Kamila Valieva: Anti-doping Case and Follow-ups

Can you imagine what Kamila's parents would be going through if they were American? They would be called all kinds of irresponsible, child abusers, etc. They would be asked how their daughter had all kinds of substances in her body. It would be a national scandal and no government officials would be standing behind it. People would be asking for child protective services to take her away. This is a LOT more tame because it's Russia--believe you me.

It's a tough situation. I try to take a step back, knowing that the Western media is largely anti-Russia and anti-China. However, even as a big Kamila fan, I'm trying to understand how the CAS arrived to its decision. For her to compete, there should be some possible scenario that produces a favorable outcome for her case. If it's that she is only 15 and therefore deserved only a warning, that should have been decided one way or another yesterday. I guess it's that the grandfather saliva excuse should be examined further, which is really odd.
Huh? I've read A LOT of VERY pro-Valieva press from the West over the last several days. Arguing with a friend who wrote some of it.

she was found to doping and to be drugged up

It appears that a sample from her had a trace amount of a substance that's 'banned' (though there is not special explanation of why....). If you unlimited faith in the accuracy of the doping authorities... I don't know what to say...

it's also been said in this thread that TMZ doesn't dissolve in saliva or water but lower down the system... so ... i have a hard time believing that's even possible, even if she had been near her grandpa who apparently likes in Kazan... not exactly next door to Moscow or SPB.
Unless she drank dirty toilet water?

L-carnitine isn't heart medication and it is widely known and used as a supplement by athletes because it is also naturally found in food. It's similar to creatine. Hypoxen is the one I have no clue about.

The fact that NYT is leaking these kinds of details in such a sensitive case of a Protected Person is shameful. There has been so much leaking because certain people dislike the result. They really think they can reveal the medical information of a 15 year old like that?

the info must be out there somewhere!!! I am sure they didn't make it up

Your comment is confusing. You are explaining exactly what being caught doping is (finding a banned substance in a sample) and yet it seems you are using it as an argument against her doping?

Just google the results for L-carnitine…and also from a medical specialist that it can be use for heart health issues…. Angina and fluid build up in the body….fact..

Cheaters who have escaped the laws : that doesn't excuse the positive test of a child 2 months before the Olympics. It also doesn't excuse the simple fact that she was allowed to compete against clean athletes. This is what this thread is about... it's not about Lance Armstrong, and lip balms. It's about a child, ingesting substances that are meant to bring better blood circulation so her body can recover better and faster, and so she can train more, until her body can no longer take the toll of it, so she retires before ever getting to maturity.
How many Julia, Adelina, Zhenya, Alina, Aliona, Adian (and I am skipping others) will Sambo 70 go through?
This is exactly what I'm always trying to say but you did better than anything else I've read or heard. I thank you - crystal clear.

The "medical" information was already on this website:

at least 24 hours before the NY Times wrote its article. If a 15 year old is world medalist, competing in the Olympics, and in the public eye for testing positive for a banned substance, I fail to see why a journalist would not use this information. :scratch2:

ETA: Kamila has already escaped the consequences of failing this test, IMO, due to the status as a "protected person" under WADA/IOC. That status, AFAIK, does not exist outside that structure.

I'm saying the case isn't settled yet (unless being charged is the same as convicted for you....
Which would make you feel worse....

KV competes, medals, and at some later time has to forfeit her medal?

She's prevented from competing and later cleared?

what would make the athletes against whom she is competing feel worse?

I'm torn on the one hand it sucks on the other...well WTF is going on in Team Crystal? If your training methods are so brutal you need heart medications to survive them there's something seriously f'ed up.

RUSADA needs to invite WADA to Crystal and they need to go over that place with a fine toothed comb. Any "vitamins" need to be confiscated and checked, receipts for purchases of vitamins need to be checked. Computers, laptops...

In fact Crystal should personally invite them, if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear.

Doing some research, I found this interesting study of attitudes towards nutritional supplements and medications in junior Russian (and Norwegian) athletes. It lists Hypoxen (on page 83) as a particularly common medication taken for performance enhancement, which, for the interviewed athletes mostly meant "preparations that either improve body functions (increasing the blood's ability to transport oxygen and glucose or increase cell metabolism) or provide an additional boost of energy before a competition."

According to one participant: "You can just come to a pharmacy and buy it all without recipe [sic]. Hypoxen is a good medication. It increases your resistance to hypoxia. So, you take it before you get to the mountains. ... Also, during competitions which are at a normal altitude, it is very effective because you are not in the mountains and you have enough oxygen in the air already. Then Hypoxen gives you an additional advantage."

The author notes, shortly after the talk about Hypoxen that "To get an additional boost before a competition, some athletes also reported that they occasionally consume other stimulating supplements like l-carnitine."

Beyond what's listed, though, I was struck by how trimetazidine's alleged benefits overlap with the benefits these junior Russian athletes sought from the unbanned PEDs.

Maybe it can be ok but it's not heart medication. You know this 100% since you looked it up, I don't need to say anymore.

Here's a source:

It's called journalistic integrity. But the bigger issue is the leakers. They even said in the article that they spoke to someone at the hearing, trying to dig up dirt. The fact that they suggest L-cartinine is heart medication shows how they work from inside a gutter. Not even suggest, they out and out call it heart medication which is false.
