Does anyone have any information on Golden West, which just finished last night? Caroline Zhang and Danielle Kahle should have competed in the senior Ladies division.

i was going to ask the same thing. I can't wait for the results to be posted.

Caroline Zhang won (but fell on the first jump of her triple flip combination). Danielle Kahle did not compete. There is a thread about it on Sylvia's site.

There is a decent write up over on unseenskaters.com. Zhang landed 3F/3T in the short according to the report and fell on the 3F in her long (so no 3/3) and easily cruised to victory. Kahle withdrew.

Thanks for the tips. Here's the summary from unseenskaters.com. Caroline Zhang scored over 63 points in SHORT!! Wow, it looks like she has mastered triple+triple, just needs to make it more consistent!...

seems like Caroline is really serious about this triple triple. glad to hear to hear it. She will need it. Gets you thinking though, Kimmie will have to face the junior nationals champ at nationals who is armed with what kimmie has, a triple triple in both programs and what kimmie dosen't have, ( strech, level 4 spins, artistry).

I was doing photos there all weekend. Charoline's free has a lot of lovely moments, but I though she was leaning on the music too much. I hope this is still a work in progress because it seems to have a lot of holes in it to me when it comes to choreogrpahy and interpretation. Also, ice coversge and patttern could be better. Too much back and forth between the jumps in the first third.

Do you have the video clip? I'm more interested in her technical ability at this point of time. She has to get 3+3 consistently in order to compete internationally. The artistry side and style can always evolve in the future.

I travelled to this competition because the BC Summer Classic didn't have a lot of skaters in my group. It was so much hotter there than it is back home! I couldn't see the Senior Ladies long because my flight home was on Sunday afternoon. I wrote down the scores for the top 4 in the short though.

1. Caroline Zhang 37.65 + 25.45 = 63.10
I saw her land a triple flip - triple toe perfectly three times in the warm up. (It's my favorite combination because I love Yuna Kim!) She skated to a kinda fast guitar piece, with really cute attitude, and wore a gorgeous white and black dress. It didn't look like the typical red and black Spanish dresses, although I really liked the one Yuna had at Worlds. After she landed the triple flip-triple toe in the program, I think she did a double axel out of a spreadeagle, and then a triple lutz. I think her layback is better than anyone else's that I've ever seen! She has the coolest transition from that crazy pearl spin right into a Biellman! She skated last though, so I think everyone was really tired.

2. Laney Diggs 28.44 + 21.35 = 48.79
She had so much energy! Her program was SO cute, and she skated to really peppy Latin music. Her dress was really nicely beaded too, with some orange, I think. She fell on a triple lutz that had really fast rotations, but then she landed her triple flip right afterwards! She smiles through everything, and really makes you enjoy her program. I wish I could look that happy all the time when I skated!

3. Karen Zhou 27.42 + 21.30 = 48.72
Her program was really unique. I think she was supposed to be a mime! Her dress was black and white stripes with a red flower on the front, and she really showed the choreography off. She has really really long legs that make her jumps look pretty too. I think her double axel was the best jump, but she did triple flip and triple lutz too.

4. Tashe Smith 25.20 + 19.80 = 42.00
Her jumps are SO big! She's taller for a skater, but looks really long and lean. She did a pretty clean program, but I think she didn't score as high because she didn't try the harder jumps. She was wearing a really nice bright color too.

Out of the other skaters, I remembered Tenile Victorsen and Molly Oberstar the most. Both of them are really good at expressing their music. It was pretty funny because I think that Molly turned in the wrong music at first. Anyway, I had a lot of fun at this competition even though I didn't do my best in my own event.

Thanks for the review, Yuunnaa:love: You'll get the gold next time!

Anything to report on the boys?

It's wonderful to hear that Caroline landed 3F-3T in the SP and 3 times in the warm-up. How many girls do the 3-3 three times in a row for warm-up? She's funny. Usually it's stroke, stroke, a double here, a triple there, a triple combo if you're lucky, and if it's a 3-3 everyone applauds, but 3 times in a row. :) Too bad about her LP though, I'm sure she would've wanted to land that 3-3 again.

I wonder if anyone will put up a video on youtube...

I can't wait for Skate America!

Junior man. Skates in Riverside (So. Cal.) with Tammy Gambill. Tall, thin, kind of a Timmy Goebel look. Well rounded skater, with both technical ability and artistic ability. Threw a triple Axel at Golden West, but went splat (so did Keegan Messing). I expect you will see him at Nationals this year in Juniors.

Short program music is Latin. Lots of trumpets. Kind of a Paso Doble number. I asked him what his FS music was. It is a rather odd melange of three uncommon pieces that I can't remember the names of even one day later! Maybe a music maven with better memory than me can chime in. I found it a bit weird but interesting.

Somebody wrote to say that Rhohene Ward landed a quad at this event...haven't read any reports yet though of his performance.

Who is this Dornbush, and have I seen him before?
Richard Dornbush was 8th in Junior Men at 2007 US Nationals (4th in the FS in Spokane, so you may have seen him, Joe?) and is scheduled to compete next at the Vienna JGP (#3). His FS music this year is a medley of Celtic pieces.

Thanks a lot for your Senior Ladies SP report, Yuunnaa<! :)

Here's one person's summary of and comments on Zhang's Senior FS (not written by me):
Caroline Zhang - undoubtably the winner as you’d expect - I did hear the announcement that she won the outstanding performance award(for the 2nd year in a row). She had an uncharacteristic fall as she warmed up her 3f just before starting her program which she then did again(fall) IN the program so no triple/triple. [Jumps were:]
3f(fall), 3z/2t, 2a, 2a, 3f, 3r/2t/2r, 3z
She had her trademark spins and spirals - my only quibble is that she always does the same type of program - slow, lyrical and never a change of pace - this year’s music is Ave Maria - it shows her off beautifully but I’d love to see her try something different.

Official results have yet to be posted, but here's the link to the club site where they will be published: http://www.allyearfsc.com/

Golden West scores last year were spot on for Caroline's results on the JGP circuit, so I think this bodes well for her GP outing this year.

Upgrading from 3/2 to 3/3 gave Caro an extra 2.7 in base value, so that probably explains the bulk of the increase (+3.6) from 59.5 (GW '06) to 63.1 (GW '07), with probably some accompanying increase in the PCS. The base value of her SP should now be right in the ballpark of what the top four ladies had at the last WC (Yu-na, Miki, Carolina, Kimmie; Mao popped her loop and had a base value of 4 points lower).

What worries me is that Caro must not have scored very high (relatively speaking) either on the PCS or the GOE's, so despite her 3/3, her score of 63 wold put her in 5th at the last WC. Hopefully it's just a matter of her concentrating hard on the 3/3, so she isn't very comfortable or polished with her two brand new programs yet. Go Caro!
