I hesitated to add "plyer" to the number because it's an old-fashioned occupational word, the plyer of a trade, or an innkeeper was a plyer of food and drink. I don't think it's ever an alternate spelling for the kind of pliers one uses as a tool.

(Once a linguistics student, always a....:))

shore, horse, and I looked in a dictionary to see if heros might be an American spelling of heroes. It isn't, but I see it's the name of a genus of fish, so #3-heros.

(That's what I wondered about hero in the plural, so I checked a couple of dictionaries and none of them gave heros as an American plural spelling. I thought I'd seen it in newspapers; maybe I should have looked at more than two dictionaries.)
