Men's LP

Bradley was being congradulated by his coaches. then he flexed his muscles, and said something about he's the man. the coach agreed. then he started playing with his hand and said a childish voice "mom I'm not gay" . The coaches were like shhh;what are you talking about. Then Ryan smiled and said his mom would be proud of him. I thought it was a risky joke on television. Considering the hoopla about sexuality in men's figure skating.

 OMG, he DID say that, as this video shows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot2sXY_Nwb8

I certainly have a different impression of him now. :scowl::disapp:

^ creepy.

Good skate from him - really high jumps some of them, and he is a crowd pleaser. And, I enjoy that too - but do favor the more intricate programs of some of the other men, even when they fall. Or maybe - I'm just glad we have this variety to watch and get different things from.

Why are Evan's and Shawn's PCS so low compared to Patrick?

Evan has the reputation as a top skater, got a very nice program from TT (forget about the costume), performed well, and skated decently well despite missed jumps.

Shawn was so exquisite and every single move of his went so extremely well with the music.

Patrick is certainly fantastic in this department and he also had a home crowd.

But still I thought that Evan and Shawn deserved PCSs a little bit closer to Patrick.

Patrick Chan was so gifted in this competition. I'm getting tired of this type of skaters coasting on PCS. His 3A technique is so flawed, and the LP is hardly interesting. I sure hope he'll suffer in the future. Another judges' pet IMHO.

Shawn was fantastic, easily my favorite men's program this season.

B/c their SS, TR, PE, CH, IN are nowhere near his? I mean, is there any other answer to that?

But on a bright note, Evan's lip has become a flip in just a week.

What really got me was the tone of your comment on Patrick's LP... because I saw a grown up program skated maturely.

Well, on CBC they just showed Shawn and Kurt talking us through Shawn's program. You will be happy to know that Shawn agrees with your assessment. :)

I would hope the skater would like their program. otherwise, why do it?

I haven't been excited by a men's program for a long time, but this one is truly amazing to me. I loved Lambiel's last program, but he never skated clean, not even close. I hate a flawed program no matter how beautiful the choreography and other aspects of skating are. A program with no minimum technical content such as 3A generally does not appeal to me either. However, I'll make an exception to Shawn's skating if he skates clean. He is Sasha Cohen's male version. In this particular performance, he executed all elements extremely well, I love the music piece, and I love love the incredible transition into many of his jumps. I guess that also partially makes up for the missing 3A! Wow, simply incredible to me. I'll try to find different versions to keep on file.:laugh:

Shawn Sexy Sawyer

That is a cute and accurate nickname for him! :agree: He is sooooo much more beautiful in person. I was in Ottawa to witness Shawn beat everyone in the free skate!  I predicted he would finish in the Top 5, and he did!

That's a good way to put it! I also could say Yukina Ota and Alissa Cizny.

He also has all the mature nuances that I love.

Not that simple. I recall Joubert received similar (or even better?) scores on PCS compared to Jeff at 2008 Worlds. I have no problem a skater like Chan receiving good PCS. But it's very intersting that Evan could not touch Chan despite his established reputation as a top skater. This is not what I have usually seen.

As for Sawyer, I wonder if he had much worse skating skills than Patrick Chan or was just disadvantaged here due to lower ranking. Although Patrick Chan might be better at skating skills (don't know how much by just seeing on TV) as well as transitions, I thought that Shawn's performance, interpretation, and choreography were just as good as Chan's in LP.

I don't know why Evan's PCS are so much lower than Patrick Chang's. Not like Evan's LP is empty, in fact, he has lots of in between moves and choreography. I am sorry but I don't get Patrick Chang, Yes he is a great skater but his skating doesn't interest me or lacks a wow factor.

Yes, something's happened to Evan in the week between Skate America and Skate Canada. In Skate America he had like the highest PCS of his entire career (internationally). In Skate Canada he did much worse.

But really, how else would a skater who's 2nd in the short program, and 3rd after the FS, finish 1st overall?

To this naked, unexpert eye Patrick looks like a far superior basic skater and Evan's lower PCS at SC seems like a belated recognition of reality. But it's ironic that it came when he skated well. I would be a lot more distressed if Evan outscored Patrick.

I agree with the previous poster. Having said that, Evan live was not as bad as he looks on Youtube. His seemingly flailing arms that can get tiring on youtube just fill the ice nicely in competitions. His spins had very good speed, especially considering his height and long limbs. As for his costume, there were worse varieties - cough Mroz cough. I think he did understand the music and he tried to be with the music throughout the program.

I was present at the Men's LP, and I have to say that Patrick's speed (he was so fast on the ice that even when he was just stroking around the rink, it was next-to-impossible to get a clear photo of him) and edges are definitely superior to Shawn's, and maybe the transitions as well. That being said, Shawn is at least equal (if not better) on the other presentation aspects. I firmly believe that Shawn's PCS shouldn't have been lower than 70 (and something like 71-72 is more reasonable). He was held back for being in the first group and for being a relative "nobody" on the world scene.

You are so lucky to have been there! Shawn's lp and Patrick's sp were definitely my highlights of the event. I totally agree with you. I hope this will be THE breakthrough year for Shawn.

Thanks for your report! I was able to watch better quality picture on TV, which strenghened my impression that Patrick is fantastic in skating skills and transition. I also felt that Shawn was a bit slow in his skating and his steps were relatively less impressive. But I totally agree that his performance/excution, interpretation, and choreos were just as good as Patrick's! I think that Shawn presents more graceful, softer lines and moves than Patrick, which went so well with the music. I agree that perhaps being in the first group and relatively less known hurt him. Besides, unless you get a better mark on your skating skills, you usually could not score higher in other PCS criteria. I do't think it right that they do not differentiate each of the PCS criteria too much, but that's how it has been. So if Shawn becomes faster, his PCS may go up.
Yet, I am very happy that he won the LP even without a 3A, even though there are many other skaters who landed a 3A and a quad. Shawn got so many plus GOEs that his TES was so much higher than his base value total.

- ...I loooooved Patrick's skate, even with all the mistakes. Seventeen years old - what a huge talent. There is such a purity and musicality about his skating. His footwork is exceptionally legible and beautiful (not just flashy). I liked the FP better than the SP - partly because of the romantic music and the elegant costume...

- I was actually pleasantly surprised by Evan's FP. I think he performed it better than at SA, or is it just me? Once he loses the costume I think it will be a good program for him. He needs something with loose sleeves to mask his long skinny arms but hopefully he will take his cue from Kozuka and tone it down - drastically...

I agree 100% both on Patrick and Evan!

I can't believe my first figure skating competition could be SUCH a wonderful experience! :) I knew that I was part of something very magical when Shawn blew the roof off with his gorgeous skating. I have a very good feeling that his talent is now blossoming and we'll soon see his true colours.

Patrick is phenomenally talented for his age (I admit that I sometimes forget he's 17! :p), but experience still plays a role in a skater's level of artistry. At this point in time, I'd have to say that Shawn is the more musical of the two (even though Patrick's basics are stronger) since he does pick up subtle nuances a little better. He has done a number of innovative and dynamic routines in the past, and they gave him the sophistication and maturity necessary to fully express the beauty of "Amadeus". If Patrick had skated to this program, you can imagine that although he would do a pretty good job, it wouldn't generate nearly as much magic. I don't think it's possible for me to describe how high Shawn made our hearts soar that evening in Ottawa!

I think we can agree that we all have issues with PCS. :sheesh:
