Grand Prix Assignments 2023/24 released

well that's sad. I only attended SCI once and it was jam packed... and there was no Patrick Chan.
It is sad, but it is a fact.

Maybe with World gold, maybe with Olympic gold. In the US at least, that helps. As in Nathan. Vincent Zhou had Worlds bronze and was not attracting crowds.

Jumps don‘t help, people who know what a quad Axel is already know about Ilia.

if I had unlimited funds and smarts, perhaps I could figure it out.

Perhaps indeed :)

USFS asked themselves "what would the Russians do?"
And then did the opposite.

If that were enough to bring in crowds, there would be crowds.

And there aren’t. Ilia is selected as the most accomplished US men‘s skater. But that in and of itself will not attract crowds.
Nathan didn't attract crowds, which was a crime.

From going to Nationals for several years, I can say the ladies are who sell the crowd out, including when Nathan was skating. From going to Worlds a grand total of one time - ladies are who sell out. That's in the US of course, but I'd think most of the people at SKAM would be American, though I'm aware people do come in from all over.

Definitely a US thing. (that women bring a crowd). In Canada, I would say that champions bring the crowd... When D/R would skate... crowd... when V/M would skate... crowd... when Patrick would skate crowd... when Osmond would skate... crowd... but someone else may have a different perception of it all.

What were the numbers like last year, do you know?

(Looking at the lists this year, SCI is very promising, quite a lot of the folk I like :coffee: Now whether I will be able to watch it given the hour and ISU gatekeeping... but maybe )

USFS asked themselves "what would the Russians do?"
And then did the opposite.

I'm not sure what the "doing what the Russians do" means?

But whatever the Russians do, or the Japanese do, or the Senegalese do, it wouldn't work in the US. We need to figure out what works here.

And until someone with unlimited funds and smarts conducts actual real live professional marketing studies (instead of "me and all my friends like X." I love saying "Me and all my friends like X". But it's not proof) we can't say.

No idea... i don't even remember where it was LOL... was it missisauga? Yeah it was... but no idea how many people went.. This year it's in Vancouver. It's not downtown but near UBC. I am guessing some folks like @NanaPat or @lariko may go... Maybe they can give you an idea of how many people show up... I have no recollection of who was able to attend the Missisauga one... maybe @Arriba627 or @SnowWhite

To me it is a very smart decision from the French Fed. Kévin is probably part of the decision too because indeed he is a 4th seed and he would have a say in which GP he would like after the first 3 seeds have chosen. At least, this is how I remember how the seeding works.

French GP "got" Ilia who is the 3rd seed... pretty much... that means that Shoma and Jun picked other events and Ilia was stuck with GP France.... but look at where is the 4th to 6th seed :) by not choosing Kévin, they have made life much easier for Adam who is the reigning European Champion/ GP France reigning gold medal winner.
Kévin somewhere else
Jason no GP
Kazuki not there
Keegan retired...
Lucas, with his 8th place finish at worlds is then the 6th seeded skater .. and Adam can definitely compete with him and any of the European guys since he beat them all at Euros.

I think it's a very smart move.
Exactly. The French missed out getting their guys to the GPF last season, now they seem to know they have 2 potential finalist and is working to give them both the best assignments that will allow both Adam and Kevin to qualify.

Wakaba vs. Rion Sumiyoshi in France! Wakababy might still have a 3A (comeback year) and Rion might still have a quad toe (puberty?). Inconsistency plagues both. And they're up against a rejuvenated world medalist Haein Lee!
It's actually not a big surprise, as Wakaba and Rion are now training under the same coach (Koji Okajima). My only concern for Wakaba is her condition upon resuming the competitions: I don't think it's a good idea to rush into the more difficult elements, especially considering she's also prone to injuries.

We will soon find out about Wakaba's condition - she does have a local competition coming up this weekend (FS only, and Rion will be in the same competition).

I checked Finland's FED homepages They will announce the TBD skaters 13th August. They tell only "selections will be made according to ISU's criteria". It means in women there are enough local skaters who have the minimum scores but I in men am not sure. Even I perhaps should be patriotic, I still think Kyrylo deserves the spot.

I’m all about redemption stories, so I will be rooting for Romsky in his one event and Amber in her two. Such promise from both that has never been realized.

I suppose my dream to see Shoma skate in a completion won’t be realized. No North American comps, but I understand why. (Ice shows)

My daughter and I have tickets for Skate Canada, but it looks like very few tickets have been sold overall. Maybe sales will pick up now that lineup is announced. I have been to three events in Canada so far, and every one has been packed. Only SCI was in Kelowna, and had Hanyu, and it was an absolute zoo.

Only event I attended in the US was 4CC, and it was not well attended. That was actually good for us, as it was our first post-COVID event and I was wary about crowds.

Are Sui/Han coming back? They've been spotted practising.

Happy that Shoma has more time to prepare and that Wakaba has 2 assignments!
I am a fan of France dance & NHK pairs line-up :)

The dance event in France is deep this year! May need to figure a way to get there - does anyone have any advice on how much tickets were last year/when they went on sale?
