It's this time of the year... where the summer series start. I believe there's already been a small event in Alberta and this weekend it is the Super Series Victoria Day in BC. So here is our new thread :) 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

This is a special. An Olympic year.

Canada has qualified
3 spots in dance
2 spots in pairs
1 spot in men
1 spot in women

The most optimistic scenario could give Canada 3 medals at the games. Dance with Piper and Paul, Pairs with Deanna and Max and the team event.

However, the most pessimistic scenario could mean Canada comes back without any medals at the games.

What are your predictions ?

Looking at some of the lists from Patinage Québec, we have 3 new pairs teams...
Quatrocci and Lacasse teamed up following the retirement of their respective partners. I hope they do well in juniors and adapt fast.
Beau Callaghan is coming back to pairs alongside Vladimir Furman, a tall and strong skater from Québec who seems to be a good prospect for pairs.
Surprise surprise, Thierry Ferland is back on the ice with partner Eliana Secunda, a former USA single skater who had switched to pairs. I don't know much about her. It's surprising to me that Thierry isn't able to find a partner in Québec considering the many competent skaters available (in singles) who are not "that tall" but of course, pairs is a different animal and one needs to want to be lifted, twisted and thrown. I hope this is the good partner for him.
They will certainly represent Canada because otherwise, they wouldn't be on the Team Québec listing (and funded by Patinage Québec)

Any other new partnerships you are interested about ? What do you think of these three partnerships ?

Talking of pairs, I think our 3 teams will bounce back this year. Are you confident that Lia and Trennt and Deanna and Max can come back strongly at the games ?

I am assuming at this point both teams would participate at worlds too.. which is not necessarily a guarantee after the games... If so, do you think Canada will earn their 3 spots back ? With the up and coming teams, and our juniors, it seems imperative for Canadian pairs skaters to grab some spots :)

In dance, I believe strongly that Piper and Paul will be great. I am sure that the Lanes have kept a good free dance for them this Olympic year. They have learned their lesson by now, not just them but all coaches/choreos, that a good program can earn you a good score... as most teams anyways do the same elements, it often comes to that.. (look at the Dune free dance at worlds).

LaLa are in a same position. They need and deserve much better programs.

Will it be Fabbri and Ayer or Lauriault Le Gac for the third spot ?

I think Fabbri and Ayer are on an upward trajectory while Lauriault Le Gac have reached pretty much their optimal level... The latter do not have the best skating skills and speed but they are acrobatic and fun to watch... I love seeing them compete but I prefer Fabbri Ayer's speed and power.

For men, at this point we need to see who will be healthy or not. That's all I can say.

I am more excited by what is happening with our junior skaters. Eddy for instance will hopefully have a better season now that he has done a full season back from injury.

Women : it's really Maddie's ticket to the games to lose. She's been dominant for many years on the Canadian scene but it may not be enough... Others are growing stronger and stronger and could challenge her. However, at this point, if Skate Canada consider experience, the team event, and how internationl judges see our skaters, it would take a real meltdown at Nationals for Maddie not to get that ticket.

I am excited to see how Sara-Maude brings up her tech (triple axel in the works and landed in practice)

I think Kaiya and Uliana as well as Fée Ann and Breken could challenge for a 4CC spot... if not for the top of the podium at Nationals. Olympic season can make it or break it for any skater who is just looking at the champion and wanting that spot :)

Lia Cho will continue to be on my radar ! Cannot wait to see her compete. It was such a highlight of my nationals to see her long program live.

What are your thoughts ????

I'm interested in seeing how Senior Men plays out this season. There should be more Juniors moving up domestically:

- David Shteyngart, Jake Ellis and Etienne Lacasse age out (Etienne isn't on the list for Quebec's development teams, so he may be concentrating on Pairs for now)
- David Howes, David Bondar and Kole Sauve don't age out, but are moving up domestically to Seniors. I think Edward Vasii will move up as well.

PLu's there should be more of the NextGen men going for quads this season. Grayson Long posted his 4S training, Edward Vasii hinted that they were coming and David Bondar is training a 4T and 4S. Bondar did attempt a 4S in competition, but he had boot problems from Challenge to Junior Worlds so that was the only attempt at adding it.

