2026 Olympic Season | Music Suggestions

Really, anime and Asian dramas (most of which have theme songs for every major character), like game soundtracks, are a vastly untapped source of both music and attention from these big fandoms. [...] And may very well be less expensive than pop/rock (with the current mess on music rights and costs, something to think about).
Or, they may not. These sources of music are also copyright protected and it may be problematic to arrange especially for a foreign skater/team. Like you said, Yuzuru approached the game creators directly and we don't know how much he actually paid (or, do we? :scratch2:) or what the deal was.

That said, the fact that a deal is possible is good news, at least in theory. OGs is an event with a huge media coverage, so some might be interested to use it as a promotional platform. Then again, OGs have their own set of sponsors and there is a compatibility problem... It's complicated. But I like to think that we have a hope

And if we dream...
i have another suggestion, also another one of my etnarnal skating wishes, Pink Floyd - Confortably Numb and Wish you were here. do i even need to link those two monuments of modern music?
...wouldn't it be great if an official mashup was released for sale?
We often have specific remixes or even specially composed musical pieces in figure skating. Why not to make them available?
In Europe and America, figure skating is not that big a thing for this to work; but it might in Japan ;)

If ISU is officially trying to turn figure skating into a platform for high fashion (I guess that creating the Best Costume Award means exactly that), then why not work a little harder and turn it into a promotional platform for music?

Music on its part is often tied to films, shows, and games... Imagine if it turned everything around and entertainment industry executives queued at skaters' doors with musical pieces and sponsorship deals in their hands...
Too bad that figure skating needs to be a popular sport for this to happen :(

Back to music suggestions - pieces from Cirque du Soleil soundtracks that I believe have not been skated to yet:

Ovo - Orvalho - slowly building piece will provide a lot to interpret and an image of a dragonfly to play with:

Good build for acrobatic elements mixed with moments of music to interpret:
Kurios - Gravity Levitas
Kurios - Fearsome Flight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPtSaFq_xao

Luzia - Tlaloc (live) - atmospheric and glide friendly:
an energetic disco remix is also available although I'm less charmed by it :

La Nouba - La Nouba theme - an incredibly cirquish melody that instantly creates the vibe of a circus:

That's just to name a few

All new music to me. I really like that Fearsome Flight one and sent the clip to my pairs partner as a suggestion. As we age, we feel as if we're racing against time and look for music that pushes us beyond the slow-and-cautious look of too many older adult pairs!

Even if we consider that "fans only" format is a synonym to "literally viral" (which I doubt but it's just me), there are two things:
1) these are show programs, which is a format very different from a competitive program;
2) Yuzuru will not compete in 2026 OGs.
So why should any skater care? And why to yuzuspam this topic anyway?
Pretty much every piece of the currently all too familiar music used in comp is used in shows and vice versa. I was at least trying to promote the idea of new and wildly popular soundtracks and/or game music (which I have done before) because I honestly believe there is a crossover market, and he happens to be the one most successfully exploiting it.

Don't skaters want to appeal to a mass audience? Yes, I love the classics as much as anyone but their fans are unlikely to notice and start watching (and let us be honest, there are less of them to crossover).

Back to other music then... I expect a LOT of repeat choices next year because polishing an known skate even further seems to be a popular move in the Olympic year (oh god, more Dune... how did it become so warhorsey so fast?) and I also expect to see the same 'trendy' pieces being picked by all too many people who fondly imagine they will be the only ones. However, if any of the women would discover and use our glorious Elena Kats-Chernin (Isabeau, for one! though Hana Bath is more likely) I would be a happy camper, and her stage and ballet music would translate a treat.

Oh and just as important as which piece of music the skaters choose.... can they please, pretty please, pretty please with sugar and cream and sprinkles on top, at least try and learn to do a decent music cut. Way too many the last few years have been downright criminal if not insulting to the musicians and the audience's eardrums, it appears to be a dying art (and Eteri's team - what was that tone-deaf choreographer's name again? were in the vanguard of killing it, but they haven't been around so everyone else has to take them blame right now).

