Jeffrey Buttle has retired

Very sorry to see him go, but good luck in future endeavors.

While I am happy for him and the fact that he can go on to do everything else he has always wanted (doesn't he have a chemical engineering degree) and be injury free, i'm also disappointed that we won't get to see any more competitive programmes from him. Wish he'd have stayed in to the Olympics in Vancouver but if he's ready to move on, then good for him. Good luck Jeff.

I'm shocked beyond words! On seeing the thread, I thought it was a joke! I was never Buttle's fan, but I certainly did not expect this! And the season just before the Olympics! Does anyone have any more insight into this?

I do have to say, though, that the article wasn't exactly well proof-read. Here is quote: With that victory, he became the first man to win a world title since Elvis Stojko in 1997. I realize they just forgot to say "Canadian" between "first" and "man", but it's still funny.

Wow, I didn't see this news coming at all. I wish Jeff all the best (and kudos to him for being able to go out on top) but boy will I miss seeing him in competitions as we head towards the Vancouver Olympics.

The good news here is that he intends to continue skating and be involved with Skate Canada in some capacity ....

I first heard of his retirement at fsuniverse and was completely surprised. He will be greatly missed by me. Jeff! I wonder if he will become some sort of advisor now for Joannie. They seem to be really good friends. Maybe he can help her with the 3flip+3toe since that has been such a strong combo for him. I dunno, just a thought. I am so glad he will continue skating, but I still have to wonder if he may be seriously injured to make this decision . . . I really hope he is not hurt.

I must admit I was/am shocked, disappointed and sad to see Jeff retire (and though the thread was a poor-taste joke). However, after reading the articles, especially the second one, I must admit I really do admire Jeff for his decision and his conclusion-reaching process shows a lot about him as a person, especially when he explains that the city of the Olympics should not affect his decision. He can retire being proud of everything he accomplished and, though it is still disappointing to see him go, he was wonderful during his competitive years and I look forward to seeing him skate in shows (if he decides to) and his continued implication with Skate Canada. Congrats, Jeff, for everything you accomplished, for creating wonderful programs despite the idea that the CoP made that impossible, and for treating the audience to so many memorable programs and skates.

Ptichka, the article says Canadian now. I'm surprised too at the news.

I always liked him. It's good he is going to stay involed with skating. Maybe in the future he will turn to coaching. He is still young and I wish him luck in the engineering field.

I'm shocked too. I once was a Montrealer and always felt the Maple Leaf in Jeff.
But I'm also glad to know that he is fully satisfied with his competitive career. I suppose his conclusion wasn't drawn just logical-wise.

Jeff, I will miss you at Nationals. With Sandhu and Buttle gone, the arena at Nationals will feel empty. It won't be the same any more.

Having said that, it will be a lot of pressure on the shoulders of young Patrick at international stages now. Other than him, there is no serious contender from Canada at 2009 Worlds. Hope any of Ten, Chipeur, Russell, Mabee step up to the plate and fill the void.

Or Jeff can come back and train like Lance Armstrong.

I think this was a wise choice for Jeff. He recognized that at Worlds, all the stars were in alignment and enabled him to deliver a squeaky-clean program with all the interpretive nuances, and the chances of that happening again were slim. Why not go out on top, instead of continuing on and not being able to achieve that one magic moment again?

I am shocked by this news, but am so glad we got to see him skate at Mike's show this past Saturday (and at Kimmie's show in 8/07). I've liked Jeff ever since he won the silver medal at NHK Trophy (circa 2001?/2002?). Boy, will I miss him on the Olympic eligible scene - he was my favorite eligible men's skater of the last few years. Thanks, Jeff, for all your memorable performances, and reminding us that figure skating is not just about jumping.

Just what I was about to say!

I must say, I am surprised. Then again, I suppose he may feel that now is the best time having both a world title and an olympic medal.

I thought it was a joke too when I saw the title. Well good luck to him in the future in whatever he decides to do. Olympic medalist and world champion are pretty great accomplishments!!

I wonder if he will be joining Stars on Ice full time (just a wish) since he was a guest star on the Canadian leg of the tour.

Oh no no no!!! I can't believe it! This is sooo sad! But I wish him all the best and good luck! Thank you for everything, Jeff! I'll miss you!

I will miss Buttle´s skating very much and hope that US SOI understands to hire this talented skater...