For Pairs, Ashlyn Schmitz/Raine Eberl had some training recently with Andrew Evans. Also Bombardier/Minar should get a GP assignment this season and be part of the National Team.

I'm looking forward to Women this season. It should be interesting with the movement from last Nationals.

I have complete confidence in pairs team. Lia/Trennt had a very strong nationals and 4CC and they are so talented. Deanna and Max will have better programs and shes such a fighter, Kelly/Loucas were so impressive to me by the end of the season (I loved seeing them at Worlds), also Fiona/Ben I'm expecting a breakout season.

For women, I'm so excited. Maddie had an amazing end of season with her best placement at Worlds ever, and I just can't imagine her losing the Olympics spot (but you never know in this sport.) Excited for Sara-Maude, Katherine, Kaiya, etc. Just a talented group of girls plus all the juniors. I'm also planning on going to Nationals in 2026, so seeing Lia Cho and her programs in person will be exciting.

I really need LaLa to get really good programs this year. I don't think they fit soft programs very well, would love something more fiery for them. Piper and Paul I NEED them to lock it in and be olympic champions, please please give them amazing programs. Third spot will be fun to see the competition for it.

I don't follow Men's enough to know a ton, but I've always enjoyed Roman and I'm assuming he's the favorite for the Olympics but I'll just follow what people say here for that or if there's an upcoming senior who could take it.

I know for some reason the Canadian thread has the most negative people and everyone loves to doom post here, but I really do feel like good things are coming for this season.

I was waiting for @4everchan to start this chat thread!!! 😍 👏

Now that the season has started I can start talking about my ice princess Lia Cho.

Lia Cho - New Programs

Lia Cho started learning new programs in March. Her choreographer is non other than the one and only World Champion- Jeff Buttle (one of my fave male skaters of all time).

Look at her smile. That is the smile of someone who knows she is going to slay this upcoming season.

Robert Brodie interviews Wesley Chiu:
“I’ve been working on new programs, and we have considered keeping old programs, but now I have two (new) programs that are ready to go for next season.,” he said. “I don’t want to specify on whether I’m keeping (last year’s programs) or getting new ones. Want to keep that a surprise.”

Hopefully next season goes better for him❤️

Gabrielle Daleman is back to jumping on the ice. Hopefully she can make it to Nationals this season 🤞

Let's hope so!

I just saw that Sara-Maude Dupuis had won the Trophée Josée Chouinard.

Le prix Josée Chouinard qui est remis à un (ou une) athlète qui s’est illustré sur la scène provinciale, nationale ou internationale et qui est un bon ambassadeur pour le patinage artistique.

Congratulations to Sara-Maude !

Molly Lanaghan posted a story of skating with Peter Beaumont at Scarboro FSC:

It could be for fun, she had posted a reel of skating with Billy Wilson French at Sheffield in March:

It could be however I thought that it may be a possibility for that pairing to emerge from Scarborough...

It makes sense for them coming out of Scarborough. I'm just not sure if Molly isn't visiting since she's been in England up until recently. She did help with a synchro seminar in Newfoundland this month

Billy and Molly seem to have excellent alignment* when skating together (*is that the right word - when legs are perfectly synchronised and extended??)

I'd love him to find a successful partnership - he's incredibly talented - offered a place at Juilliard, IIRC. If he and Molly are a good fit, then they could skate for Canada or GB - (selfishly, it would be great if it was GB to keep the current Ice Dance momentum going).

I think British dance is safe with Phebe and James... :) I think Canada may release Molly... and return back Billy... but I doubt they would let Peter go back.

Phebe and James are excellent - but it would be great to have a third ice dance team coming up, especially from a non-IAM coaching team.

(I spotted Billy at IceSheffield back in March and heard he'd had a skate with Molly and someone else, too.)

Wonder whether we'll get an announcement about Molly and Peter soon???

New interview with Deanna 😊
Wish I could have read it, but it wanted cookies, which I don't do. I did, though, get a kick out of the obscuring banner: Questo sito utilizza i cookies per migliarare la tua esperienza! OK, I read Italian, although I don't speak or write it well without a grammar textbook beside me. But I was tickled by the evidence that "cookies" is an international term that isn't translated from the English. Italians obviously see it as a masculine plural noun, hence the added article "i".
