yeah I think it’s time we can dispel this myth that Plushenko is so consumed with ice shows that he won’t have any time to devote to these incredibly high level athletes that he had chosen to take on. I believe he said at the beginning that he planned to start the academy but would not be able to coach full time himself for a few more years. Until then he would have other coaches such as Volkov work with the skaters and that’s exactly what happened. It seems to me that he is thinking the Olympics is less than 2 years away, now is the time. It would make absolutely no sense for him to agree to take on skaters with the results of Trusova and Kostornaia as a primary coach and not devote time to coaching them. If they regress under him his lack of ability will become evident and it will ruin his academy. I think it’s unfair to compare Tarakanova, Sakhonovich etc because I don’t think he ever intended to train them with any regularity. Plus if I’m being really honest, neither of them were the one and he knew it. But Kostornaia was all but WC this year and Sasha the first in the world to land almost every quad. He isn’t stupid and knows what’s on the line here.

This is the biggest coaching-change surprise I can personally recall.

I support her decision to change coaches but I think Plushenko is a terrible choice for her. Plushenko doesn't have any artistry and I doubt he will help Aliona achieve her full potential in that regard. It is Aliona's grace which distinguishes her from all the other young Russians who can do amazing jumps.

Since Daniil already choreographed her two programs, I wonder if she has the right to use them.

Very true

A bigger piece of the sponsorship puzzle may not have to do with Eteri at all. As we all know, Aliona wants to become a neurosurgeon once she finishes skating. That’s amazing! However, medical schooling is very expensive, and takes a very long time to finish. It could take Aliona 10-12 years to become a neurosurgeon once she finishes skating. That is a lot of time and money. I do not know how affluent Aliona’s family is, but they may realize that it will be a struggle to pay for Aliona’s education without big sponsorships. So, when Plushenko promised the big sponsorships, Aliona and her family felt it would be the best decision to make for Aliona long term.

Medical school is public in Russia, isn’t it?

she did change her mind at one point although i don't remember if it was on being a neurosurgeon, but most recently that is her plan.

She changed her mind in one interview, but months later created an Instagram account doing sutures and gave another interview saying she wanted to be a neurosurgeon. Who knows.

"In mid-July, Kostornaya began to train poorly, not to fulfill our assignments, to snap back and show with all kinds that something was wrong"

The choreographer of the group Eteri Tutberidze Daniil Gleikhengauz commented on the transition of the 2020 European champion Alena Kostornaya.

“Personally, I do not fully see the logic in this. I tell you how it was.

Fees begin. Everyone came, and we have been in Novogorsk for two months already, you can see it in my hair. We trained, Eteri Georgievna and I, every day, apart from all our trainings, go out onto the night ice, where we set programs. It turned out that it was Alena who was the first to stage both programs this year.

Moreover, as you might guess, given that I posted the video, I myself was very pleased with how we got the program. I liked everything very much. The strangest thing about this is all that Alena herself liked. And she asked the girls to film how she rolls the track, the program. It was clear from her that she was getting high.

And then just abruptly, somewhere in the middle of July, she begins to train badly, not to carry out our tasks, snap back and show with all kinds that something is wrong. This does not last so long, after which we left the training of our second group of young children. Alena was already waiting for us in the corridor, who tells us that she no longer wants to train and that she agreed that she would train in Plushenko's group.

Well, you yourself understand the reaction when you just leave the workout and hear it. And I remember very well how I said to her: Alain, you are probably now in some kind of anger, you are of a transitional age. Because of this, you were offended or reacted to something - what happened? To which she answered me: two months ago I made this decision.

At that moment, I literally said that I could not believe it. Because I don’t think you could do that and then go to the training camp with us, train like that, enjoy the program, and so on.

But as her actions showed, it was true, ”said Gleichengauz.

I think Alena is smarter than that. She knows how bad she would be made publicly if she left like that...

Eteri is an extreme but there are few angel coaches when students leave.

Kori Ade, who lost the one internationally known skater she had, a skater whom she had coached since he was five years old, kept her own counsel and said nothing when he left. Made no snide inferences on social media. In other words, even though she was like Jason's second mother and it must have hurt, she acted like an adult .

Brian Orser. He may have said he didn't know what the issues were, but as far as I know, has never badmouthed a skater who left or said, oh they wanted this and that, oh they were jealous of this and that skater, oh there was something wrong with the skater.

In fact, I can't think of any coach of the skaters I follow who made snide remarks, no matter how provoked, upon the skaters' departure for another coach. Thank heavens from my experience, (and I certainly don't follow every coach, so I can only speak for the ones I know) most coaches are angels:yay:

Alena Kostornaia leaving Eteri

!!! So there's a chance we will finally get to see Alena with a good free program that will show off her full potential? :eeking:

...it seems she'll go to Plushenko.

...Oh. :ohwell: Well, that dream sure died quickly.

This guy gets exactly one chance to prove me wrong. He has literally been gifted the most artistic skater in about a decade. If this goes south, it's on him.

Why is anyone surprised about this? One coach coaching three of the top women is just not going to work, at least not for long. Eteri had the same problem when she had only two of the top women. Why did she think it would get better with three--four if you count Kamila Valieva, who will be Olympic eligible in 2022?

Being Eteri, I’m not surprised, but the fact that Aliona had programs done and said the best things about Eteri at the ISU awards is what makes it seems unexpected