Oh, I think there was a misunderstanding, let me explain.
Bow and Arrow has been choreographed as a proper SP made specifically to meet all the current SP requirements. It is not a show piece as such. It is competition ready, you might say, and it has all an SP needs to have - the proper length, a strong layout of 4LZ, 3A, and 4S3T, all the spins, steps etc. just according to the rules. So it is intentionally made to be not different from a competitive format at all. As Yuzuru is not competing, in theory, another skater could take not just the music but a ready-made program along with it (getting permission from Yuzu and acknowledging him as a choreographer then, of course). Or come up with a completely different program to this hit anime song - which is probably more likely. Whichever way, of course, they care for comparisons.
Actually IMHO it is an obvious piece of music to be discussed as a potential choice for the Olympic season's SP, especially for younger skaters who could easily identify with the anime's main character. Yuzuspam? Come'on, Bow and Arrow, or some other song from The Medalist, is probably the most likely to be actually competed on the ice one day of all brought up on this thread. Why? Because this anime is actually being currently watched and loved by skaters themselves, by skating kids, their parents, coaches etc., especially in Japan of course, but it is on the global D+ so...
The fact that its opening song has just been choreo'ed and skated by a double OGM in a hit video, showcasing that it may be done as an SP, just makes it all the more interesting (of course, IMHO, yours might be different).
And BTW I am not really sure what you mean by "fans only format" - both Bow and Arrow videos with Yuzu skating have been posted on the official YT channel (and other social media) of Kenshi Yonezu, the Japanese star singer and composer of the piece, as is usually done with music videos. Short bits of Kenshi singing and Yuzu skating to the song have just been shown during the Medalist anime's Episode 11 in Japan, right in between the opening animation and the proper episode. With D+ blessing, I guess, as this could not have been done without them. And, oh, for all I know, for YouTube videos, 10 million views in 10 days and 2 million views in 3 days is considered absolutely viral. Bow and Arrow is the fastest growing music video on Japanese YouTube since 2022 and just joined the YouTube Global 100 Most Watched :)
Anyway, off to other ideas for music and let's not hijack the thread with this discussion :)

I would suggest skating to That's Amore, The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, or soundtracks such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I also like The Theory of Everything and Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

* Imagined Oceans by Karl Jenkins would make such a lively short program. Laura Lepisto used this music for 2010 Olympics. And it's not a warhorse.
BTW, remember when it seemed like everybody was skating to Seven Nation Army by haley reinhart? Then that trend stopped as quickly as it came!

Anything New Age (it has it’s place) by Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider.. some suitable for skating, some not

A list of his albums…

Few favorites ..

Belladonna

Sisterseed & The Magic White Garden (meant to be together)..

Jugglers in Obsidian

I adore Karl Jenkins music (Kevin Reynolds did The Armed Man and even when it wasn't perfect, I loved it anyway) so I am all for this!

Does anyone watch the TV show Severance? I think it could make for a really interesting FD, as each ice dancers could play two different characters, an innie and an outie. It may be too niche... but for someone like Maddie and Evan or Olivia and Tim, I think it could really stand out.

Ilia Malinin used Severance for his FS at Worlds 2024..

Someone mentioned Italian music... well... that is scary in some ways :)
Do we really need Bocelli and Einaudi to spam us for the entire season ? There are also some operas which shouldn't be used by young skaters... just saying.

But here are a few examples...

Pines of Rome by Respighi (there are a lot of good parts... this is just one excerpt)

Wasserklavier by Berio

Chi Mai by Ennio Morricone (I mean lot of his music has been used for figure skating and rightfully so but perhaps not this simple and nice tune on the piano)

I linked this as I cannot embed it (limit of two) which means I won't look for more for now... you got the point though... there are options outside of Experience and Io ci sarò (sorry Frangi)

Another mighty favourite would be some pieces of music from the soundtrack of Robin of Sherwood. There is quite some choice, as it takes more than a half hour in total. Most of the Robin Hood programmes are from 'the prince of thieves' but personally I am more into the 80s serial (1984-1986 to be precise) and the wonderful music from Clannad.

Or the recently launched missing numbers form season 3 of Robin of Sherwood (with Jason Connery as Robin) with some lovely additional nummers by Clannad. Press on the right for the various numbers.

I'm not sure if this TV show is still relevant today (imao the soundtrack was better than the show, which was pretty budget). However, it could be a fine option for an English/Irish themed program with a plot.

To continue the Irish music theme, I'd like to suggest a younger generation Irish artist and a bit newer TV show,
LYRA - Emerald - Teen Wolf Soundtrack:

The pop music content of Lyra (singer) is also worth looking at as her style combines the heritage of the golden age Irish pop music with current pop, rock, and R&B vibe. It goes well with choreographed dancing, as can be seen in the following clip (and this choreography has some moves typical for figure skating )
LYRA - YOU (Dancing With The Stars Performance):

I'd love for someone to use the corpse bride music that evgenia medvedeva used in 2015. I heard that an ice dance team has used the music before, too. Idk if the music is from the original stop-motion Corpse Bride or from elsewhere.
