Grand Prix Assignments 2023/24 released

Women are going to be an absolute bloodbath. There are anywhere from 6-8 skaters who could make the podium at every event. Here's hoping for triumphant returns for Young, Wakaba, Mana, Bradie, and Rika, and soaring successes for Mai and Yelim.

The men are going to be complete chaos. There are a lot of juniors-turning-seniors, men returning from injury, Canadian men, Selev-cacti, etc. I will begin stocking up on chocolate immediately.
Canadian men will be a non factor... none of them has 2 spots... and none of them will compete, unless other w/d, after SKAM and SCI.

wait, Kevin not in Angers :frown: :frown:
still a really good list of starters, but ☹️
Espoo sounds like a slightly better fit for me, but the journey is much more expensive and time-consuming, so I guess I still prefer Angers

challengers! They should get one in Europe? Remain hopeful my friend !
Admiring your optimism then lol. Because I'm somehow convinced P² will do Challenger in Montreal in Sep and won't branch out to Europe. IF they do, I fear it might be to Nebelhorn and I plan JGP trip on this weekend...Finlandia Trophy would be ideal for my crotchety plans, but I think it won't be true.
We shall see then. Or I should throw caution in the wind, buy Worlds tickets and hope I can get into the right mind space until then.

I will let you know as soon as I find out about ACI. The way I see it though is that Nik and Lolo will be at ACI... and perhaps LaLa as well.. so Skate Canada may want to give Piper and Paul another challenger.

Regarding Worlds : it may be their last event. So, if you are indeed in the mood for that, I'd do it. I will never regret going to Nationals just to see Patrick in one of his last competitions... :)

Okay - where is SAM MINDRA? He was lights out at Nationals last year. His long program was wonderful. Looking at the US assignments I see some that make me question who was choosing these skaters? So happy to see Hawayek and Baker with a couple of assignments. I want to see them on a podium or two. Fingers crossed their health issues are in the past. They are so entertaining.

Personally, I find the men's field in Espoo is close to perfection.😻 In fact, it would be perfection if they gave the tbd spot to Kyrylo Marsak, who has his training base in Finland.

Gotta check the rest of the disciplines now and figure out which event will likely have the most cartwheels...

Are they definitely moving up to seniors this year? I thought they had one more season of being eligible for Juniors if they wanted, but I may have misremembered.
My understanding is that they have aged out.

There are a few TBAs in dance, though, so there’s still hope. I enjoy them also!

I think Kyrylo is strong candidate.

Yes, Alexa is a Chicago native, she and Chris have bought a home in Chicago and her family (mother, sister) still live in Chicagoland. Unless Brandon moves to Chicago, they have no practice time together.

But they have made no official announcement.🤔
Alexa and Brandon are still doing shows. It's probably better for them not to announce a retirement while they are seeking show opportunities. The question mark is more attractive. For that matter, Nathan Chen never announced his retirement, but he's not doing GPS assignments.

I really liked Sam too but to get GP assignments, he needs to be ranking among international skaters. Has he even competed on the international circuit? The only spot he probably can get is a host spot based on the qualifying rules in place for GP assignments.

Never heard tell of him before, but @noskates' comment got me curious so I looked up his Rink Results and Skating Scores profiles.

He was 4th in the Junior Men's competition at the Challenge Cup in 2020. But that's the only international competition listed on either site.

Many skaters today rarely announce that they are retiring. It's been obvious for awhile now that Alexa and Brandon are moving on. She's coaching full time, and Brandon will be going to school,* and keeping up with his winning poker playing hobby! 🤑🥇

As happened last season, there will be additions and probably some withdrawals before the GP begins. It's always interesting though to see the initial entry lists for the GP!

As expected, Jason Brown will not skate during the GP, but he will likely debut new programs at the Japan Open. He and Rohene (who celebrates his b'day today) have begun working on new choreo! 😍 In the absence of JB, Ilia Malinin & Camden Pulkinen will get two assignments. But it looks like the rest for U.S. men, have been spread out one apiece between Kapeikis, Naumov, Torgashev, Broussard, and Jimmy Ma. This appears to mean giving opportunity for one of them to step up and have a great showing, which counts when 'body of work' assessments are made post U.S. Nationals. On paper, Ilia and Camden are expected to do well. For the others, how they perform may play into 4CCs assignments after U.S. Nats. As for Worlds it's probably going to be Ilia, Jason, and Camden, unless something unexpected happens. The U.S. guys with one GP should get other international comps during the season.

* BTW, Brandon is also listed in an Instagram story on TeamToddandJenni, as a coach at the Irvine rink.

And also Lucas Broussard (Cup of China). He's one the skaters this season I'm very interested in . I want to see how he transitions to the senior rank.

A lot could happen between now and US Nationals, so I haven't penciled in my World Team quite yet. LOL

I also saw the Instagram of Jason getting new choreo from Birthday Boy Rohene. No hints as to music, alas.

Speaking of music and choreo, have there been any clues from Ilia? I'm hoping for something in a different direction this year.

The US fed only controls their own GP assignments. For SKAM, they picked Ilia to bring in the crowd, which is completely expected, Andrew and Naumov. Lucas, Camden, Liam and Jimmy were invited by the other GP hosts, so I am not so sure how much USFED had a say in how that turned out. For Liam, it's a no-brainer as he does train in the Vancouver area where the event will be held, just like SKAM invited Gogolev who trains in the USA.
