be able to fix them because the quality of her jumping is sooo great. In regard to Caroline's jumps, I actually don't think they are that bad. of course, the entry is questionable, but the revolutions are very tight and fast (like Cohen's ). With all of the practice that Caroline puts into her skating, I hope that she will fix the problem. Finally, after watching some of Mirai's performance at "The Ice," she really reminds me of Shizuka Arakawa (with her y spiral and layback), but she is certainly is developing a style all her own.

All I can say is, I cannot wait until the season starts!

I saw a commercial about the NFL the other day that said-- "wanna talk about how absence makes the heart grow fonder? talk to a fan in the summer..."

The same can be said for skating fans.

Wow!

Yuka Sato doesn't look any older than the day she won worlds! What is her secret?!

The triple loop looked fully rotated to me. The three turns preceding the loop give it the impression of her turning beforehand. The double loop was also fully rotated--however, it gets no height or distance. Then again, that loop jump is strange in that like the axel, it requires strong thighs and arm muscles to get you up there.

I wish she, like all the other female skaters who choose to use the back outside edge spiral would work on their position. They all look like...well, I won't describe it here. Her ena bauer is beautiful, but she needs to finish that move, and all of her moves off. She comes out of it abruptly.

I think Mirai is on her way to great things. It's a privilege to watch her--even on youtube.

I just realized that this Asian invasion that everyone is speaking of is nothing new. We've had an Asian or Asian-descent WC for since 1989!

1989 - Ito; 1991-92 - Yamaguchi; 1994 - Sato; 1995 - Chen; 1996 - Kwan; 1998 - Kwan; 2000-01 - Kwan; 2003 - Kwan; 2004 - Arakawa; 2007 - Ando

So, in the last 18 years, 13 of the world champions have been part of this "Asian Invasion."

IMO, Mirai and Caroline are two of the most promising figure skaters in the Sport today.

I do not think they have yet reached a personal style. I can never see that in Junior Skaters. It takes a while and then one has to separate what they contribute to the program and what the choreographer did.
