2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I came here to ask about something else and was quite saddened to learn of Nadiia’s and Peter’s split. I always thought it a great shame that they didn’t get on the GP (except that one host spot?). Hopefully it will work out for the best.

Anyway, my question is: who is the team with the Irish FD in 2023-2024? For a while, I thought they were Alicia and Paul but now I realize they are not. Hopefully it is not too lazy to ask for the answer instead of doing my own research 😀. I am collecting my favorite Irish themed programs into a playlist for St. Patrick’s Day and am in a bit of a hurry.

Sorry for the off-topic but i couldn't help myself... I have watched this event all night.. and wow..
Go Canada

Short track world championships.
Canadian men swept the gold medals... (4 golds out of 4 events + 1 silver)
Canadian women won three silver individual + the relay.
Canada won the mixed relay, so Canada swept the relays.

10 medals total for Canada (6 golds, 4 silvers)

@Ichatdelune
choi minjeong won another title... she's amazing. Apparently, the men team has suffered a bit but is getting back on track as their bronze in the relay is showing... My fave (as we mentioned) isn't on the national team anymore and another Korean man, Kim Min-seok, is now representing Hungary after a suspension (DUI) from the Fed - i know he started as a long track skater... but now he was there doing short track.... Park Jiwon wasn't competing this season until Asian games I think : i guess he is returning from injury ? He didn't win individual medals but he was clearly a factor.

In any case, this will be my first and last post about short track skating this season :) sorry again for the off-topic

I have a dream tonight that Sara-Maude Dupuis replace Maddie Schizas at Worlds and that Sara-Maude will skate the skate of her life and place top 10 at Worlds. Not sure I have a premonitory dream. We will see if this happen ...

It is going to be extremely hard for Maddie to place in the top ten at Worlds.

Last season, you needed 185-190. This season, I have a feeling it will go up to 190-195. The standard has gone up. I see all three Japanese, at least two American, one Korean, and at least two European ladies exceeding 195, at Worlds. So, that is eight ladies. Maddie’s SB is a bit over 190. She will have to skate like how she did at Skate Canada, to have a chance. So, I think going by SB, she has a small chance.

However, what shows me that she is not ready, is her 4CC performance. Maddie only got one spin in both SP at level 4. The rest, were level 3 and (even level 2 spins😳). Also, her step sequence is only level 2 in both SP and LP. She loses too many points throughout her programs… also, she didn’t score that high in PCS with her new program. It wasn’t well received by the judges. When comparing her to a skater within her scoring range, those levels matter, and I feel like she will just miss out in 13th-18th range.

Contrast that to SMD. I believe SMD received all level 4 spins and level 3 in her step sequence. SMD to me, has shown she is the better skater due to keeping up those levels in spins and step sequence. She loses to Maddie in PCS, because she doesn’t get the reputation scores, like how Maddie does. If she did, she would be scoring 180+ at 4CC.

However, with that being said, Maddie earned her spot to Worlds due to her two GP events (both over 180) and Canadian National Champion (where she did wow me with her SP). Maddie will skate in the penultimate group and her lion 🦁 king is not bad and could put her in contention. My hope is that she skates well enough in the SP to stay in this second last group and then to just hang on to top ten.

However, if you look at the judges protocol from 4CC, she just loses too many points from spins and lack of complicated step sequences to contend against the best top ten ladies in the world.

the levels are Maddie's issue (and consistency)
for SMD the issue is that she does 3t-3t and not 3f or 3lz-3t.... (and the lack of reputation)

For the men, Romsky could do it, with work on the 3A’s and cardio improvement and mental training.

Triple Axel
He fell on this 3A jump at both Nationals and 4CC in the SP. But, landed both those 3A jumps in the LP’s. Which shows, he can land this jump. So, I hope he works on this jump in the next few days leading to Worlds. Also, his 3Lz could use some work.

To me, with his 4S, 3A and 3Lz 3T, Romsky is a top ten athlete in the SP (proved this last season with a 9th place finish after a clean SP) and in the LP (first half) due to both technical ability and skating skills.

