Beillmann spin

If we believe good directors did not make good former actors, We can say that good skating coaches did not make good former skaters.

What surprised me was to see how unmusical she was, but then youtube doesn't always look as good as it does LIVE. She did very little with that Poet and Peasant Overture. I would like Lambiel to give that music a try.

btw, I was hoping to see a youtube of Denise.

In her defense, the accepted style of that time was pretty clunky looking. Peggy Fleming needed all her grace to overcome it. Plus, this was in Soviet days. Did Moskvina even get to decide on the choreography? She very well may have been told what she would do. Lastly, pairs probably was her strength. Many pair skaters can't carry off single skating.

Take away the Beilman, add in a spiral, and triple the doubles, and you've got an MK program there...

While we are talking about beillman's I have a question.
At a seminar a very famous coach told me that Denise had her bottom 2 ribs removed so she could do the beillman. My friend and I have searched endlessly for confirmation but so far, we have found none.
Is this true?

I would love to know. However, if it is true, it was definitely unnecessary because I can do a beillman with all of my ribs! :cool:

she looks very young and cute in that video, and yeah, strange looking beilman! Nice to see these old videos and marvel at how far we have come. Nowadays you would by no means be garunteed a medal in juvinlle girls with a program like that!

I know! I'm so transparent...

(Honestly though, I was just sitting there watching that Youtube clip, and that was the thought that popped into my head - that in some ways ladies skating hadn't changed that much, because the Kween was able to win with LPs that were just about as empty as Moskvina's. Elements executed well, grace/some musicality, with little to no transitions, and lots of stroking... )
 
Notice her wonderful carriage and graceful arm movement. I would not define her skating as clunky. In those days skaters were taught how to stroke properly and how to cover the ice. Her jumps were not big, but ladies then did not have to do the jumps they now do. I'll bet she was good at figures - one can see from her deep edges. Frankly, I enjoyed watching her. It reminded me of the old school of figure skating. Every movement flowed from one element to the next.
I can see why she is such a great coach.

I think the Beilman spin is a gorgeos spin, only the new judging system completely ruins it! All of the girls are doing it now, but half the time it isn't done properly, but they have to do it in order to get the points! it doesn't have the same effect as it did before.
 
I've come to hate and detest Biellmann spins since CoP made sure that crappy Biellmann's got just as much credit as good ones.

IIRC (and it's quite possible I don't) it was a Canadian (show?) skater who first did it. It got named after Biellmann because she's the one who made it famous (esp at 1980 olys).

Agree! Every time I see a Bielmann spin, I feel like the skater is trying to say:

Look! How well I can contort my body!

LOL ITA! Or not. Especially when they get that pained look on their face during the .....I'm stretching as far as I can but I can't quite grasp my blade part of the spin.

If that's true, Caroline must have had vertebrae removed. :biggrin:
 
I noticed a couple of other moves here that at some point must have simply gone out of fashion...There's that jump from the left foot to the right foot in the middle of the camel spin at 2:37, and I'm not quite sure what to make of that jump right at the beginning (:12) where she lands on a foward edge. :scratch: It's either a half-axel or a forward wally depending on one's point of view.​
