2025 U.S. Nationals Senior Men's Free Skate

Ok. So after this event, here are my picks for selection:

JR. Worlds - Jacob, winner of Junior nationals (I didn’t even see that event)

4CC - Andrew, Camden, Max

SR. Worlds - Ilia, Andrew and Jason 😳
- After arguing against Jason all day yesterday, I deliberated between Camden and Jason and chose in favour of Jason by 60/40 decision. Camden is too 🌵 and 4CC is a gift for him and Max. We need a skater that can score 240+ internationally and I think if Jason regains his 3A, he is the one 🫣)
I would send Jacob and Patrick Blackwell to junior worlds. The winner of junior nationals has the technical minimums from this year's Cup of Nice, but that is his only international competition other than Cranberry Cup. Patrick has more experience.

My fave of tonight.
I just get mad when he does 4T and then 4T 2T. Why doesn’t he add the 2T to the first 4T? I get nervous he will REP
I have suspicions about this... sometimes the second quad is just a bit less powerful and tagging the second jump after is a great way to hide this. But maybe this is just my imagination....

I love Jason but has he even petitioned for the team? I think Jason wants to go to the Olympics again and skate in the team event. That's why he did the GPs this year, to prepare for next year. I don't think he cares about going to Worlds and placing top 10 or even top 5 . He's done that so many times.

OK. You convinced me in favour of Camden now. (60/40 for Camden) 🥺

Can they do a skate off between Camden and Max (at 4CC)?
I personally hate skate-offs. I easily prefer Naumov to Pulkinen, but Naumov is just as inconsistent so you still have the same risks. 4CC is not going to give any information that we don’t already know.

Makes sense, given the Russian ban for the team event, USA has a very high chance of getting gold barring any disasters

Well since you know who will win Worlds or at least medal and Andrew should do well, whoever else goes it's just a gift to them. I don't think Jason will go and would rather Camden not (he's been twice) so Max is my choice. BTW I think Andew just about equaled Jason's best or at least got close. So we have a new number two.

honestly Camden didn’t really impress me either. I found him slow, particularly through the steps and the program lacked transitions.

I’m not sure who is a better bet on getting a quad between him and Max. Cam managed a clearly < one in the short and Max barely ever lands his.

But Max’s overall skating impressed me more throughout this competition. He was faster, had way more transitions, and the spins were slightly better. He’s a performer and a genuinely enjoy his skating. Camden is too but his focus is clearly elsewhere now and I wouldn’t bet anything on him.

It’s a shame Max didn’t land at least one quad this outing, he’d be on the team for sure.

Can they do a skate off between Camden and Max (at 4CC)?
They don't include the current 4CC as part of the Worlds selection criteria, only the past 4CC. They look at the scores and weighting. Max has an advantage in that his GP score of 216 at Skate America is higher than both of Camden's assignments this season. GP is weighted higher than Challengers, it'll be interesting to see how they work it out since Camden wasn't much higher than Max here.

I'm so happy about Torgashev!!! LET'S GO TO WORLDS!! He's by far my fave US men's skater after Ilia. Just an incredible skater and really coming into his own now.

I thought that was super fun from Ilia too. Looked miles better than at GPF. The quad axel and both quad lutzes were just incredible. Loved the backward-spider lunge at the end too. Not a fan of the Bonaly-1 foot-landing back flip attempt. His is too messy, and his stepout backflip is much neater.

I can't see the argument for Max over Camden. He doesn't get great PCS from international judges and doesn't have any international results to hold off Camden placing ahead of him here. Camden, OTOH, does get the PCS which does matter when both are given to technical disasters.

Why does Jason have to be on the team?? He has not skated well this year at all?? He has given up on any quad? I love his skating but objectively he will always be a great show skater if not regardless.

What I am a bit concerned is thejudging. Ilia gets a monster score even with errors In part his jumps are worth so much. Remember a fall especially on the more difficcult quads is worth a significant triple.

If Jason can skate to top 5 in the world like last time he deserves to be on the team. I clarified that I would only name him if he can be monitored and proves he has resolved the issues but I’m not even sure how that would work if they have to make the decision now. They’d basically be taking his word for it that he’d be ready because he doesn’t have the body of work this season and I don’t think it works that way.

In the past other countries have waited until after EC/4CC to name the team but 4CC is close to Worlds this year.

It’s a shame too because this may mean the loss of the third spot. And I really hope we aren’t here next year having almost the same stupid argument we did 3 years ago about whether Jason “deserves” to go because it’s “his fault” for losing the spot or maybe it’s everyone else’s “fault” because they couldn’t get it either. And blah blah blah.