Improve his Cardio
Where, he loses it is in the second half of the LP with a backloaded 4S that he either falls or pops on. The jumps in the second half also always look laboured. Also, in his latest video, he admits, the reason he fell on his spin at a competition, was due to lack of cardio. It is like he gets shocked 😮 as to what he needs to work on, during competitions. That is a bad sign to me.

Also, as we all know, the last thing holding Roman back, is his mental strength. He seems to do better, as Canada #2 guy, when he has Keegan or another Canadian male to skater, to take the pressure off. I’m nervous knowing he knows Olympic spots are on the line. My prayer is for him to just skate a good enough SP to place top 24.

As for Dance, I’m confident we will keep all three spots, as long as our top two dance teams are healthy. Piper and Paul are fighting for spots 1-2. LaLa is fighting for 4th with GB, FRA and FIN teams. It would be a dream of mine, for LaLa to place 4th heading to the Olympics. Worst case scenario is they place 2nd and 7th, which is still good enough for three spots. Hoping for best case scenario of 1st and 4th 🤗

In Pairs, we are also looking good. I think the GER and JPN pairs teams will be on the podium. They both looked so hungry at Europeans and 4CC. I think our Canadian pairs team will be fighting for a podium spot with ITA, GEO and the duo USA teams (home advantage) Also, team Hungary is always dangerous. The Italian team will be their biggest competition for this podium spot. Worst case scenario is if they place 7th and 8th and just miss the three spots.

However, after 4CC, I was super impressed with both our top pairs teams. Deanna and Max looked their best with their LP at 4CC and they could place as high as 2nd, in my opinion. I just think one of GER and JPN pairs teams will nail it and are too strong, this season. Deanna’s/Max’s 3T 1A 2A and 3S isn’t as strong or consistent to hold up against these pairs teams. As well as her spiral. She seems to be struggling with this element. Also, the throw jumps are too simple to win a Worlds title this year. If they go cleanish, i do see them placing anywhere from 2nd to 4th though. I hope they podium.

My favourite Canadian entry though, is Lia and Trentt. I have watched their Nationals and 4CC skates so many times. I love their programs and I now like them more than Deanna and Max. Scott Moir’s choreo is brilliant with the scent of a woman. If Lia didn’t miss her opening 3T, they could have not only scored over 200, but, over 205. I’m hoping they surprise at Worlds. My dream would be for them to land on the Worlds podium (even over Deanna and Max). Realistically, I hope we get one medal at this event and two top five placements at Worlds, so we can send a much deserved third team to the Olympics.

I don't know man.... I have almost more confidence in Maddie bringing a top 10-12 than Roman at this point... He has another issue : he URs... He also pops... Maddie does have some consistency issues, but she is more stable than Roman in my opinion

Dance :
Worst case scenario would be something like 5 and 7... So I think the 3 spots are safe. I don't think that's what's going to happen :) I think it's going to be 2 and 4 or 5.

Pairs... this is a trickier field. I think worst case is about 5 and 8... three spots should be safe. I think it's going to be more like 3 and 6

Yes. I agree. I predict Romsky to finish 19th-24th at Worlds. Maddie has a way better chance at top ten than Roman.

also, she didn’t score that high in PCS with her new program. It wasn’t well received by the judges.
With Maddie's new program at 4CC, it's hard to judge if it wasn't well received by the judges. She was dealing with the stomach bug that was going around there at the time. Her Presentation mark was lower there than Composition or Skating Skills, I can see it being hard to have good presentation with being sick.

I wonder if there will be any livestream of Worlds?
We'll probably have two streaming choices: CBC or ISU Youtube channel. For 4CC, both were available and had the same content. YouTube is rewindable during the live broadcast (in case some inconsiderate person comes to the door) but the CBC stream is not.

I believe CBC is also doing a couple of shows on broadcast TV. Those will be edited down to selected skaters. They may have Kurt/Carol/Brenda as commentators.

If you Google CBC figure skating schedule, you can see all the event times. They are conveniently adjusted to your time zone! Once a stream is live, you can easily get to the stream from the schedule page by just clicking.

Thanks for those reminders. It was late last night when I found the schedule but there was no mention of streaming.

I was in a bit of a panic, thinking it was starting tomorrow. Just realized that I was a week ahead of myself. Lol. In any case, I don’t see it set up on cbc (English) yet. I will check back next week! Thanks for the info.
