2025 Canadian Nationals: General Info and pre-game chat

The 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships are scheduled to take place Jan. 14-19, 2025, at the Place Bell Arena in Laval, QC, Canada. Approximately 250 skaters in the women’s, men’s, pair and ice dance disciplines will compete at the senior and junior levels.

Athletes will vie for spots on the National Team that will compete at the 2025 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, 2025 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, and the 2025 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

This is a project I'm working on for Sectionals - Byes to Challenge/Nationals.

It tracks who has a bye for what, and also includes what CTES minimums they have. Also has the number of Challenge entries for each section including byes. The categories are confirmed now, but there could be more byes coming or changing.

I added Alberta. For Ontario, I'm going to wait for the entries to be finalized first. Quebec needs editing since I didn't wait and now there's no Senior Pairs event there.

Challenge Qualifying Minimum Scores:

For Juniors and Seniors, these are the TES scores that need to be reached in the free skate in order to qualify for Challenge. They must be reached between July 1 of the preceding season and the deadline for entries for Challenge.

(This reference for TES scores to look for and why someone may medal at sectionals but not end up going to Challenge. I thought about tracking TES scores, but decided against it this season.)

Starting this season, the skating order for skaters with byes will change for the short program. It will now be based on World Standings so that the highest ranked skater will skate last. The orders in the ranking should be set now since the skaters with assignments before Nationals very likely will not overtake other skaters.

Here's how the Senior skate orders should work once the standings are updated for Tallinn Trophy in descending order:

** skaters who may be eligible for a bye to Nationals based upon assignment to Warsaw Cup, which will be within 7 days of Challenge. I think Bashynska/Beaumont have a bye since they were initially on the graphic for Challenge as the winners from last season, but were replaced by Nguyen/Giang who won the Junior category. The byes should be confirmed when the Challenge start orders come out.

The last possible change to the order happened today since Roman will pass Aleksa in the standings with the next update (1284 to 1283.) Kaiya will be the only defending champion who will not skate last. I think there were too many questions last year about why Piper/Paul weren't skating last in the rhythm dance that caused this change.

Edit - I was wrong about the last possible change, Katherine Medland Spence will pass Hetty Shi in the standings thanks to her win at Warsaw Cup.

The entries list is posted (thank you Golden Skate for linking to it). Glad to see Ksenia is on the list! Sad that there is no Lulu Lin or Alexa Volkova. Perhaps their injuries do not allow them to safely compete at nationals. Grayson is also listed in Seniors - so more good news.

Quebec is really where it's happening in women in terms of depth. (both in seniors and juniors)

Senior Women will be fun. 8 women with the 4CC minimums (5 with Worlds) and another 3 who are eligible for Junior Worlds (Kara, Megan and Hetty.) So that'll be 11/18 competitors who are eligible for an ISU Championship.

Also they now have a fourth Senior Synchro team competing, Black Gold from Alberta. I think they're the Elite 12 team, it's nice to see them get to compete here.
