PRESS RELEASE
Colorado Springs, Colo. (September 6, 2007) – Four-time U.S. silver medalist ice dancers Melissa Gregory & Denis Petukhov announced today that they have made a coaching change and will begin training under former U.S. medalist Priscilla Hill. Hill recently ended her 10-year relationship as head coach of three-time U.S. champion Johnny Weir.

“After what started to look like a great season, it ended up not being to our satisfaction,” Petukhovsaid. “We wanted to do what was necessary to keep improving and moving up the ranks. Priscilla is a great technician and has a great eye for giving you that finishing touch.”

Gregory and Petukhov paired up in the summer of 2000 and first competed at the State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 2002, when they placed third. They teamed up with coach Nikoli Morozov in Connecticut in the spring of 2003, and worked with him and his wife, Shae-Lynn Bourne, for three years. Under Morozov, they won three consecutive silver medals at the U.S. Championships, placed a career-best ninth at the World Figure Skating Championships, in 2006, and finished 14th at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Most recently, they claimed the silver medal – their fourth in a row – at the 2007 U.S Championships and placed 10th at the 2007 World Championships.

“Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov are one of the world’s elite ice dancing teams, and I am honored to become their head coach,” Hill said. “This season brings all of us new challenges, and I am very excited to be using my knowledge from dance, pairs and singles, as well as my many years of coaching experience, to help them in preparation for the upcoming season.”

Prior to signing on with Hill, Gregory and Petukhov were previously coached by 1980 Olympic ice dancing champions Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karpanosov at the University of Delaware. Linichuk and Karponosov, now married, won the 1980 Olympic gold medal for the Soviet Union. They also won two World titles and four Soviet Union titles.

Interesting choice. I didn't know that "Prill Hill" (as they apparently called her back in the day) had much of a dance background. I hope it works for them; it's kind of nice to see a dance couple work with someone who isn't on the list of the "same old people" that EVERYONE seems to have worked with at one time or another.

Wow. That is interesting. Let's hope that they are able to work well together. Nice to see that they take chances with thier coaching choices.

Correct me if I am wrong but they previously trained at the University of Delaware and will continue to train at the same place under a different coach?

Yes, that's where Linichuk & Karponosov train. I think a part of the appeal of training with L&K for G&P was working side-by-side with Denkova & Staviiski. Perhaps the fact that they won't be in Delaware anytime soon impacted their decision. Frankly, while I like this team, I have my doubts as to their ability to really improve in the eligible ranks.

I didn't know Ms. Hill was a ice dancer either. I am really surprised at this, becasue Gregory and Peukov recently changed coaches and have had much sucess since changing. Last year they improved so much and their dances looked such more competitive and closer to what international dancers were doing. Really surprised that they changed somthing that was working.

I agree with Ptichka. In spite of some brilliant Free Dances, R&J for example, they do not ignite with the audience.

I also think that Hill is an odd choice but then again, it may be what they need to get that 'it' look.

It will also get Hill to Sweden, and the pressure on Johnny will be greater while she, too will be watching, imo.

Me thinks that there is more to this coaching change then is being told!!

Their FD last season was so much better than R&J - choreography wise... still love R&J... and they got noticed by many with Adam and Eve....

Obviously the coaching last season just 'wasn't working' like we all thought. Yes they improved, but they must have felt they weren't getting, or weren't seeing, all they wanted to...

with coaching changes you just never know...

Or, the coaching change with Hill (I think that she has only coached Krylova/Ovsiannikov, for a short time as pros?) could be a complete disaster, they could drop out of the U.S. medals and Navarro/Bommentre will be getting a surprise trip to Sweden.

hey now! I don't like that!

Sorry Toni! I like G&P also (better than Belbin/Agosto, not as much as Davis/White). But I kind of question their recent coach-hopping, and now to a coach that has limited (at best) dance experience....I just don't think it is a given that they'll stay in the top 3 in the U.S., like some people think. I hope so, as I like them better than Navarro/Bommentre....but I think we'll have to wait for competition results (or at least SEE the new programs) before automatically assuming Worlds for them.

When you think about it. There was that, apparently, nifty Trio that they skated. Do you think Johnny had a say in their selecting Priscilla?

Joe

i am really surprised - both by the new coach choice and the fact that they switched coaches again. While most skaters who change coaches often do not improve in the standings as a result, Denkova and Stavinki changed coaches almost annually but managed to climb up in the rankings.

good luck to G&P. By far, my favorite USA team, so I really hope it works for them.

I guess this is like Sasha leaving Terosova. Sasha had a very good season under Terosova, and came out with brilliant new programs and footwork, chreography etc. everything looked perfect from the outside, but obviously behind the scenes things were not working out. just becasue skaters improve dosen't mean that the coach who improved them is the right coach.

This is too weird for words.

Don't you think the fact that they finished behind Davis & White at Worlds had something to do with all the changes? It will be a real negative for them if Davis & White beat them at Nationals.

If they needed a career tip, I'd say 'go beg Morozov to help you out, before it's too late'. It's the best I can come up with. I'm not a fan, I've become interested in them only because they are supposedly huge friends with Johnny Weir, and did the 'Fallen Angels' thing, which I liked.

I'm afraid I'll skip the whole dance part of the US Nats. But yes, I know that D&W are young and promising, and already have a respectable fanbase (outside the US, too). Great for them. All I can say is, let the best team win. Meanwhile, I'll be cheering for Virtue & Moir.
