Gregory and Petukhov Change Coaches

If they needed a career tip, I'd say 'go beg Morozov to help you out, before it's too late'. It's the best I can come up with.
They were with Morozov until they switched to Linichuk. Clearly, they did not think Morozov was quite doing it for them. I am still unsure that he is such a good dance choreographer (I think he has proven himself with singles). While Bourne & Kraatz and Grushina & Goncharov both did well under him, it is not clear to me how much Morozov had to do with either of those successes other than as a choreographer.

Linichuk and Karpsonov recently left UofD to coach at Ice Works in Aston, PA. Perhaps G&P wanted to stay put in Delaware rather than make the 40 minute drive each day.

If you think like me, what difference do the scores make? Their R&J was brilliant

I'm awaiting and hoping for Priscilla to give the judges a closer look, but the history of dance judging is so crude.

I guess I was thinking more of Naomi and Peter, I think they had a habbit of changing coaches every year, not much success came out of that...
Oh yes. Those two have tried Shpilband, Zhulin, and Tarasova / Morozov.

I think it's very possible that they got to know Hill through Weir. I think that Petukhov is very talented artistically. If G/P are interested in coaching after they retire from skating, they may be a formidable team, with Petukhov working on choreography.

Hill is strongest technically and in focusing on basic skills and line, the legacy of an earlier era, and she's a professional who expects self-motivation, which, clearly G/P have, never having been the darlings of anyone. I think the combination is exactly what G/P could use. It's not an easy combination to find, since most coaches are either stronger in theatricality or as technicians in terms of skills like lifts or twizzles. In my opinion, it's the core strength of edging and line that allows skaters to interpret the music, rather than theatricality.

Last year they improved so much and their dances looked such more competitive and closer to what international dancers were doing.

IMHO, that wasn't necessarily a good thing. I know I'm probably in a minority here, but I was rather disappointed in "Adam & Eve.". After hearing so much about it, when I finally saw it, to my mind, it looked exactly like the same old dramatic thrashing and flouncing around that almost everyone else has been doing the last several seasons. G & P, ever since they came on the scene, got better and better every season, but last season, I feel they actually took a step backwards. Perhaps having a coach who is outside the usual "ice dance loop" will enable them to come up with something new and different and a little outside the box; they're certainly capable of doing a great job with any material they choose to use; I'm hoping that this coaching change will allow them to go in an exciting new direction.

jonnycoup - Your rationale is well taken and one of the reasons I am going along with Priscilla is in hope she can get the sturm and drang out of them. It's time to lighten up on dance. Life isn't all that tragic and full of struggle as we have seen in the past 15 years. Stone face dancing doesn't get to me.

With Morosov being as busy as he is, he wouldn't have the time or desire to give them the attention they need and deserve. He has so many skaters -dance and singles- that it seems he picks and chooses and the others are just out of luck...

I'm sure this is the way with many coaches who have a lot of pupils on the senior circut, but still.

I was very happy when they left him and went to Linichuk(however that's spelled lol) and they did improve in line and quality and speed...

Morosov uses the same 5 pieces of music for everyone, it seems, Adam and Eve was SUCH a great change *whew*

I've never seen Priscilla Hill coach dance team, am I wrong? I know she is a great coach for singles. My prediction for Nationals this year will be Tanith/Ben for Gold, Meryl/Charlie for silver and Emily/Evan for Bronze. This young team, Emily/Evan, is amazing, they will be on the podium if they stay injury free.

Priscilla does teach dancing. Morozov teaches Singles. Coaches know their trade.
Now would there be a change in your early prediction if G/P did not go to Hill?
Have you considered the Hubbells who are out injured and might get well?

Careers in crisis

Strange...strange...strange move.

I've heard rumours about this for about three weeks but I did not want to believe it was true.

Anyone know what was really going on behind the scenes (leading to the coaching switch)?

I agree with those who think multiple coaching switches (such as Gregory & Pethukov have had) indicates a problem...I am thinking of Chait & Sakhnovsky, Lang & Tchernyshev, Nicole Bobek (who had a different coach every season), Sasha Cohen, Timothy Goebel, Jenny Kirk, Angela Nikodinov, Joannie Rochette...it's indicative of a career in crisis.

I would hate to see Gregory & Pethukov's careers stall or end prematurely as we saw with many of the aformentioned coach switchers.

they stayed with Morosov for a long time, as well as their coaches prior to Nikolai (and Shae)... this is the first time they've switched after just one season.

I'm willing to give it a chance. Hopefully this is a good change for them. We have no way of knowing until we see the programs. I think people who are pronouncing gloom and doom for them need to just sit back and see what happens.

Personally I would like to see the podium at Nats be G/P, D/W and N/B :)
