Men's LP

How did Sawyer (no quad, no triple Axel) get a higher TECH score than Bradley with a clean quad and two clean triple Axels?

GOE's
Shawn did a wonderful job of doing everything but axel cleanly.
Bradley elements are quite sloppy. while has good hight his rotations are wild and his landing scratchy, not much flow

I think MM was asking about tech scores - and I'm confused too. Unfortunately, I can't make heads or tails of protocols until I print them out (my eyes aren't what they used to be)...which I do when I can sneak it at work :agree:

After looking at the protocols the only thing keeping shawn from playing with the big boys is the 3A. I'm starting to think the 3A is becoming more important than the quad

GOEs are about tech scores.

Perhaps. I found it very entertaining. I think it's the nature of the music, too - his choreography went well with that kind of Mexican salsa music.

Doesn't matter. He was still better than Patrick. That many errors in a program should result in a drop in the PCS. I'm glad to see that even Patrick admitted he was gifted.

I think that Ryan's skating is more suited to a show than a competition. I know that being the showman is just his style, but his PCS should be low. His skating skills are not anywhere near Chan of a lot of the men.

yep - sorry, reading too fast and watching videos at the same time. I really just meant to voice that I too was confused given the jump content of Bradley - maybe it is the 6.0 bias in me still, but just gut reaction (from reading, not viewing) was he would be higher....anyway, sorry for the dumb post.

oh please, no need to apologize, emma. I just wasn't sure we were talking about the same thing.
Bradley's jump content seems solid indeed. A 4T, 3 combos (with the 2 in the 2nd half of the program), 2 solid 3A's.

so, I'm a Chan Fan. period. His LP rocks - yes, IM(very)HO.

Love it. Need to see Bradley and Ponsero (and yes, Evan too). Sorry, in my hurry to get back to the Ladies, I didn't save the link to Chan's LP, but all I did was search Skate Canada 2008 on Youtube.

Thanks!
This is an exciting news... winning the LP without depending on quads and triple axels!
I love watching figure skaters for doing what they are good at. Every single turn of Sawyer's program intrigued me. There was a certain simplicity and intricacy during the kaleidoscopic portrayal of Mozart, that was almost penetrating. And, I think the penetration was even stronger than his performance in SA. I really hope more skaters go towards this direction. It will certainly attract audience like myself.

Holy Crap - did Sawyer NOT do a quad or a triple axel? Seriously - I just watched his program on YouTube and it was so exciting - so wonderful - that I had no idea he missed anything by the end. Here's hoping he can keep on like this because that was really fun to watch!

He's a damn good skater regardless of the scores. I hope this is more recognized in 4CC. I don't think he will make the GP Finals .We still have Joubert, Johnny, Daisuke, and Nobunari. I think Evan is a nail biter.

Check out the GoEs. Some fans say that they are judged by position in the air. Bradley is alway askew in the air. What I give him credit for, is that he's like a cat and unravels himself to land properly. That's more difficult than doing a text book lutz.

I like Shawn Sawyer as I like Jeromy Abbott. Smooth and original with a nice feel for the music. They are captivating skaters and draw one in.

I fell in love with Shawn's skate as I have been with Patrick's :love::love::love::love:. Fantastic!!!!!

Evan's program was also nice. Even though the costume is bizarre, I still like this program very much. If I watch it on YOUTUBE, the costume does not bother me too much unless they show it close-up. It just looks black at the distance.

Patrick Chan is absolutely wonderful, but his free skate was a mess. He botched so many jumps...

Hand down on triple axel...
Fall on triple axel (not even close to landing it)...
Totally missed lutz...
Step out on double axel...

I haven't watched everyone yet, but this was hardly a medal winning performance, nevermind a gold medal winning one. Chan is fabulous artistically, but this is still a competition, and he didn't get it done today. Once again, I am disappointed in the judging. As goofy or ridiculous as you might think Ryan Bradley's presentation is, the fact of the matter is that he went out there and nailed everything that he could, including a quad and two triple axels. And that should have been plenty to outscore someone with several major mistakes. Oh well.

Not necessarily, because it is not so much a question of what you do, but how you do it. Although Bradley jumped better, his skating quality cannot be compared with Chan, Lysacek, etc. and with plenty of other skaters that were not even in this event. Bradley is a good show skater, but to have a meaningful pro career he needs merits from the eligible skating to be invited to shows.

About Voronov I had the impression that his freeskate programme would have suited Urmanov and his majestic posture perfectly. Voronov though is not Urmanov and he needs a programme to suit his skating style and personality. The freeskate costume is perhaps not the best choice for his bodytype, in my opinion.

Aside from the higher GoE's that were mentioned, Sawyer got a couple extra points from having higher levels on most of the non-jump elements and he also maxed out his combination jumps. Bradley wasn't able to do a 3-3 combo or a 3-jump combination.

Interesting that Bradley brought his LP back from 2 years ago. He needs to bring it alive again, though, like he did at Nationals. His skating isn't very pleasing to watch when he's not being borderline campy and exuding energy.

Speaking of Sawyer again, he needs more speed. If he had that, and got the Triple Axel down, he'd be a top contender. I agree with whoever said he should replace that 3Lz in the SP with a 3Lo.

Patrick Chan made a bunch of mistakes in the LP, but he did have the best presentation. I do think he deserved to win considering the SP.

Evan Lysacek I actually would have placed over Bradley. He wasn't great or anything but I at least saw more expertise there and his 3Lo didn't deserved to be downgraded.

And poor Ponsero. So talented. Please get your jumps consistent. :frown:

It is a scandal that Chan with his boring performance had the highest PCS, especially for execution, choreography and interpretation. Sawyer, Ponsero and Bradley were all better in this. Especially for Ponsero were the results very frustrating.

It is a new sad example how the results can be manipulated.

He was hardly boring. His program was the most intricate and he skated with the most speed and flow.

Ryan Bradley had better choreography??? LOL.
