It's been a bad week for tigers in zoos

First a tiger in a Chinese zoo was killed, skinned and beheaded by thieves. Then as you have probably heard, a tiger attacked three people after escaping the zoo. One ended up dead and the tiger, Tatiana, was shot dead by police.

Authorities are baffled as to how she got out. It has been hinted that zoo visitors were taunting her before she escaped.

Yes, it is sad enough these creatures have to be put in Zoos for our amusement. When these incidents happen it makes one wonder. I feel animals should be left in their natural habitat. It's really not the tiger's fault if these people were taunting it. People should know better.

I agree... the tiger should have been rewarded. cruelty to animals should never ever be tolerated.

speaking of tigers - the Alaska Zoo lost a tiger to illness last night...

went to the zoo today... AK Zoo sucks when it comes to giving animals space... it's just sad.

First: lots of other boards have threads on this, but--I would not at this point blame the boys (and I certainly wouldn't go around saying the deserved to die) because the police have not confirmed any rumors about shoes or bloody footprints. What is now known is the zoo is in trouble with the AZA because it turns out the moat and fence were not to the reccommended height and width for a tiger enclosure. And tigers generally do not need any kind of provocation to attack--sometimes they simply do.

Also, regardless of feelings about displaying animals, if it weren't for zoos, we probably wouldn't have tigers at all. And I can't really blame people in India, especially, for not feeling super-anxious about preserving them given how prone wild tigers are to attacking people and livestock. They may only be hunting for food, doing what predators do (a tiger is a tiger, after all), but that doesn't make the people they kill any less dead.

Human overpopulation has taken away much of their habitat, and the bad people that are poachers are killing them.

Did you know people who are cruel to animals often go on to be rapists, serial killers or child molestors?
