2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Skate Canada's top Men's moments:

My top moment isn't on the list, I really enjoyed going to the Junior Men short at Challenge. Several of them had their best short programs of the season there. I'm looking forward to watching them next season, whether they're moving up to Senior domestically or staying Junior.
I have two
John Kim's Sp at Nationals
The return of Eddy

It also says that they'll start monitoring new Ice Dance and Pairs teams in April for inclusion in NextGen. I think it'll come after the competition again.
Sigh…. I guess I have to be patient.
They could update and then just add the ice dance and Pairs teams after the monitoring session.

My favourite moment is also not on the list. David Howes SP at Nationals should be in the list…..

Sara-Maude is back to working on her 3A 👀

I’m actually amazed by our Canadian Ladies as of late.

First, Lia practicing 3A at Canadian Nationals during practice.
Then, Maddie going for it 5 times during that stars on ice show
Now, SMD landing this 3A during practice 👏 👏

Well done ladies!! Work hard during this time period to shock the world next season!!

A triple axel for Sara-Maude Dupuis in the SP and FS could just raise her GOE and PCS.
Just look at Amber Glenn season ...

Hmmm... I think the idea that Sarah is a power skater is more myth than reality. Sometimes we label skaters who aren’t dainty or graceful as “power skaters,” but in her case, I don’t think it fits. She’s not especially fast, her jumps are small, and her patterns don’t cover much ice. That's why her PCS are low. She doesn't have the extension or posture of one of the more graceful skaters, but she also doesn't really have the speed or ice coverage of a power skater. I actually think her skating skills are decent, and I don't think her long program shows off the fact that she has pretty decent edges. But I think for her, more than most skaters, her PCS will be dependent on the program - I think that will be key for her next year. Really buy into a dramatic type of program and just go for it.

In terms of the quality of her jumps, her triple-triple at WTT, for example, had very little height or distance. Same with her loop and flip in the free skate—small, tight, and not much speed going in. That said, I really admire her for going for the triple Axel - I've wanted a Canadian woman to go for it for decades now since Lisa sergeant gave it a shot in the early 90s, and Josee Chouinard toyed with it as a professional in the late 90s. It shows Sarah's guts, self-awareness, and real determination to make the Olympic team.

On that note, does anyone know if there's a video out there anywhere of either Elizabeth Manley or Jose going for the Triple Axel? I've heard that they both could land them, and I am not surprised because they both had amazing double axels. But I'm not aware of a video...

I have never seen videos of Manley nor Chouinard landing 3a but I did hear that Chouinard could do it. I also heard Joannie was trying quad toes but that may have been a myth ;)

Let's not forget Alaine who was actually trying the 3a for the bigger part of a season. She never landed it but it was done in competition... not just from the training rink.

Regarding Sara-Maude, she's not the fastest and I do agree her jumps are not the biggest but she has good edges and skating skills. Her positions are maybe not the most extended but they are precise. Her spins are usually very tight and well centered.
I am fine with lower GOE on jumps but I think she does deserve higher PCS. Her double axel is very nice. I think she will try the triple in competition this year. Why not ? She has nothing to lose.

Interesting that the fact that Maddie wasn't able to gain the 2 spots for the Olympic, that's mean that women will need to work harder and maybe bring the triple axel for gaining the only spot for the Olympic. I have a feeling that the competition will be fierce this year in women.

I can hardly wait to see if John Kim - with what appear to be good QTs and QSs and TAs - can control his nerves and deliver two good programmes. Although it took a lot of guts to try 2 quads in the Senior short at Cdns! To me, he is one of the most underrated young male skaters in Canada. I know he has also been plagued by injuries in the past. Fingers are tightly crossed for a healthy break-out season.

Agree with this entire paragraph, particularly the last sentence.

I didn't get to see her much in competition, but my recollection is that she has nice spins.

If things stay as they are, she'll be the number two woman in Canada during an Olympics where that only gets you an alternate assignment. It's up to her to change that, and I'm heartened that she's taking that approach.

One thing SMD and our other Lady contenders should keep in mind is that even though they probably won't make the Olympics, is that 4CC next year will be a great opportunity to make a name for them self. The top skaters will not be there and that could leave the door open for a CAN lady to do well. Yes there will be some 'top' USA and JPN ladies there but if they could beat one or two of them and place top 5 or even sneak into a medal the judges will start taking them more seriously.

4CC will be a great opportunity this season for all the disciplines. There likely won't be any skate offs for Worlds and more skaters getting the chance to go. It's a good way to establish themselves for the next quad.

I'm hoping that the other disciplines can increase the selection pool for it the way the women were able to this season.
